Andi, I had been going to the Power Yoga class and my hip hurt a bit and then I read the article! Naturally I freaked out. Now, I would be more careful about what yoga class I went to. Live and learn.

Eek, that NYT article… I do a lot of yoga, and have for years. I will pay attention to the forward bends mentioned. If it’s not feet it’s hips. Aging, happy to get to do it but just when you think you’re taking good care of yourself… another study, haha. Also will begin to always rather than just sometimes wear my Taos support slippers around the house. Glad I followed this thread today!

I wanted a magic solution as well. I never could find metatarsal pads that worked for me and I wasn’t living in an area where I could get custom orthotics. It was very frustrating. I ended up getting super feet and putting them in new balance sneakers that had a huge foam sole and minimal drop. It was a lot of trial and error. While writing this I am remembering how much my feet hurt then and how much better they are now so there is hope. Good luck.

Kinnick, I doubt I’ll need to go back to the podiatrist any time soon. He said I needed to order metatarsal pads from Amazon. I did that, plus I bought a few things from CVS. I’ve been wearing the sock and my foot feels fine. I wanted a magic solution. But it will take experimentation, figuring out what works and what doesn’t, and which shoes have to go. :(

Dee, thank you for suggesting them. Yes, fingers crossed they work!

Staysfit, thank you for the suggestion. I’ll keep Altas (and Hokas, too) in mind. With Christmas, house guests, travel, more guests, I haven’t had time to systematically go through my shoes. I’ve been wearing my clogs with the sock, and little else. I need to give my hiking shoes a hard look, though, because we’re going on a birding trip in a few weeks.

I can second the suggestion for Altra sneakers. They make two styles with which I am familiar, one has rocker action and the other doesn’t. Rocker action apparently helps when you push off your metatarsals and it seems it would remove some pressure on the metatarsals since they wouldn’t need to push down as hard when you “toe off” while walking. Most running style sneakers have rocker action. I look for shoes that have zero to low drop and no rocker action, but it sounds like rocker action might be useful given your concern. It may be a good question for your podiatrist.

bj1111, sadly, I don’t have any joggers or athletic tube socks. Not yet, anyway. :)

Rock, thank you. I was hoping the podiatrist would just give me some kind of orthotic, but instead he said look on Amazon. A friend absolutely swears by Hokas. Last I heard, she had about ten pairs. I’ve been wearing the metatarsal socks everyday and my feet feel fine, and they work with my clogs. But then I’ll have to figure out what works for warm weather. I have several pairs of Bernardo sandals that couldn’t be any flatter or harder. :(

I’m so sorry about your foot woes, jaileen. It seems like foot issues come with the territory of aging, but it is no fun.

Recently, my podiatrist made me orthotics, and I wear them with Hoka Bondi 8’s as much as I can. Doing this has helped my feet better tolerate the periods when I wear my other shoes, such as when I go in to the office. Socks with looped terry cloth on the soles have also helped with cushioning my bony feet.

It seems like I have wasted a lot of money buying shoes that felt comfortable at first, only to find them intolerable after I can no longer return them.

I hope you can find some relief.

Kinnick, thank you. You’re right that my feet will never have padding again, but I don’t think exercise will hurt, and I did enjoy yoga.

I agree with Judy, I bought 2 pairs of Cushionaire rubber slip-ons for around the house, and they have been a godsend for my feet. I too, have had metatarsal issues and agree that cushion footwear is key and I've also added half insoles that have the metatarsal padding to some of my footwear. It seems to be working out quite well. I bought my Cushionaires at Marshall's, but I have seen them available on Amazon as well.

Yes,I can relate! Had to give up my beloved clogs and Blundstones about four years ago as they were just too hard on my feet ( had Morton’s neuroma) . Women tend to have bonier feet than men, who often have a nice layer of cushioning. Like others have said, never go barefoot, and wear cushioned (but not too flexible) zero drop shoes. Hokas were not flat enough for me, but Altras are (they run small!) and with a metatarsal pad stuck on the bottom of the innersole, it lifts the area nicely. I bought a pair of those flat, thick soled rubber slides from Cushionaire a year ago at tj max and they’ve been the best alternative to going barefoot in the house for me. Upside is I spend almost nothing on shoes any more! Miss the boot look tho.

You can wear shoes to do yoga. I can’t imagine there is any exercise you can do that will replace the lost cushioning. Stretching your calves may help with planter fasciitis but that is not what you have. Please cushion your feet even inside the house and don’t go barefoot. This problem can get really painful.

Suz, I’ll be needing a better house shoe, too. I probably shouldn’t go barefoot anymore. :(

Lisa, that’s great that yoga helped your feet. It helped my balance tremendously. We’ll see if it helps my feet, though. The podiatrist said the padding (fat) was gone from the bottom, and it wasn’t coming back. But I’m willing to give yoga another try anyway.

As others have said, I found a lot of relief from yoga and the foot strengthening that comes with it. Being barefoot for that time each day helps. Also, when its really bad, massaging my foot almost always brings relief. My theory is that the muscles around the metatarsal(s) relax and allow the bone(s) to re-align.

