Ah, perhaps I've been saved from a clothing disaster, so all's well! I'm 100% sure it looks way better on you, Medusa, than it would have on me :-)

Garmenta - good advice! I will have to try this!

Jenny, thanks for the sweet compliment. I'm sorry it was sold out, but maybe it's ok since that high waistband might have made it not work for you?

Jenny, I bought that dress and had to return it because it was cut too small in the bust. I don't think it would have worked on you at all, if that makes you feel better.

I think I would have to agree with Maya- that high banded waist might not be the most flattering for you. and even if you can stretch it over your bust and hips, is it going to lay right?

I've learned something useful from buying clothes on eBay, where sellers ignore size charts and measure the garments instead. Measure something that fits you really well from seam to seam on one side, at the bust, the waist, and the hip. Once you have that, you can use it as your "gold standard" for something else that will fit.

When you look at something online, you can call the retailer and ask them to take out their tape measure to give you the "seam to seam" measurement for the waist, hip or whatever--not the numbers given in the size chart.

It's a method that's better for ruling out than for fitting. For accurate fit, you really have to try it on. But this way you can avoid stuff that isn't going to work at all.

For what it's worth, the reason I didn't get that dress (it was posted a while ago) was because the waistband looked too high. I didn't think it would fit over the bust. Also it actually made the model look somewhat busty, so if *she* looked busty, I figured I would look positively sleazy. I ended up finding a woven dress that actually fit and had vertical seaming instead of horizontal.

ACK! my finger was on the submit button. Someone got there before I did. Grumble grumble grumble.

Really I prefer to go to shops and try things on, but even that isn't as simple as it seems. Le sigh.

Size charts never match my measurements. Actually I doubt they match 90% of the people who view them. Many of them seem outdated by about 20 years and completely dishonest.

According to Nordstrom, I am a size 8. That's a complete joke. Their sizes start at a 22" waist. How many women do you know that have a 22" waist? I know they exist, but they will probably all tell you that retailers sure as heck aren't stocking their size.

I don't know what the advantage of listing inaccurate size information could possibly be. It's like they WANT people to return their goods.

Anyway, the dress seems to be sold out sadly. But for future reference, I would just go with your usual size, or if there are reviews, see if a lot of people are finding them either small or large in certain areas. If in doubt, there is always the option of ordering both sizes and seeing which one fits better.

quickie sizing help needed:

None of my measurements match those on the sizing charts. I see the ponte knit black dress Medusa bought (http://www1.macys.com/catalog/.....?ID=394347), and it's on sale online and I'm coveting it, and I hope that won't upset you Medusa!, and one of the sizes they have left should fit me.

Medusa, it looks really good on you, so now I covet it even more! Don't worry, there is very little chance of us running into each other at the market ;-)

Since I can't try it on first, what do you think has a better shot at working?

(I don't worry about what they list for bust size on a knit. It will either stretch on over or it won't)

Size chart:
28.5 waist, 38 hip = size 8
29.5 waist, 39 hip = size 10

I'm 27 waist, 39 hip

I lean toward the size 8 so it will fit better at my waist and just have to stretch over my hips, but what do the collective you think? I have this problem all the while!

I was surprised to see that a 10 might suit me based on their chart. Nothing I own is a 10, but maybe this brand fits differently?
