I'm blonde and wear taupe or camel shoes - close enough to my hair - with bootcut jeans and trousers. This works and doesn't shorten the legline significantly as long as the pants are the proper length. I have super short legs so wear dark shoes with dark skinny or straightleg pants.

On me, I think it looks weird if tights match the skirt instead of the footwear. Eg black skirt, black tights, cognac boots looks weird to me. I think this might be a matter of proportion though - it looks good to my eye on some people.

As a brunette, I'll bookend my hair with black or dark brow, or even charcoal grey. Other posters are right in thinking that it's a similarity of depth, not exact color, that makes it work.

That said, sometimes I choose nude or taupe shoes to lengthen my legline, even when wearing black, and occasionally I wear nude/taupe with darker clothing to lighten the look --- scrunching sleeves, too. When I do this, I find I'm bookending my skin.

I'd encourage you to snap some pics of outfits using bookending. Even if you only view them yourself, it might be helpful. Also, check out how Angie does it in her outfit posts --- and observe how she sometimes chooses dark footwear, too.

Grey hair here, and low contrast neutral coloring (neither distinctively warm or cool). I second Suz, it's the lightness that matters for light colored hair, not the exact color match. Taupe works to bookend my hair, and cream, and most shades of grey. I've also found success with cognac booties and tall boots worn with black or charcoal bottoms. As long as I pull the cognac up near my face with an amber necklace for example, or scarf with black/grey and cognac among the mix, the lighter color of the footwear serves to balance if not exactly bookend. With skirts, I wear my cognac tall boots, any color booties with bare legs, or black tights with black booties. In which case I make sure to pull the black up top.

I am lucky to have about 5 different hair shades on my head from dark brown to light blonde. But if your shoe is light and your leggings are dark, mightn't you be at risk of shortening your leg line? Not that that is necessarily the most important thing.

Great question! I struggle with this regularly as my hair is lightish. I look forward to the hearing the answers, too.

I had light colored oxfords (unfortunately done in now) to bookend my hair and I loved to wear them with black pants or skirts and dark colored hose. I always matched the hose to the skirt instead of the shoes and it always looked great because my hair was visually balancing the shoes anyway. Mine didn't match my hair color exactly, but they were close enough. I'd love to have a pair of dressy boots that bookend my hair...

It depends! I find this tricky, too, as someone with light hair. Angie finesses it brilliantly -- she often wears white or cream or silver footwear which does not exactly "match" her hair but still effectively bridges or creates coherence in her outfits and introduces a lighter element, which gives her outfits vibrancy and animation.

If you wear dark pants with lighter footwear, it will tend to shorten the legline. To deal with that, a heel can help. If you have long legs it might not matter as much.

I find it much trickier with skirts and dresses, especially in winter. In the summer, it's easy -- just go without hose! A light taupe shoe is almost a nude for me and it works. But in winter...nude hose is one option, but sheer nude hose don't keep me warm in my cold climate.

I don't think it's necessary to match your hair exactly. For me, light taupe, very light brown or tan, gold, even some yellows can work. But I can also use grey, silver, white or a pattern (snakeskin or leopard print).

Lastly -- you can use other accessories or clothing instead to echo the hair. For example, a belt, or a skirt or pants -- or a bag.

I love the concept but does it look good if you are wearing dark pants and your shoe or boot is light? What if you are wearing a skirt and tights, should your tights be light like your shoe? Last question, would a camel or taupe be fine or should the tone of the shoe match your hair?
