For example a red pencil looks garish by itself, but it I use another shade over it then it becomes rich and layered. I've used brown shades to get an earthy red, coppery tones because they suit my coloring, pinks, fuchsia, coral. Only then will you be able to fix it! I had the same problem for years, nothing was ever the color it seemed, and I was a serial bad lipstick buyer.
