I have plans to make another tomorrow. Or tonight. I always think I’m going to do something on Sundays, but never do. Lol.

Thanks for the inspo! It took some fiddling to get the first and second ones done, but the learning curve is swift! Modified the ‘beak’ and made channels on the side for the laces rather than using elastics or sewing the ties in separately. Since I can’t smile at folks, I’m going to let colourful masks do the talking for me!

I’ll be sending half a dozen to my Mom who lives in a Big City. I need to draft a larger size for the menfolk. They’ve been going through my small quilting stash to pick the fabrics that speak to them. Lining is plain muslin. I’m using the plastic covered bendy thing that closes off the coffee bag for the nose part. It is removable and optional. I figure 45 minutes per mask.

#1,2,3 - completed (1 and 3 with wire)

#4/5 - needs channel for wire

#6 - in progress

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to Chris’ thread.

I used the Marfy pattern, but the advice and links in the thread helped with modifications that made the mask work better.

It looks great, and I so admire you for your grit to finish your creation! My sewing machine is still in storage - we are still in a temporary apartment so we are buying masks, but I am *itching* to figure it out like you did... but you're completely right that 80% of the work is emotional exhaustion! I am glad to not live in an era where I'd have to make all my household's clothing and bedding!

Yes to keeping the sewing machine up and running! I have skipped a few meltdowns by remembering that most instruction manuals are online now if you can find the model number

Thank you, Angie! If they tease me at work about Foo Dog of Death, I’m telling them I have stylist-approval, lol :)

I tell you all: I miss the old manual Singer sewing machine! You just put your foot on the pedal. The speed was so much easier to control IMO too. My machine ordeal: 1) It has so many stitches! It took me aeons to figure I last had it set to zigzag. No really. Then 2) the tension! Totally forgot about the bobbin tension! That was another trial for me yesterday when I realised... trying to find a jewellers screwdriver...

Re Plague Doctor masks: A) I’m feelin’ Pigeon on LaPed’s chart. It’s his shell-shocked ‘what’s happening???’ look B) It’s a weird thought, but de L’Orme, got to say the doctor had something with his terrifying design there. That beak made for the most breathable mask I’ve worn yet. It freaked me out tho, the look of it. Foo Dog of Death is easier on my psyche.

LOL rachy! I am totally on board with your mask for the ability to breathe thing. I feel like I’m being asphyxiated every time I go out in a mask. I am totally copying your design.

I am loath to drag out my sewing machine. Like you, I have to relearn everything each time I do. I end up confused and exhausted before I ever begin anything. And then I take a break for food. It’s a long process.

You look fabulous! Very professional looking job!

I will never let go of my beloved 50 year old Elna inherited from my mom. DH has occasionally asked me if I want a fancy new computerized sewing machine and I say heck no. Not just the sentimental value (it was my moms) but I can almost thread it with my eyes closed. That much muscle memory.

anyone pulling out a rarely used machine - google the model. There will be a million you tube videos on how to maintain. Clea it out - it is amazing where bits of thread and dust can gum it up. Oil it - find a video. Change to a fresh universal or woven needle. A blunt or imperceptibly bent needle (or using a ball point on wovens, or a woven needle on knits) causes a lot of the stitch problems.

remember - it doesn’t need to be pretty. Although rachy’s is.

I had my last project ready to go - had collected old denim that I was ready to repurpose, but it took FOREVER to set up the machine, load bobbins, find needles, figure out stitches... by the time I finished with the machine, I looked at the pile of old jeans and said, "screw it." :D

I don't see a death bird at all - I think your mask is great.
I am very impressed! It looks great. Stylish Surgeon, or Rogue Robber is what I see, Medieval Death Bird and Foo Dog work too!

Reading about your effort increases my reluctance to dust off my sewing machine! I haven’t used it since DS was in grade and he’s a 21-year old. Bobbins, feet, threading the machine properly, managing to sew in a straight line! I think I have my machines manual someplace. Doesn’t the machine need to be oiled also! LOL! YIKES!

I see no death bird ... I think this is rather pretty? Has social isolation addled my brain...?

Great mask! I would never have noticed the pointy-ness had you not mentioned it, but it looks fun and it looks fairly comfortable. I love the fabric, and your “foo-dog” crack made me giggle.

I’m sorry that you and so many other essential workers have to make your own, though. I hope it helps you stay safe. I don’t sew, so I’ve been doing the no-sew folded fabric with hair ties over the ears, which works fine for quick essential errands but not the greatest.

Rachylou, I used the same pattern and made a second one with a shorter ‘beak’. Of course I shortened it too much and found version two to be a bit smothering. Count me as not knowing of the medieval death bird either.

My social media is full of plague doctor content right now. I'm sure JAileen and other birders will appreciate these. I'm pretty partial to the puffin and the eider myself.
