Okay, with the caveat that I'm not a professional stylist, I am an attorney who has spent a lot of time with male attorneys working at the top law firms in the world, and I look at their suits quite a bit--here's my take.

I would much rather see someone in a higher-quality black suit than in a lower-quality suit of any other color. I think that quality and fit are really important when it comes to a men's suit. It sounds like this is your significant other's first and only suit. As such, I actually don't think there is anything wrong with it being black. He'll need to wear it not only for interviews, but also for occasions like weddings and funerals, right? Black is always appropriate for those. If this is going to be his only suit, I would absolutely prefer black over a light color (like a light grey or a tan), because lighter colored suits often look inappropriate at events like funerals, and can sometimes look seasonal.

My boyfriend is also an attorney at one of those big-time law firms, and he has several suits: charcoal grey, navy blue, navy blue pinstripe and black. He wears the black suit for work, interviews, etc., in the same way that he wears the rest, and I know of many other attorneys who do the same. (Also, as a female attorney, I own more than one black suit, and pretty much every other female attorney I know does as well.)

As for the stores you have listed, I would definitely go with a department store over BR or Express. My experience in looking at suits from BR and Express is that the fabric doesn't feel as nice, the suits don't seem to fall as well, and just don't look as good. You mentioned Nordstrom Rack--if you have outlets near you, you should also try going to Off 5th (the Saks outlet) and Neiman Marcus Last Call, if those stores are available in your area. Filene's Basement could also be a good try, although some of the suits there will be of higher quality than others. You should be able to find great deals at all of those stores--in fact, last week Off 5th was having a buy one get one free sale on men's suits!

mission accomplished! phew...

so, these are good places for a reasonable, first-time suit?

1) nordstrom
2) macys
3) express
4) BR

we are on a budget...his brother recommends burlington coat factory, but idk...

A black suit is not bad to have, really. I'm sure he could get some use out of it. Bryan has worn his at weddings, a funeral, and breaks up the suit and wears the pants and jacket as separates.
You can either brighten the black or try to find a less expensive suit in navy or grey. Try Express for sure. Bryan had a grey suit with a baby blue pinstripe from there. They tailor their suits very well, and they are fairly reasonable, especially if you can nab a coupon or two.
Obviously it depends on the job he's trying for, but I like this combination. It's bright but professional.

Cyan, I hope you can get the alterations canceled. However, we got a black suit at NAS this year, and I was hesitant about it, since the general guideline is a charcoal or navy color, but I was surprised that it actually worked very well. I am no expert, of course, but it looks really work-appropriate and modern. It's not a very "deep" black, if it makes sense.

Oh, I just saw Srujana's post -- for outlets, you can also check out the Off Fifth one in Milpitas. My brother's gotten some good buys there.

Ooo, I hope you are able to stop the alteration process. But I'm sure Angie will sort you out if you end up with the black suit.

In my non-professional opinion, I think you can lighten up/de-formalize a black suit by pairing it with a pale shirt: pale yellow, ecru, light blue. White might be too stark; pink and lavender are fun but not for an interview--and I don't know many guys that wear those colors, even though I keep trying to get my husband to :). Brighten it up with a colorful tie.

The black suit will be nice for going out -- I love that tieless look Angie has in her blog. Black on black, or black with saturated color (magenta, cobalt, etc.). Nice!

For non-wrinkle dress shirts, my husband has a few of the Nordstrom house-brand shirts. They feel really nice (cotton + organic cotton) and are truly wrinkle-free (I hate ironing). Although I'm not sure what body type your boyfriend is; I'd say the Nordstrom shirts would fit an average-to-fairly athletic build.

Don't know if you're tied down to the black suit already or if you're still on the hunt, but I was in Express the other day when we ran into you at Santana Row, and they had pretty nice men's suits in grey and pinstripe...just letting you know since your bf looks like he'd fit well into Express clothes. Good luck to you for dressing him up...and to him- really hope he scores the job!

(and like I mentioned before, if you guys have the time, try to make it out to Gilroy. Don't think those outlet prices can be beat for good suits...)

Cyan, it’s not a train smash. If the suit is being altered, I guess it’s too late. It’s been pinned and chalked. (But you might like to read this blog post anyway).

Uh oh. I’m going to put a BIG spanner in the works. Sorry :0(

Take back the black suit. Black is not a good option for interviews. Navy, grey or pinstripe is much better. Men’s black suits are for very formal occasions, or funerals. Of course, you can keep the suit if you want to and I know you’re in a pinch. But I feel it’s a waste of money. Suits are not cheap. And I wouldn’t be doing my job if I encouraged you to keep the black suit for interview purposes. I hope that make sense!

sorry for another non-womenswear post...but, what should an engineer wear to an interview? we just purchased a CK black, 2-button, side vent suit at nordstrom rack. since we may need it soon, we didn't have the option to shop around everywhere, or find another color (charcoal/navy).

what colors of shirt and tie are appropriate? while his original interview years ago was business casual for silicon valley (trousers, button down shirt, no tie, no suit jacket), i'm guessing he needs to look a little more sharp.

or maybe, i want him to look a little more sharp, lol...

any good non-iron/no-wrinkle mens dress shirts out there? any other thoughts are much appreciated
