Thanks for sharing your strategies!
LisaP, Angie, StyleFan, jAileen, Carla, Suz, MaineLady: I don't mind at all hearing about your take on outerwear. I get it (your arguments for buying several coats) and will admire a 'full' outfit on others... but for me, simplicity is more important than matching everything in this case. Since my coats are almost only used for commuting, I don't mind wearing the same two (waterproof and prettier non-waterproof) for an entire season (counting 4 seasons). Even then, a coat I like will be used for years and I won't tire of it. Because my wardrobe is heavy on neutrals I rarely feel my coat is truly mismatched to my bottom choice. And it frees up my mind in the rush of the morning to just choose between 2-3 coats. I get enough fun out of picking 'indoor' outfits with more care the night before.
That being said, I AM drawn to the idea of creating a little outerwear capsule.
Nemosmom, it makes sense to use my 'happy colors' for such a capsule.
Anchie, good idea to look for a patterned item to tie things together. I am considering a patterned coat even...
Sal, your aporoach sounds like how I'm currently doing it.
Rachylou, I've been wondering should I take this approach to prevent accumulating mismatching pieces.
Robin, funny how our tolerance for mismatching is different from item to item!
Jane, your approach is similar to mine. I also try to go for all silver hardware (except maybe for casual wear, when bronze is so much more common).
AJ: I've never heard of wearing one's bag under the coat! Mine would for sure be too large for that :). I'm the opposite with matching bags: indoors I quickly put my bag down so I'm less picky about bag matching outfit.

Except for one eggplant purple trench and a true red trench, all my outerwear are black, grey, or navy. I buy colorful gloves and scarves to add some zing to the neutrals. I don't give much thought to whether my purse matches because if I am going to be outside for awhile, I will wear a small crossbody purse inside the coat/jacket. Otherwise, the jacket comes off quickly once indoors, so purse needs to match outfit more than the outerwear.

I have a lot of outerwear and echo many of Lisa P’s and Angie’s comments. My accessories match, or coordinate, because having a pulled together look makes me happy. I need lots of cozy hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and boots to make it through the cold weather months. I choose form and function.

I like to have it relatively coordinated; I only have gold hardware for example - buttons on costs and blazers, zips on bags; I have a navy winter formal coat for work which is super and I’d like a camel one this year. I don’t mind mixing black and navy though. If I can find the right one. For weekends I’m slightly less picky but it still is in my thoughts!

What Lisa P, Angie, JAileen, and Carla say -- I don't have as many coats as Angie or LisaP but I am starting to get up there!!! And I'm also collecting scarves, hats, gloves and bags to work with them all! I LOVE a coordinated look and want it to work for my varied activities, from "gearish" walking clothes to going-to-town and dressy, and also for all temperatures and dresses vs. pants!

The dark coats here are mostly blue. The trenches are black. I need a lighter one.

Like Lisap, Angie, JAileen - only on a reduced scale (4 winter coats, 4 spring/fall coats). Colours are black, red, and beige/golden brown. I have accessories in black, red, cobalt, and grey - including hats, gloves, and bags with scarves that combine all these colours.

I’m hoping to add another cloth coat - in either olive or camel.

I have outerwear for autumn, spring, early winter and deep winter. I am probably in need of a coat or two for really cold deep winter days. I think along the same lines as Lisap and Angie. I have hats, mittens/gloves, scarves, boots and bags for my coats. I do find that good quality coats last a long time and are worth the investment. My pea coat is 15 or 16 years old.

I like to have scarves and gloves to match my coats but don't worry about bags. I mostly stick with neutrals anyway. I must say that I don't like it if my snow boots clash with my coats so that can be a problem.

This year I didn’t need my gloves at all due to climate change.

I have the lifestyle and climate for a LOT of jackets and coats....... and HAVE a lot of jackets and coats! It's a WHOLE look for me, and I like it to vary. Scarves, footwear and bags must match extremely well.

Current outerwear capsule - the dark is BLUE, not black. Not including blazers, denim jackets, and Summer jackets.

Wardrobe holes: light blue, turquoise, and pale pink coats

I don’t necessarily match coats to bags, hats and scarves exactly but they must work together. Usually scarf has the colors of coat, bag and hat in the pattern.

You're going to be sorry I answered I have a ton of coats and jackets, and absolutely pick specific textures and colours to work with my clothes. I can't even conceive of having only one coat - in my climate you need one for more than half the year, and wearing the same coat daily would be like wearing the same sweater every day for 6 months. I just don't get it. Anyways, that isn't the issue, I realize.

I make little capsules that include the coat, a couple of scarves, gloves/mitts, maybe a hat, and definitely make sure I have bags to work with them. It's a whole look for me. The outerwear capsules are created to work with my work and casual clothes and I definitely keep what bags I own in mind when picking a new coat/jacket. Must all work together and be statement-ish.

Interesting question! The only outer bag I carry in the winter is my laptop bag (unless it's a special occasion clutch, which is rare).

I haven't intentionally purchased my outerwear pieces to match my accessories, but I do tend to buy colors simply because they make me happy - so there may be repeat colors across categories. My scarves may have a repeat color as the coat, but I haven't purchased anything as a set before.

Do you guys purposefully buy matching outerwear? I'm considering a new coat this year, and a new everyday bag, and it makes sense to try to match the colors (especially since I'm in the mood for a statement coat, after years of grey!). Then again, it might spur on the need for matching hat and scarf. If that's what I want, I better start saving or even postpone the whole thing another year. What is your strategy here? Neutrals? Color capsules? Buy everything together, maybe even from one store? I'm curious!
