That sounds quite reasonable to me but my 3 children suffer the empty leg syndrome. My grocery bill is not for the feint of heart

So seems pretty normal!! My co-workers must have been big meat workers.

Sara my kids are the empty leg sort! They don't eat much at lunch and sometimes afternoon tea but eat heaps of breakfast and tea (dinner) That same night they polished off a goodish amount of wholegrain pasta that they don't even like and they will go into the seconds and thirds with vegetables and into extra evening eating on some occasions. So I guess I do what you mentioned - limit the meat and fill them up on other stuff!

That sounds reasonable to me and is how much I would portion for five people. It's not like it was a steak or something. I think the US portion size of 4 oz per serving of meat is just about right for most people. I routinely make stir fries with 8 oz of meat and a load of veggies, served with rice, and it makes three generous portions. Nobody has ever told me it needs more meat.

I'd say a pound of ground meat for a family of 4 or 5 for Spaghetti Night is pretty standard. But some people are huge meat eaters.

I also think that it depends a lot on your activity level, your metabolism and how yummy the sauce was (sounds yummy!)

For me, I am a fairly light eater and 500g would last me about 4 to 5 meals.

There is only so much protein your body can absorb (with slight variances to account for age, height, and weight) and the rest is just discharged. Meat is only one source of protein, but can also be another source of important nutrients (like iron). So, a person doesn't need much more than the 'deck of cards' serving size at any given meal.

That said, meat can taste awfully good, and sometimes a larger portion might even be appropriate if you are trying to get in a higher number of calories.

I often eat a smaller portion of protein, but my 6ft 4in athletic sons eat A LOT of food, and their meat serving is proportionate to the servings of other foods-- carbs, fruit, and veg. We also mix up our sources of protein--chicken, pork, lamb, fish, cheese, legumes, eggs.

For what it's worth, I use a pound of ground beef when I make spaghetti sauce, but I use an equal amount by volume of finely chopped veg ( carrot, celery, onion) and this feeds 4 adults ( the boys are in their 20's) -- so, much like you and your family do. However, I've also seen youngest son eat a steak almost the size of his dinner plate...and don't get me started on what eldest eats after a triathlon!

Portions and preferences are quite subjective, but from my carnivore perspective, it doesn't sound like much for 5 people. However, take your childrens' ages into account, their appetites could be less when young. (My kids never went through an 'empty leg' stage, or were big eaters in general.)

Nowadays, we eat quite paleo and meat is a main part of our meals, so I plan toward 2-3 people per pound of meat, and hope there will be leftovers.

In my years of cooking, it seems like a traditional recipe approach has been 1/4 pound of meat per serving (4 oz. each person)

Some families I've known where the kids ARE big eaters and can eat them out of house & home, just prepare a limited, per person, amount of the entrée (the meat) and if the kids are still hungry, they know what they're allowed to fill up on (i.e. whole grain bread, etc.)

The other day I was talking in the lunch room about how my 3 children had eaten 500g, about a pound, of mince in bolognaise sauce the previous night, and how usually, that's how much I would serve for the whole family, as in DD and me as well.
My coworkers thought that wasn't very much for 5 people.

What do you think?
