Re: running pants - they do come in different thickness and I've bought ones w/o lining in the past at the Nike store. They are cotton/poly blend, very thin with zippers at the bottom. My husband has a similar pair as well. I never wear anything heavier, and it should be sufficient for your climate.

All runners I know are also crazy about Thorlo socks, but I don't really have an opinion on them

Patience,

My husband runs 5 miles a day, and he wears long shorts. I just bought him 3 pair of basketball shorts at Olympia. He does not like anything shiny or flashy, so they are just plain, I think one pair has a white stripe along the side and the other two are solid.

I don't think he wears pants to run, but he does have a few pair of track pants to wear when he's coaching, or going to outdoor sporting events. He does not like them to have that mesh lining because he claims it is too hot (even here in New England). So, you might want to confirm with hubby how warm he wants the pants to be. They have track pants that have no lining at all--they can be difficult to find. They have track pants that have a mesh lining. And they have track pants that have an even thicker warmer felted lining.

Also, you might want to pick him up some running socks. I think this can make a big difference in comfort and is a nice thoughtful addition to his running gear. I am a firm beleiver in wearing the right gear for the right activity. Under Armour makes some nice athletic tops that come in various warmth levels. Some are lightweight and are just meant to wick sweat away from the skin. Some are a little thicker and meant for cooler days, and some are like neoprene sweatshirts, which are warm enough to wear when it's below freezing.

Adidas Climalite is available in all the pieces above. We just got some the day after Thanksgiving at the Adidas outlet. Nike makes DriFit which in my opinion is just as good as Adidas' Climalite. They are both designed to let the body breath (doesn't trap sweat), but not let the cold in.

I will just start another thread on lounge wear for men.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Sarah, Matt likes to run at Lady Bird Lake so it's a trail. Two inches above the knee sounds about right-- certainly no shorter. Does Climalite cover all the pieces you mentioned or just some?

My husband and I both run religiously, even in the cold weather. What we wear depends on the weather that day.
We are currently wearing two layers because of the cold. Bryan prefers Adidas Climalite (I'm more of an Under Armor/Nike girl myself) to run in. He has long sleeve running tops (purchased at the Adidas outlet in Round Rock), full-zip track jacket, running shorts (which are typically short, although his are only two inches above the knee fortunately), and running pants. (Longer versions of the shorts.) When it's REALLY cold, we wear those running tights under shorts or pants. And we always wear a drifit/climalite cap and gloves.
Layers are nice because as you warm up you can remove what you don't need. I usually just tie my track jacket around my waist if I get too warm.
Basketball shorts are not comfortable to run in according to my husband. They really don't give you the mobility you need. He rarely uses his pants since he prefers running in shorts regardless of the weather. Legs warm up pretty fast.
You want to dress 20 degrees warmer than it is when you run. You also want to avoid knits because when you sweat you'll get wet and and ultimately cold.
What's nice about most fitness apparel stores, is that they put the clothes in sections by sport.
Once we know what clothes work for us, we will check places like TJMaxx, Marshalls, or Academy. REI is nice, but they do tend to cater towards outdoor sports. Does your husband run on a trail or road?

I got Bryan the set at AE for pajamas over the holidays when we're staying at my family's house. We don't really have warm PJs. Bryan would not run in that or wear it out at all. He is not a fan of AE or of hoodies and sweats.

Hi Patience, my husband is also an avid runner. REI is a great place to find stuff as well as the Running Room (online or there might be one near you http://www.runningroom.com/hm/) and Roadrunner Sports (online http://www.roadrunnersports.com/ - lots of sales now). It's hard to find mid-length shorts for men - most of them are usually really short running shorts or very long basketball shorts. You might want to try your local sports megastore (like Sports Authority) or Marshalls/TJ Maxx as Marianne suggested.
I'm also having difficulty picturing my husband in sweatpants - he usually lounges in flannel PJ bottoms or athletic shorts.

We usually buy our running gear at a local store for runners - brands like Brooks and Asics mostly. In the past I've bought Brooks stuff online from their site when I had a discount card someone gave me. Their stuff is very nice. When I buy for myself, I also often look for bargains at Marshalls. Do you have REI? It's very popular in Seattle but I am not sure about other parts of the country. They have a good selection, too.

My husband runs but does not really have any good gear for it (except shoes). For Christmas he has requested some jogging pants for when it's cold out. What's a good place to look for this kind of thing? I'd also get him some new running shorts-- what's the thing to wear if you want a longer short?

Actually now that I've started on men's fashion, Sarah mentioned that she got her husband the AE lounge wear. Is this pretty typical? I'm having a hard time imagining my husband in it even though I buy it for myself.
