What would I wear if I had to start over? Wow... That's a toughie! I've been thinking about this some - an alternative to "what would I grab if I had to stuff it all into a bag on the way out" fire drill game.

2 Levi 505s: straight leg dark wash
Office trousers, black
2 pencil skirts: black, grey

3 ribbed turtlenecks: raspberry, deep purple, cream
3 Express Portofino blouses (white, black, teal)

1 teal cardigan
1 black suit coat/ blazer
1 lined hide coat (motorcycle jacket)

1 pair Veronica shorties, black
1 pair knee high boots, black
1 pair oxfords/ brogues, metallic
1 pair ballet flats, metallic

+ socks/ tights, undergarments, et cetera

I could get by on that, if I had to, for about a month. By the end of that month, I'd want to set it all on fire, but it would get me through. I don't typically have events or camping or whatnot this time of year, and that would see me through if I had parties and whatnot that I needed to attend - perhaps not in any standout manner, but I'd be able to do just about anything in that combo, I think.

For a longer span, I'd add some "statement skinnies" - probably in leopard for winter - some coloured skinnies, and a few maxi skirts.

Kind of fun thinking about a clean slate, but would be work to find, fit and pay for all at once! For one week:

1. Jeans. Dark, slim.

2. Knit tops for weekends, interesting color, feature or texture, long or 3/4 sleeved, fitted enough to wear under topper. (2)

3. Cardigans or knitted toppers, probably gray or dark, to wear over knit tops. Perhaps one to be black V-neck pullover. (2)

3. Running clothes and shoes. Shorts, tights, short and long sleeved wicking shirts, sports bras, socks, outer layer jacket or heavier wicking top.

4. Work pants. Black slim, navy slim, black straight leg. (3)

5. Work tops. Dark-bright, solid or patterned long or 3/4 sleeve thin sweaters. (5)

6. Work top. One dressy white blouse or soft layering sweater.

6. Work toppers, blazers or jackets. Warm, coordinate with tops, textured, with interesting features (accent trim, asymmetrical, buttons, etc.) (5)

7. Shoes. Cons or leather sneakers, black flats, and black low-heeled mary jane pumps. (3)

8. Accessories: a few different scarves, bracelets, and a couple of necklaces to mix and match with all of the above. Gloves to match coats.

9. Coats. One medium weight trench coat. One lined olive or bark color nylon or twill utility jacket long enough to cover all toppers. One colorful warm fleece jacket, perhaps orange or rust.

10. Undergarments and socks.

If I doubled all this, it would work for the whole cool-cold season, I think. Throw in at least 3 red sweaters or toppers (for basketball games) and I would need nothing else.

Thanks for the thought provoking post and answers. It shows me a path to follow on the season-changing purge coming up.

Awesome to hear the responses . . . I think they are nicely highlighting current favorite pieces and reflecting personal style.

For me something like this would have to include some sort of insurance payout, since my budget is tight ATM. I would have my purple and black specs with small silver accents and the white gold and diamond studs I wear daily as starting points.

1) bras, undies
2) loungewear, probably leggings and oversized tees or sweatshirts
3) Work gear for the field-- cargo pants, technical tops, gortex jackets, work boots, hats, replacing my pack -- also good for weekend fishing and hiking trips
4) Work out wear-- running tights, wicking tops, shorts, and shoes, plus a HR monitor
4)Shoes would be a big one since I can rarely stand to wear the same pair more than a few times a week. Boots would be the big one, prefferable a tall brown rugged pair, a pair of black booties-- chelsea with a heel or a similar style, and a pair of docs or similar boots in a cherry, red polished black, or purple. Plus, I would replace my burgundy gortex euro sneaks for dry casual days.
4) Outerwear and jackets is another big one for fall. I definitely need a long hooded rainjacket (im thinking camel trench) and another coat (probably a wool peacoat or toggle coat, black, navy, or dark plaid).
5) I would replace my black leather jacket with a similar drapey one, and buy a new military jacket in olive green. I'd pick up a navy sweater hoodie or sweatshirt to wear as a layer underneath for days where I needed an extra layer but the coats were too much.
6) I would replace my Pendleton beanie and buy a wool hat, maybe a burgundy fedora.
7) Bottoms, a pair of bootcut jeans, a pair of gap cotton skinny pants, a pair of TR camerons, and a pair of heathered dark wool slacks.
8) A dark button down, 5 layering tees, 2 fine pullovers, a navy turtleneck or crew pullover, a black sweater with a floaty hemline, and burgundy sweater with a boxy high low hemline.
9) oversized shawl collar textured grey cardi to keep at work.
10) a navy drapey cardi with a high neck
11) small to medium cross-body in a dark brown, maybe a second in orange or black, and a textured, studded black jeans belt
12) several scarves, plaid or southwestern patterns, orange, burgandy, forest, black, navy, grey and brown colorways
13) Oversized rock tee.

