Yes, such fun stuff, and I am continuing to watch a few minutes here and there of the program. And a strong theme this year: Fashion is Art.

Janet--I love C. Siriano, especially because he makes affordable lines, as well. I have a pair of Payless heels by him that are still going strong, years later.

Staysfit--I'm sure this has been an issue for years that has been neglected. I have seen adaptable fashion, but more at like, the Macy's level, not high fashion. And it seems that Burke is ushering in more high fashion looks.

Roberta--I did not see that interview, but maybe I will. When you say "educating photographers," I am guessing she meant they should crouch and shoot at her level, rather than point the camera down. Her organization, Tilting the Lens, seems to be a clever reference to that.

I remember learning years ago, when I studied special education, that you should crouch or sit in a chair when having a conversation with someone in a wheelchair. Because otherwise it is a strain on their necks all day!

Sinead Burke had a really interesting interview that night on what the Gala and fashion have done (and not done) for the disabled. I mean, those stairs LOOK great, but half of the women can barely make it up them. But many lines are showing models with disabilities occasionally. You could also see her politely educating the photographers on how to shoot a small person or someone in a wheelchair.

I need to catch up as I haven’t seen the Met Gala pictures yet…. Now I’m primed to pay closer attention. My mother has been disabled/handicapped since she had polio as an 6 year old. I have always wished there were better options for her. Things that are mindlessly simple for me like hooking a bra, pulling a shirt over my head, pulling up snug jeans or leggings, buttons, zippers, shoe laces, etc. create much difficulty for her to the point that she often cannot find fashionable clothing she can manage. Fashionable shoes that can accommodate an ankle brace are incredibly difficult if not impossible to find and fit. I hope these issues are included in what these women are discussing. Inclusivity in fashion is often about weight or size which are important issues, but in my experience, stylish options for people like my mom have been extremely limited.

Out doing family travel, but now back for a while.

I am slowly catching up on the Met Gala from a few days ago--a fantastic event that is fun if you know nothing about it, but abundantly rewarding when you know more, because of themes, histories, design...and the minds and faces who participate.

Here is a still from the Vogue video I found striking--on the left is disability advocate and fashion expert Sinead Burke, and on the right is Ashley Graham, world-famous plus-size model. They are discussing advances in inclusivity for people with physical disabilities in high fashion, some advocated for by Burke. It's something I had not considered, focusing on the obvious, like architecture/building accessibility.

Actually, what I like is their dresses--very classical and elegant against this sort of pastoral, Grecian background. (Is that wisteria painted on the wall?) Graham wears that gauzy nude drape like a goddess. And Burke is in Christian Siriano--one of my favorites. Evident in some shots is the shoulder plates--black, beak-like sequins arranged to look like armor. Reminding me of warriors, or the opera.

(I can't find a good shot of these shoulder plates. Sometimes photographers drop the ball.)