I recently saw Podiatrist and who gave some some orthotics to help with bunions- who knew that arch support ( very mild, as o/ w feels like a rock in my shoe) helps because takes pressure off of crooked toes.

Anyhoo, it’s fairly thin but does take up space in my shoes ( it’s designed as not quite full
Length, so that helps toe room) , and before this I was wearing thicker, more cushioned socks, especially in cool weather. So now the cushioned socks won’t work, but I think the orthotic is superior to those socks as remedy.

I still need “ cushy” socks and best ones are types of thicker bamboo knit- my best ones have been one- offs at discount store and I could not find what I THINK they are, online.

Suz, that’s very interesting. It’s also the foot whose pinkie toe I’ve broken twice, about 30 years apart. :(

Angie, about ten years ago we joined a gym and in addition to swimming, I went to a yoga class regularly. It was called Power Yoga. It was really meant for triathletes, etc., judging from the others in the class. I happened on it because it was convenient. (I really should have noticed that I wasn’t like the others!). Then I developed a pain in my hip and coincidentally read an article about women developing hip injuries, caused by yoga! I would like to go back, but to one geared to my age, not young super athletes. The aquatic center has classes, but I haven’t looked into them yet. I usually rush in and rush out. I’ll check it out after the holidays.

Brooklyn, I had to stop wearing my FitFlop slippers. They had great support but hurt my feet. Now I’m wearing Haflinger slippers that have zero support. They are warm and that’s it. I guess I’ll need warm weather slippers. It’s the dead of winter right now so I have a little time to figure it out.

Thanks Angie and Suz. I wanted something easy to slip on and off in summer. Last summer I bought some Dansko thongs (flip flops) but I think the arch support is a bit too aggressive for me. I feel like I’m walking on stones and I’m not getting used to it. I think I just need some general cushioning and mild arch support. It’s probably more important to have cushioning in the heel area. I’ve had some success this year with Taos sandals so I’ve ordered a pair of their thongs to wear at home. I’ll see how that goes.

Good luck with your search for comfy footwear JAileen.

JAileen, depending on the type of yoga you do, regularly and frequently - it's kind of life changing. HIGHLY recommend it. The yoga I do is weight bearing and active. That seems to work best for my body.

Brooklyn, I only wear my ECCO sneakers indoors when my feet are feeling bad (thanks, Suz!) Otherwise I wear Dansko slippers. VERY supportive and cushioning. These suit me most of the year. We have a/c at home now so the temperature is controlled.

I am also looking at these in cream, upon the recommendation of a client who has similar foot issues. The Olukai brand is suppose to be a goodie:

JAileen, your comment about its being the same foot (possibly) does not surprise me. It has to do with habitual movement patterns and compensations we engage in, all unconsciously. Often we will find we get injuries / pain more on one side of the body than the other...

Brooklyn, if you come back here, I think Angie has pairs of Ecco sneakers that she reserves for indoors. But I might be wrong about that.

I was wearing simple FitFlop sandals at home for a long time in summers. But then I couldn't get the kind with the adjustments to make them fit me and they were too wide. So next year I will be on the hunt for something new. I like something slip-off/ slip - on so laced shoes don't work for me for indoor footwear.

I will echo the advice of all those who say don't go barefoot on hard floors at home. I also had to learn this the hard way (ha ha).

Sharan, thank you for your sympathy. My arm also started hurting the other day and I feel like my warranty has run out. :(

Kinnick, thank you for sharing your experience in this. I have a few pairs of sneakers that not only don’t hurt, but probably have enough space for an insole. I will be getting insoles asap. I also have Salomon hiking shoes that feel fine. I might take them and the new Merrell insulated boots on our trip. A friend raves about Hoka. I’ve always worn Salomon, though, because they have a tall toe box for my upturned big toes.

I highly recommend finding a well padded sneaker with a low foot drop also known as the pitch. A totally flat shoe has drop (Altra makes this) and most running shoes are about 8 to 10 mm. A 4 to 6 mm helped me. O drop tend to stretch my calves too much. Topo and New Balance make some low drop shoes. I am pretty sure that Hoka does as well plus their hiking boots are very comfortable. Hard soles (as in most Danner hiking boots) are a no go. Oofos makes some recovery shoes that might give you some relief. You can also try Orthofeet although I would probably go with a high foam new balance shoe first.

Never go barefoot especially on stone floors. Most clogs are too hard soled for my feet although I have found mephisto to be okay. I think you are better off with a high foam sneaker.

Also, get rid of shoes that have worn out soles. Expect to replace your sneakers more often.

No recommendations, just sympathy. Foot pain can be so debilitating. It's informative, reading through the experiences and treatments here.

I hope you find relief soon, and in a way that allows you to wear clogs as well as to keep up your activities!

You may find a different brand of clogs works better than the ones you've been wearing. I know different brands can feel so different, anyway.