I would wear the fine pullovers under other layers or as tops with the slacks. The tees would mostly be worn under jackets, the boxy sweater and cardis, and under the button down. Everything else would mix and match for work and weekend.

Ooh - fun exercise!

1 week of fall/winter clothes:

- good base garments (2-3 bras, 6-8 undies, socks)
- 2-3 sets of workout gear (tees and shorts are fine)
- pjs
- distressed dark jeans
- black skinnies
- one or two fluid fit or oversized button-down shirts in jewel tones
- one cowl-neck tee in a jewel tone
- one plaid flannel shirt
- three camis or layering tees for underneath
- one long-sleeve oversized drapey tee.
- two textured pullover sweaters (probably oversized) in a light color and dark color (white and ink?).
- converse or toms shoes in black or gray.
- black booties
- black leather jacket
- Wool pea coat?

I'd wear the distressed dark jeans with a layering tee and plaid flannel, or any of the buttondowns for tomboy looks - adding a sweater when necessary for warmth. I'd wear the converse shoes for the tomboy looks.

I'd wear the buttondowns over black skinnies with black booties to church or semi-professional meetings - or the cowl-neck tee with black skinnies.

The black leather jacket could be a topper over either set. Add the pea coat for when it's really cold.

later I'd add
- dark polished jeans,
- gray, white or olive jeans (or all three)
- several more tops (maybe a sassy sweatshirt too), including patterns and stripes
- a pair of wide-leg dressy slacks
- oxford shoes, and probably another pair or two - camo Toms, for example
- tall boots

Neat to think of how little I'd really want if I was starting over. I feel a purge coming on....

For me a week's worth of clothes, and transitioning into winter would be two different lists. I think for just a week of fall I could get by on:

2 jeans (one BF one skinny)
bright cardigan
neutral pullover sweater
5 drapey tees
1 jacket - leather moto or cotton blazer
snazzy sneakers
booties

(underwear as needed of course)

some of this actually was in my 'FL winter' capsule post http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-fl-winter

1. Good bra and underwear!
2. Workout wear and gear for outdoor active pursuits.
3. BF jeans, another pair of slim trousers of some kind.
4. 2 VC tube skirts, one Halogen seamed skirt
5. 5 to 10 interesting knit tops or sweaters in colours that make me happy, including at least 2 turtlenecks
6. 2 silk blouses
7. 1 crisp white button up shirt and one in a colour if I could find it
8. 1 leather jacket
9. 1 fabric blazer
10. 2 interesting scarves
11. Trench coat
12. Wool peacoat
13. Gloves
14. Hat
15. 2 patterned belts
16. 3 pair booties (and, since this is a fantasy wardrobe) knee high boots
17. 1 fab dress
18. PJs

This isn't exactly a "lean" closet but if I bought all these items together and mindfully, I think I could get by on this for quite a while. This would last more than a week, obviously -- I am thinking it could take me into winter. I can't really wear the VC tube skirts in winter but I love them so much I would make them extend as long as possible.

Ideally, I would add a suit to this list. But that wouldn't be a replacement item since I don't currently own one.

Fun exercise, Elly! It makes us boil it down to essentials and really think hard about lifestyle and time spent in various pursuits.

I'd start by replacing my knitted riding pants in black and olive. Then I'd add long silk blouses in cream and a print. After that it would be a replacement for my dark eggplant sheath dress and a leather moto jacket.

What about shoes? Do I have to replace my shoes, too? If so, it would be two pair of low-heeled or wedge booties. One black, one taupe.

After that, probably I'd need my slouchy track pants in a dark neutral, followed by some sweaters in grey, burgundy, black and green. I'd get tees (my new favorite is everlane) and a denim jacket next, probably. And maybe some dressy knee boots in black and/or taupe.

I guess I'd need to replace some skirts, too. Hm, not sure if I'd replace any skirts...I'd miss my purple waxed skirt that Annagybe gave me, but it's getting too big anyway. I'd probably look for a dark neutral lace skirt, either full or pencil.

