Gigi, thanks for the words of wisdom.
Anna, those are great choices. I can see the Rachel Comey for me, especially; they are called "distressed silver," which appeals to me.
Una, yours are gorgeous. Are they also comfy?
Ambergreen, that's food for thought. I would consider a monkstrap style.

If I didn't already have some footwear with a wide, two-buckle monk strap like this and also a silver-and-gray oxford-type shoe, I would be considering these just-about-half-price Fluevogs...

I am wearing my pewter D2squared or whatever the brand is oxfords today. I love the combo of metallic and masculine... I'm not sure this is your pair. For some reason I am crazy picky about Oxford - shape, heel, detail. The right pair is out there!

Firecracker, good for you for sticking to your guns about comfort! It's tough to return things that look so good and go with your wardrobe, but if you have to suffer when wearing them, it's really best to pass until something better comes along. It can really be frustrating with shoes. It seems like shoemakers are making things cheaper and cheaper these days, and there aren't many choices for a comfortable but fashionable shoe.

Thanks, everyone! You've helped me figure out:
I'm pretty sure I "need" a pewter oxford, and I'm pretty sure it's not this one.

abc, Suz, Joy, Dashielle, kellygirl, Caro, Diane, CocoLion, Viva, Sveta, MuseumGal: thanks for pointing out the ways in which these shoes do work for me, color and style-wise. I wasn't sure, but you confirmed my inkling that I could use them. I hadn't even considered what might have been obvious to some of you (I guess I all but said it in my post, and yet I didn't quite grasp it): I could replace my black ones with pewter.
But once I actually consider replacing the Josef Seibels with these, it starts to become clear that they will not give me the same comfort, even with my heel inserts. They were very comfy at first with the heel inserts, but they do not really give as I move around in them.

unfrumped, you are so astute!. Do you read my mind, or what? I hadn't put my finger on it, but your comment made me realize I'm not in love with how these look on my feet. I like that they are tapered, but something about the shape seems to point out the high volume of my feet rather than flattering them. I actually do like the shape of the Josef Seibel on my foot--through the arch and toe. I'm just not crazy about the high vamp on it, and could certainly do without the heel.

Sterling, another mind reader! If I'm going to replace current oxfords rather than adding an occasional shoe to my already bursting wardrobe, I do want better quality and comfort, along with style. Dang it--I think that's why I end up spending a lot on shoes. Once I go for it, though, I do appreciate and wear them. Along those lines, Sveta, I think this synthetic liner might be okay; it's soft and supple. But it doesn't seem to allow the shoes to give with my foot like I'm used to. And when I tried to put them on without socks, wow! I sure felt the difference between these and all-leather shoes. I feel I'm being quite the princess about shoes!

So, the hunt is on, and I'm in no hurry. Please keep your eyes peeled for me! I'm signing on to Ascetic, Asthetic August, so I will wait till September to look in earnest. If the right shoe happens to turn up at Nordstrom, I can use some of the Nordstrom Notes I'm racking up lately toward a pair that will work better for me.

Meanwhile, Missvee, I could try some metallic shoe cream. Interesting idea!

After reading your post I was going to say that you don't need them. Then I saw the pics and they bookend your hair much much better than the brown or black pair. If you can afford, I'd say keep, given that they are quite comfortable.

They look fabulous on you, so I guess the only concern is comfort. Do you need them to be 10-12 hour shoes? If so then the synthetic lining might bother you.
Another thought - you could always order some of that metallic shoe cream that Diana and others have used, and turn your black ones into a pewter finish.

I like them a lot! I would MUCH prefer them to black actually.
I am not sure about non-leather lining:does it bother you? They are not all created equal and some of them make my feet sweat and others don't.
So - the look is great. If fit, comfort and lining work for you too then keep!

Do you like how your feet look in them?
I have a very weird eye for how I want my feet to look in shoes- something about how they taper or don't , and showing a bit of shaping through the mid foot and sometimes whether the top is continuous or broken up by seaming or brogue detail.

I think these are a great replacement for the black oxfords. Silver seems to go with everything. I like this smoky silver better than mirrored silver--it's a little more subtle. Keep if they are comfy. I can see how these could work beautifully in your wardrobe.

Deborah, I haven't worn them a lot. But I am wanting to wear them more. Lately I've gotten more pants that would work with oxfords--chinos that I can roll, and skinnies in corduroy, denim, and other fabrics, plus slouchy pants that I've made. I can wear oxfords longer into the cool months than I do ballet flats. The Born Arlettas have been something of a color orphan in my closet, and yet I've worn them quite a bit in spite of that. The black ones are a more recent addition, and they were to replace black Nayas I got last fall and loved wearing but which became too small (I developed a small bunion). I've been trying to wear the black ones, especially to work, because they are so comfy. But they are hard for me to style so that they feel cool and not frumpy. I like your suggestion of wearing oxfords with skirts, though I haven't done it yet.

I like them. The pewter is an excellent colour for you and the shape of the shoe looks good. I think these could become a workhorse for you. How often do you wear oxfords? I imagine these would work nicely with skirts or dresses too so they could be very versatile.

Wow, Firecracker, I think the color of these oxfords is just perfect for you. I think they look smashing. They have quite a bit different vibe from the black ones.

But I am definitely with the others on wearing them around the house for quite a bit before committing. There's nothing worse than an uncomfortable shoe mocking you in the closet!

I don't know anything about synthetic lining on the inside. I wonder if that prevents them from losing their shape? I don't know how that affects comfort, breathability, etc.

You're right, Suz. The whole point of oxfords for me, or more than half the point anyway, is comfort. I choose them when I want a flat shoe with foot coverage, and also style.

Of course you need metallic oxfords!! And so do I, now that I have seen these on you!

Only if the comfort is there, though. Walk around in them a while, see how they feel -- if they're not super comfortable, you'll get mad at them.

When Gigi pointed out these metallic oxfords at Banana Republic, I decided to try them. I got a 40% discount for some sale (today is Tuesday sale, or whatever). They were back-ordered and finally arrived today.

Now I can't remember why I thought I needed metallic oxfords. But I had been thinking about getting some, and I had made some remark to that effect. Can anyone tell me if I do in fact need these? (In any sense of the word need.)

I do love my metallic shoes: ballet flats, sling-back Mary Janes, high-top sneakers, and peep-toe booties all get pretty much wear. They bookend with my silvery-brown hair.

These are an especially good shade for me, a grayish-taupe pewter, with a subtle shine. I like my metallics subdued, rather than bright and shiny. More antiqued than space-age.

The fit is good. Comfort is okay, and very good when I add my heel inserts, which fit in them fine. I am unsure of the style for me. Do I want a refined oxford like this? What about the fact that they are leather on the outside but not leather-lined?

They are different than what I have--the brown Born Arletta and the black Josef Seibel Tina. I love the Born Arlettas and have worn them a lot since getting them at NAS several years ago. I am highly ambivalent about the Seibels but wear them because they are comfortable. I have been thinking about--and searching online for--a black oxford replacement, though I'm not entirely convinced I want black.

1-3: the new pewter oxfords (Banana Republic, Brelyn)
4: my current caramel brown oxfords (Born, Arletta)
5: my current black oxfords (Josef Seibel, Tina)

Thanks for looking! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
