I still love mine, and bought the beautiful bronze shoes with the chocolate box ribbons this year. I suspect I am either a Theatrical Romantic or some sort of Gamine in Kibbe though ( can’t quite decide) so perhaps shine is part of that. Overall, the pandemic has made me dress more subdued especially in the winter. Lots of monochrome although not always. I break out the red or the bronze at times.
I am sorry Janet that you are missing the dark hair I can’t believe I am saying this because as you know I am one of the biggest promoters of natural hair on the forum. But should you reconsider your decision to go grey??

I hadn't thought much one way or the other about liking or not liking metallics. I think I only have two clothing items that have a metallic aspect and everything else is accessories.

I found a glittered denim jean jacket at the Rack, with gold buttons even. This safari-puff jacket has quite a shine to it, so I find it reads as metallic.

I have been on a bit of a hunt for items with gold hardware lately and I have found some items that I like at Anine Bing. I nearly always wear gold jewelry and I prefer to match my metals.

I love metallics, but, mostly since the pandemic, I have been craving more basic wardrobe items. I’m not really sure why, maybe it’s just a yearning to return to simpler times, or to get back to nature. I haven’t gotten rid of anything yet (except a gold purse that was past prime anyway), as metallics still catch my eye and make me smile, but we’ll see.

I’ve never really gotten the Kibbe thing or figured out how it applies to me, but I get what some of you are saying about shine and contrast. Maybe I’m not as high-contrast as I used to be and tolerate less shine now? That makes me a little sad. I miss my dark hair.

Nevertheless, silver and cool metal tones have always been better on me than warmer ones. I think it’s time to lean into that.

For me the change in my hair has been the deciding factor. During the pandemic I went natural and now warm tones especially with shine just don't seem to make me happy- so no gold nor bronze. I will do a little pewter or silver with a crisp white shirt or bright cool colors. Maybe it is my grandmother's voice in my head telling me when the gray arrives it is time to add bright living color. She passed after 90 years of living and was buried in the most amazing blue and silver evening gown that she carefully selected for the occasion.

Whilst I don't have any metallic coats or jackets, I have a few metallic items in my wardrobe - particularly footwear. I am always looking for flat gold sandals in summer, which get worn out each season because they get worn so much. My black knitted dress has a silver thread through it, I like how subtle the metallic is and have been wearing this recently - out for dinner and when catching up with friends. The gold linen tank is a nice piece to wear in summer and quite subtle too being a dulled gold. My blouse, tiered skirt and high heels were all acquired before the pandemic - they are more special occasion items. The little clutch was inexpensive and gets used often because I am not precious about it and is super useful and goes with most things in my wardrobe.

@chewyspaghetti's point is a good one - as a Romantic/ Soft Classic Kibbe (undecided), shine is the one thing I can count on to not look too 'over' on me (it was the one point my colour consultant made sure to emphasise, that I can wear shimmery eyeshadow etc even on casual workdays). So perhaps it could be more that you feel (rightly or wrongly) that metallics don't 'harmonise' with your natural balance as much anymore?

That said though, maybe it's a subtle trend shift? 'Brightly' shiny metallics feel a little Y2k - I find even myself not being drawn to my usual yellow gold accessories as much anymore (see photos #1 & #2) as in the 2010s. I bought some bronze flats a while ago that I've finally been reunited with (#3), & am thinking that's maybe the direction I want to move in instead (@Brooklyn's dyeing expertise has got me thinking maybe I need to buy some copper leather dye lol)?

Either way, I have been introducing a little more 'shine' as a texture-adjacent dressing method lately, though it's been more in the realm of satin finish fabrics & *slightly* glossy dark leather as opposed to outright 'blingy' shiny, if that makes sense?

Hmm food for thought, thanks for the thread

Brooklyn, I tend to feel the same way about metallics — but more so in the cooler months, when my entire palette shifts darker and more muted. It lightens and brightens in the summer, almost out of necessity — it feels oppressive to dress in most muted colors in our heat and humidity. So a lighter silver complement has been fairly natural for me.

I do wonder if the shift to my greyer hair has put me off of warmer metallics a bit. Somehow I think those shades worked better for my when my hair was darker and maybe more neutral than my now much more decidedly cool-toned hair. I’m also not nearly as excited to use my old fake Bao Bao tote now that I have the authentic thing in a very usable grey backpack form — that bag has become my go-to, subbing in for a lot of when I would have used a black or silver bag in the past.

I think I’ll put the bronze/warm metallic items in the holding zone and revisit in a few months. We will probably be in a big construction zone by then, so I suspect this winter will see me using a more scaled-down portion of my wardrobe though.

Wearing metallics takes some getting used to. I had some shiny silver loafers for months before I was brave enough to just do it. They seemed fine in no time. Now they have joined a whole herd of silver and gold, pewter and bronze metallics. They are a year round favorite now. I still wonder if I look like an old escapee from a Florida home, but I no longer care.

It took me a while to figure out that I don’t like shiny metallics. I like a dull or muted metallic, like pewter, brass or bronze, or a dark (antique) gold. Copper is borderline. Rose gold, silver and light or yellow gold are too bright. I did read recently that for my skin colouring that’s a good choice. So maybe it’s that. But also shiny metallics are like bright colours to me, so I don’t feel comfortable in them. But I do like the non-shiny versions, and still wear them. They are a great way to add some lightness especially when I don’t wear much white.

My brightest metallic is my ombre bag. But it’s ombre, so it gets a pass.

