I suppose navy with black shoes *can* be a bit Marine-like. What about oxblood or cordovan (purplish-brown) if the cognac seems too light for the occasion?

I love that family is weighing in on the groom's shoes, sigh...maybe there's a task you can assign the interested parties to keep them occupied with/territorial about something else?

Thanks everyone. I guess we will have to try on both options and see what everyone thinks is best. People (aka family) are so opinionated about the specifics of weddings! I believe I am leaning toward cognac, but I'm not 100% sold yet.

Aida, thanks for sharing pics! What a fun look!

For those who asked, the wedding is on a Sunday -- ceremony at 5:00, dinner to follow. It is at a nice restaurant. Very simple but elegant. Basically, it will be a nice dinner party with a pianist.

My SO has a navy pinstripe suit that I LOVE with very dressy cognac shoes. I didn't think I'd like it until I saw them together. So elegant.

Cognac/cordovan/brown are beautiful with navy for daytime while black can dress up navy for evening or dressier occasion.
Can he try them on with the suit before you decide?

So fun to hear about your wedding plans! My DH wore black shoes to our wedding (but they wear Cons.....)

I love the vibe of your wedding from the glimpses we're getting, Marianna. You chose such a beautiful dress for yourself, but it doesn't look like a cookie-cutter version of what I'm seeing in most bridal stores (many friends marrying this summer.) I love that your hubby is wearing a nice suit, too. (My dad wore a gray suit to his wedding - he actually had never been in a tux until a very formal work dinner a few years back.)

I personally have a perpetual crush on cognac, so that's my personal preference. :)

Aida, love the picture of your husband - and his fab 2-toned shoes!

My hubby wears his navy slacks with cognac shoes and I really like that combo - it looks more fresh and interesting that navy and black.
Cannot go wrong with good cognac!

I think black also risks looking a bit sombre and stately-serious with navy sometimes, and you want a more joyous vibe here, so why not go with colour? Cordovan's a great suggestion to work with red hair as well as navy. Is he planning to wear something in his buttonhole? That could provide hue cues too (well, obviously not white shoes, but in terms of cooler or warmer colours etc).

Cognac or possibly 'oxblood' are a bit more trendy as far as I can tell, but black is the formal choice.

This is a tough question to answer because it all depends on the event, and the vibe/ambiance of the event. I had a small-ish wedding, overlooking the ocean - but everyone went very formal. It was kind of neat that way - waves crashing, the sun setting, and everyone dressed to the nines even though it wasn't supposed to be an overly formal event at all.

What kind of venue are you planning? How many people? What time of day? I got married at 4pm in early spring, and by the time the champagne was poured and appetizers were served, the sun was starting to set over the ocean. If it was noon, then I'd go for cognac shoes instead of black. Seems silly, but I sometimes figure 'time of day' into these things too.

Smiling here - very happy and excited for you.

Cognac or a reddish brown get my vote. I personally don't think brown/cognac footwear looks trendy, I would say it's classic but still fashion forward. My husband is VERY classic (but not conservative) in his dressing tastes and pretty much refuses to wear ANY black footwear.

I agree that the black shoes would be more formal and less distracting in photos. The cognac shoes would be more fashion-forward, but it depends on whether he wants that look or not.

Angie, Brian's specs are tortoise shell. Black is too harsh on him. (He probably won't wear these specs to the wedding though. Will stick to something more classic.)

Decisions, decisions.

Cognac will look more fashion forward and casual. Black will look more classic and formal. Both are killer looks - depends entirely on the vibe that you want to go for.

Are Brian's Japanese specs black too?

Black would be a more formal look, but cognac or cordovan could be nice if your wedding is more informal.

Black might be less distracting in your photos, though.

Only 97 days until my wedding and I'm trying to figure out the details of my groom's outfit!

He's wearing a navy blue pinstriped suit to the wedding. The Nordies stylist we worked with paired it with cognac colored shoes and we thought it looked great, but then my mom said he should wear black shoes so now I'm having doubts.

Considering he is a red head (the cognac shoes bookend his hair...) and the wedding isn't super formal or traditional, what color shoes do you think would look best with a navy suit? I haven't a clue...

Help!
