It is traditional that our First Ladies wear American designers to many (most?) state dinners. Michelle favors a great many American designers, and often has a clever nod to her guests (like picking an American designer of Indian decent for an event hosting guests from India, etc. I have no comment on de la Renta's comment other than I did find her choice of designer odd, because other than the color (red) I could find no Chinese or American connection. Red is generally considered an auspicious color in china, and represents things like prosperity and good luck. This predates the red color of the chinese flag (which I think represents the communist party) by a long, long time and I think most people still associate the color red with good luck rather than the communists.