I have three pieces - an old bomber that I still enjoy- but I don’t wear quite as much as I used to, and new last year gold sandals. And just added this very studded belt.

I think metallic was trending strongly probably 2018 ish - esp rose gold- and not quite as much now. I still do like metallic pieces a lot.

I do like your metallic pieces Janet- I wonder if they will come into their own again in winter? It is hard to know how permanent a style shift is- I grapple with this. But I can see your metallic boots jeans and maybe your mixed media trench looking really sharp. I think the new boyfriend blazer would lean to silver not gold- what do you think?

Interesting!

I’m still feeling my silver sneakers. And my silver Milly tote from ages ago still gets use in summer, so those are a good complement. I’ve worn my old muted silver Sofft sandals a few times this summer, but I’ve worn the new white and black fisherman sandals a lot more. I still like the multi-metallic Ancient Greek Sandals too. But three metallic boots aren’t striking my fancy for fall/winter as much. Hmmm.

Today I’m wearing my copper Free People sandals (prompted by this post to pull out a metallic!).

I wear my gold Birks a lot, but consider them a nude to me. I figure the gold elevates them enough to wear to events, where I wouldn't feel right with my black Arizonas.
The main thing I'm off is a lot of color these days. It just feels too attention getting, which I prefer to leave to others at this point in my life.

Very shiny metallics might feel a bit overwhelming. If so, try the more matte/muted/brushed versions instead.

The same could be said about i.e. garment fabrics and jewellery. Whether you prefer more shiny or more matte materials might have to do with what harmonizes with your skin and hair. (Reading tip: Search for "Shine" at Imogen Lamports blog Insideoutstyle and you will find several articles on this subject.)

I’m right there with you Janet . Even this summer , I’ve worn my casual metallic sandals ( a pair each in gold and silver ) exactly once I think . I donated any metallic bags I had a few years ago and don’t miss any of them . I have a pair of very shiny pewter oxfords like kkards’ which I wore once last winter and took a lot of grief ( in a fun way ) at work over them . I just am not feeling that level of extra anymore . I don’t know anything anoht Kibbe but the comment posted above made me wonder . Any metallics left in my wardrobe are for holiday wear , and even then I’m more drawn to velvet or silk now . Interesting eh ?

I have exactly 3 metallic items. I did put the metallic T in my holding zone (and actually removed it from my Finds!) but when I picked up the hunter green faux leather pants and the two worked so well together, I put it back into rotation!

A new pair of sandals has gold accents, but the style is pretty casual, with cork soles. If I could find the exact replacements for a pair of silver flats I had 6 years ago, I’d drop the cash, but otherwise I’m not looking to add metallics to my closet.

I'm with you, Janet. I'm also with cat2 though. Do NOT pass on your metallics.

Personally, I've veered away from pure metallic for the last 8 to 10 or so years. I only have dressy metallic shoes that are old, old, old. But gorgeous, comfy, and do the job. I don't wear a metallic bag to match, either. I wear cream, red, or citron.

I used to have a casual gold bag as a wardrobe essential. Not any more.

I used to LOVE gold boots. They scuff too easily for my walking lifestyle, and I don't enjoy the look of them weathered. White shoes are much hardier and easier to maintain.

I passed on my gold and silver jackets many years ago.

I DO like metallic thread running through colours like navy, white, reds, and pinks. Especially knitwear. Love!

I love pure metallic on others, of course! Off the top of my heard, Suz, Bijou and Joy in silver, Brooklyn in gold and bronze, and Suntiger in bronze are glorious :)

Maybe it’s just the season. It’s hard to think about wearing metallics when it’s so hot! Perhaps you could hang on to them until after the colder months have passed to see if you want to keep them in the mix.

I have worn some metallics in the past. but I am definitely not feeling them right now. Anything shiny has always made me feel a little "off", and I never could identify why until I delved into Kibbe. As a "natural" type, Kibbe says that shiny metals are not good for us, and we do better with accessories made of naturally textured materials or antique/aged type of metals. These are absolutely what I am drawn to and feel best in.
I wonder if, as we age, the shine gets to be too much for changing coloring/contrasts? Just a thought...

Hmmm. I have had a few metallic items low-key on my list for several years (A gold messenger-bag-style crossbody. A gold cape-style puffer. Pewter brogue oxfords.) but have never found exactly the right items. And I think for me, metallics have to be exactly right. (That puffer, for example: it needs to be gently metallic, not space-age metallic, iykwim.)

I'm not sure my attitude towards metallics has changed during the pandemic. But, I did wear a pair of gold ballet flats the other day in a casual outfit and they were very much remarked upon -- positively, but it does seem to me that metallic items tend to be Noticed. I wonder if people are feeling a bit more retiring after so much time isolating at home?

I would consider whether you would wear them for holiday events. If so, don’t purge.

Angie’s post on metallic jackets today made me think a bit about my changing attitude towards metallics. Oddly I seem to have veered away from wearing them in the last couple of years even though I’m still attracted to them in the abstract. I’m refraining from buying any more at the moment, but unsure of whether to give away any of my current unworn metallic items — boots, bags, jackets…

I have a pair of bronze boots and a coordinating faux Bao Bao bag, which have gone unworn. My metallic jackets have been similarly orphaned. I have not let them go because it feels like the pandemic put a crimp on wearing a LOT of items.

I am trying to figure out if this is a style shift, or a temporary break. Is anyone else feeling this way about metallics? Has the pandemic era made many of us a bit more subdued in style? Any thoughts about this?