Interesting that it didn't take me that long to come up with a list and imagine some outfits with it, yet looking at my actual closet leads me to despair. Also, I seem to have suddenly decided that I like cobalt blue. Hmmm.

2 pairs dark wash baby bootcut or straight leg jeans (possibly one black, one dark blue)

Black low heel ankle boots appropriate for snow/ice (something with a sturdy, grippy sole but still refined enough to wear with casual dresses)

Flats in black, grey, or perhaps teal or red

Black or dark grey oxfords

Fun sneakers or similar walking shoes

Black cardigan

3 long-sleeved tees (grey, white, and black)

V-neck sweater in grey, white, or possibly cream

Black leather biker jacket

Lightweight black puffer jacket (like the one I have now)

Knee-length dress, preferably jersey knit, in black, red, or cobalt blue

Some sort of interesting non-jeans trousers. I imagine something that is cut like my favorite baby bootcut jeans but made from something like a heavy twill with a bit of stretch, in herringbone or tweed

Two abstract printed knit tops (featuring teal, cobalt, red, or lime green)

Two perfectly fitting long sleeved button down shirts, one red or white, the other pinstriped. Possibly a lighter-colored chambray shirt, too.

A drapey black blazer or similar jacket

A beaded or similarly fancy tank top, ideally in a silk sweater-type knit, in dark teal, cobalt, or dark grey

Waterproof trench coat that will fit over the other jackets in charcoal grey, cream, or some kind of black and white pattern

Medium-length dangly silver earrings. I feel naked going out without earrings!

Grey, white, or cobalt blue leather tote bag and medium clutch bag

The main combinations will be one of: long-sleeved tee + sweater or blazer, knit top + blazer or cardigan, and button down shirt + sweater, blazer, or cardigan, all worn with jeans or trousers. I might also throw in a black pencil skirt. The dress could be worn with any of the toppers and could be layered with one of the button down shirts, too. The fancy tank top is mainly destined to be worn with jeans and the blazer or biker jacket for a night out, although if I manage to get more adventurous it could be layered with one of the button down shirts.

Since this is a fantasy wardrobe, the jacket will be a Schott NYC Moto Trench, the sweater and cardigan will be cashmere, and everything will fit beautifully. In this fantasy life I am also going to work in a casual office three days a week or so, as well as going to a holiday party and out for a fancy birthday dinner.

1. black dress pants
2. patterned dress pants, houndstooth or tweed in b/w plus possibly gray
3. black and white striped VC tube skirt
4. two silk blouses, one cobalt and one b/w print
5. three drapey tees, one black, one white, and one patterned in either b/w/gray or b/w/cobalt
6. banded baseball top in jewel tone
7. black heeled booties, vaguely cowboy inspired
8. dark silver flats
9. antique silver belt
10. boyfriend jeans (too hot for slims/skinnies)
11. black linen cardigan
12. cobalt clutch!

It is hot here in the fall. I can't even wear a blazer. The main way I "do" fall is by darkening my color palette.

Unlimited funds. A week of clothes

1. set of running gear for Fall/winter with transitional hat, jacket, gortex running shoes...gotta be able to run!
2. leather jeans- black, leather skirt -black, black jeans, black dress, blue jeans
3. gold, maroon, green, and white blouses that can be used with all bottoms
4. black leather blazer + black tux blazer that can go over all bottoms and the dress.
5. a black purse,
6. a black pair of perfect riding boots, and a pair of black short booties. Tall boots to be used with skirts and dresses. Short boots with jeans and pants.

I would add more tops options and not add more bottoms as the weeks go by. I am happy to reuse bottoms every week but like to vary the tops more. At some point, having a different dress or skirt color might appeal.

I like black in fall. I run hot so sweaters are not needed before winter.

What the fox say? scat man!

This sounds fun, Elly! I might like to do mine with photos, but that will take a while to get together. In the meantime, I am bumping, and giving it some thought.

Inspired by another thread and all the capsuling going on on the forum. For fun, and for those that don't have the time or the pieces to pull together full capsules IRL.

Here is the mission, should you accept . . .

You have to replace you wardrobe for fall. Something happened and you no longer have or can no longer wear your clothes. You need to replace things, starting with a week or so worth of choices, plus any special items you need for your occasional life, and transitioning into winter.

List and or describe what you would replace or purchase.

Then, if you want to take it a step further, explain how you'd combine the pieces in your capsule or capsules.

I think it will be interesting to see what people go for!
