After returning 3 pairs of shoes to Zappos, DH finally went to the mall. In Macy's he couldn't get anyone to wait on him, so he went to Nordstrom. He actually broke down and bought a $300 pair of Magnann "Dante" 7.5 M. The SA also insisted he buy some dress socks as well. They look very nice, but have the longer toe, but his tux pants are fuller so the shoes will look fine. Now I have to get him to wear them and practice dancing a bit.

The section that laces is much shorter than other lace up styles--this works better for his broad feet. My initial online searches were for a 7 wide, and these didn't turn up.

Amazing that he actually went to the mall by himself and bought something for himself. Some day we'll have to chat about men's body issues.

Thanks--I just ordered the Florsheims 7 3E after DH called and said it was silly to think the 7D's would fit with thin socks. I had no idea that men's shoe sizing was so unstandardized.

He might want to try the 3E, since Florsheim is claiming that 3E is "wide" and not "extra wide" on their website. However, other brands, such as Sperry, call EE "wide" and EEE "extra wide." I hadn't realized men's shoe widths were so unstandardized. I'd always assumed that EE was wide and EEEE was extra wide from my experiences with buying men's running shoes due to my bunions. You also may want to try searching Zappos using the W option for the width, since it seems to select whatever letter corresponds to wide for each shoe maker.

Diana, he prefers oxfords because he usually can't get his foot into a loafer.

Word Lily, that Florsheim is one of the pairs I got him and it is far too narrow even though he has had the same size in the same brand in the past. Zappos has another pair in 7 3E but he thinks that would be way too wide. As I look online I find lots of D's and EEEs but not much in E.

JAileen, I looked at Macy's website this morning. There is one possible shoe there available at a local mall, but it's going to be tough to get him there. I'm not sure they are patent leather either.

He's funny--he spends a fortune on gizmos and gadgets, but a pair of shoes?

My dad wears 8.5 EEE shoes, I believe. Lately he's been defaulting to brands that just run wider, though — Eccos at least some of the time. Doesn't look like most of the things he's wearing now are available in patent.

I don't know what you tried, but it looks like these Florsheims are available in wide width and small sizes and aren't too spendy.

I walked through Macy's yesterday and was surprised to see patent leather shoes in the men's shoe department. I just looked online and they have at least three pairs in patent. I don't know if they are wide enough, but maybe it's worth a look. They are in the $100 range.

I don't know off the top of my head but I can see what my husband's tux shoes are when I get home. He has wide (but size 10) feet.

Does DH have a preference for Oxford style or loafer style? He could try both if not - it's possible that one type might fit his feet better.

DH bought his own tux 11 years ago, but has always worn his black leather shoes with it. This year we upgraded getting him new tie, suspenders and cummerbund. At the zoo wedding he was the only guy in a tux who didn't wear black patent leather shoes. So we decided to get him some.

Now for the hard part: he has short, wide feet. He buys shoes a half size larger in a D, and many work out. Finding patent leather dress shoes has turned out to be a problem. I ordered two pair from Zappos. He tried them on last night and both are too tight. One of them has long, pointy toes and he thinks if he wore thin socks they would fit okay, but I am dubious. There is almost nothing out there that would fit him, although I found a few pairs of $600-$700 shoes that he in no way would want to buy unless they felt like marshmallows.

Meanwhile, time is getting short and he has no time or inclination to shop. He'll have to wear them a bit to break them in as he is going to walk the bride down the aisle and dance the first dance with her.

Anyone out there familiar with men's formal dress shoes and/or difficult sizes? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

My cat loves the double Zappos box and I want to send the shoes back if necessary before Sharkie gets attached to it.
