Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the Levi's.

I bought three different styles at GAP yesterday, but he was too tired to try them on last night. I'm very curious to see the difference in the fits. I've read that a slightly lower waist might look a bit more modern. I'm curious to see if my husband actually notices the difference in the cuts.

I was just poking around the levi site a little more and noticed the classic 501 is on sale...if you buy two you get both pairs for 39.50!
http://us.levi.com/product/ind.....54.3194290

The dark "rinsed", as they call it is very nice...and the black looks great too.

Funny you should mention it....I just bought these for my husband today:
http://us.levi.com/product/ind.....&sr=6

... in the black diamond wash. He already had the "rigid" dark wash. They are nice, almost dressy. They are only a little bootcut. If your man is big around the middle, a nice suit jacket will hide that belly and take the eye up to his shoulders. We found some at a thrift store that fit great and were really nice...as well as some Nordstrom dress shirts in his size.

Also, if he has not tried any other shoes recently, there really are a lot of stylish comfort shoes now for men and women...like Born or Wolky, gosh there are so many. There are usually stores at malls that specialize in "walking shoes" and it might be a good place to start with him. Good luck!

Hm, I am not an expert on men's jeans, but my husband wears the same size. I find that tapered jeans do not look good. I prefer a slightly relaxed fit where the leg is the same width all the way down. Sorry, I wasn't quite sure how to describe this - but with women's jeans like ones that are more flared - they will be slimmer in the thigh and then get wider at the bottom. I just know the jeans that look good on my husband are more straight leg. I can't quite visualize how boot cut jeans look for men, but like I mentioned earlier, definitely stay away from tapered.

I have found some great jeans (for good prices) at TJ Maxx. Everything in the store is arranged by size, so it's easy to go to one section and search for everything in his size. I have gotten him brands from Perry Ellis and Nautica that fit him well.

I would stay away from "young mens" styles that super baggy or the carpenter style jeans. I think a dark wash would also be good.

Good luck! I'm sure others will have more articulate suggestions. If I can find some pictures, I will post some examples.

I hope this isn't too off track - I'm trying to get my husband into a slightly more modern look, and I'm confused about men's jeans.

He will not go to the mall and try things on, so I am going to have to buy several different pairs of jeans and lock him in the bedroom and force him to put them on. LOL.

He is 52, size 40x30. (Not that tall and slightly overweight.) He works in a very casual/creative industry and wears jeans and sneakers every day. He won't budge on the sneakers - he has an unusually high instep and most shoes are very painful for him. There are only two brands of sneakers he can wear (Brooks and New Balance), and since it's a real matter of pain, I think I have to give him space on that one. But the sneaks do tend to make everything look more sporty.

He currently wears GAP Easy fit, which he says are the most comfortable. They used to make a nice black denim, but now they seem to have discontinued that one. I'm very confused about the different cuts for men. They all look pretty much the same to me! I'd like to get him a pair in a nice dark rinse, something a little more modern looking than the mid-color blue he wears, but without any whiskering or fading. I know he won't wear or look good in a very slim leg jean or a very young trendy jean. But there must be something out there that would up his game slightly!

Should he be in a straight leg? A boot cut? Would that look okay with sneakers? I'm thinking a tapered leg would not be good. Do I follow similar rules for women, in terms of shape when thinking about the leg?

He looks very nice when he wears jeans with a nice oxford shirt, so I think if I can move him into a darker rinse, it won't be that much of a shock to him and he'll just look a tiny bit more modern. Thanks in advance!
