I like it. I like how you styled it with boots and denim. You are tall and it doesn't overwhelm you. I like the shape of the sleeves on you too.

There will be other dresses, especially for you. This one wasn't fab enough for you and it did seem on the short side. You are right about finding one a little closer fitting. Your beautiful shape was hidden in this.

Sarah, I think you've pinpointed another thing that made me pause. It seemed too short to me, too -- almost neither here nor there, if you know what I mean. These are flat boots that I'm wearing in the photos, so the length you see here will only be exaggerated if this were to be worn with heels, which is how I would see styling an item like this.

I think if I were to go with another maxi, it would be closer fitting or less fabric on top, like the tropical vacation maxi I already own, to prevent that "swallowed by the dress" effect.

I do like casual maxi dresses, but I prefer them to sit longer at the hem.

Thanks for the honest input, ladies! I'm still glad I tried it on. I felt like I *could* work with it, but Rae hit the nail on the head -- it didn't really feel like me. I do have one maxi dress, but it's very "tropical island" feeling and I only wear it for specific occasions (most notably on vacation for dinners out) -- in those cases it makes me feel quite fab, but I don't think this would have felt that way for everyday. And this is just not the direction I like to go in when dressing up.

When I looked back at the pictures a little after I took them, I realized part of what was bugging me is that this silhouette looks very much like a flowy black culotte type jumpsuit (yes, really) that I wore in the early-mid 90s. I guess it was maybe? fashionable at the time, but the memory of it makes me cringe a little now. I certainly don't need to evoke a cringeworthy outfit!

Have you ever had that happen?

Ah, I see you've passed it up. I think it's a good call... it did seem a bit formal to me and didn't exactly say "Janet" to me.

Going to have to say nay Janet. Not rockery enough for you, even with it being black and if you were to add additional rocker elements. It will be hard to "toughen up", and I can just see any shorter length working so much better for you.

Love long black skirts - before kids I wore this look more often. Quite dramatic looking - but CAN be somewhat dressed down too. It definitely gives off a more 'dressy' and arty vibe, no matter what you pair it with, I think. Jersey material helps in making it comfy, but I wouldn't say the look is ever really casual. You may end up getting a LOT of wear from this skirt, judging from my past experience.

I like it.

I wouldn't wear a necklace with it. It seems to call for espadrilles and hot weather - no jacket.

I hear ya. You all are making very good points. It's a very casual material, quite tee shirt feeling. It's a bit of a wild card and definitely out of my comfort zone, I'm not sold either.

I think that's a lot of black material all at once . . . I personally prefer printed or otherwise 'lightness' to a maxi dress if that makes sense.

I do like it with the denim jacket, but being black and long and the full sleeves makes it seem more evening-ey by itself. How do you see yourself wearing it?
