I really think it depends on your style and your personality. Matching jewelry sometimes put a polishing touch on the outfit. Personally, I have moments where I match and other moments where I don't.

some match (pearl studs with a pearl necklace) some don't (plain gold hoops with a bling-y-er necklace). I never buy a matching set - never did - but I guess I never really thought about it. I don't wear really outrageous pieces - but I do always try to match metals in the jewelry.

Zombie thread! I don't mind old threads being revisited, in fact it's fun to see what I was asking about when I just joined YLF. However, I wish the resurrecting wasn't just done by people wanting to sell things on their website. :(

How funny that when I first joined, I was worried about looking too matchy matchy, but now it's an integral part of my style and even a part of my rubric! However, I rarely wear matching earring/necklace sets. I'm more likely to do matchy matdhy necklace to bracelet to skirt to purse type of hypermatchy. Something more over the top intentional. Matching earring and necklace sets are way too classic and tame for me, LOL....

I love to match. But I don't want to look like I matched things because Its easier! First, I always match colors of metal, except that my wedding and engagement rings are yellow gold, and are worn daily. I have pearls and pearl earrings, diamond pendant and earrings, a garnet pendant and earrings. All of shich i wear as a set.Usually, if I wear white metals, I wear my diamond studs, even if I don't wear the pendant. I have three go to necklaces: a sterling monogrammed pendant, a yellow gold monogrammed pendant, and a short strand of chunky freshwater pearls. I wear the diamonds with the silver and the pearls, and either gold knots or colored gemstone studs with the gold necklace. And I match the gemstone studs to the color of my outfit!

I occasionally wear matching, but mostly like to pull out the predominant metal color of the necklace. I don't like matching too much of the time and actually cringe the few times I've done it..

There are a few rules I follow-with a statement necklace and you have pierced ears-wear small earrings, gold, silver, brass, bronze, shiny silver or whatever metal is the base of the statement piece. like if there is a chain, the metal of the clasp, etc. If you wear long dangly earrings, either no necklace, or something long, like a long chain with pendant. With a statement necklace it looks best to wear something that fills in the neckline -like v neck or a rounded scoup neckline. If you want to showcase a vintage piece, or a unique piece, then do not wear anything like earring to detract from it. wear small hoops, studs, or such.

sometimes matchy looks great, but not in the sense of something purchased as a set. One matchy I do is a sort of set I made. Fresh water pearl earrings -just 1 pearl on a dangly 1 inch chain, with a long string of fresh water pearls, with abalone shell, and wire wrap with pearl. get loads of compliments on it. This combo is worn with things like black, navy, or other plain dark tops.

How funny to resurrect and reconsider! I would do matching if I worked in the hotel business - and then strictly minimalist small button earrings, rings, and single bangle thin bracelets for after work.

I am all about minimalistic, however you may be the type of person that suits a lot of jewelry. I simply look rather weird, so for me I would recommend optinf for one or another. I suppose it depends where you are going as if it is somewhere grand and the jewellery is filled with diamonds, and you want to impress then go for both

I rarely wear both earrings and necklace. I like for one or the other to make a statement, and if I'm wearing both, they compete with eachother.

I think some people can pull it off, and on some it looks too contrived and fussy. Just depends....

I'm interested to hear that some of you deliberately match earrings and necklace when you're wearing pearls. The only earrings I wear are pearl studs or silver hoops, but I almost always remove earrings when I'm wearing pearls at the neck because I think the matched combination looks too fussy.

That could be because my style is more classic, and therefore I need to worry more about things going grandma.

I don't think it's as big a deal when the items are small scale, like diamond studs with a tiny diamond pendant. I think it's another story when you are getting into large scale costume jewelry with very noticeable earrings, necklace and bracelets. In that case, I would probably wear only one statement piece, and keep the others simple and coordinating but not matching. Usually I do a pearl necklace with diamond studs, or a statement necklace or statement earrings but not all together at one time.

Like Aida, I occasionally join team matchy matchy when it comes to shoes, belt, and handbag colors but I am not overly concerned about having to match everything in every outfit.

I'm starting to think some of these rules about matching being outdated are more to the tune of not having fashion flair or know how about how to coordinate, and that it's an easy fail safe to just match. Therefore those 'in the know' know when to *choose* whether to match or not. Maybe it's just my interpretation? But I do have both a silver and pearl matching set that I will sometimes wear together if the mood strikes me. Very small scale and dainty so I'm not sure anyone even notices unless they're right up next to me, lol.

I like to coordinate, but not necessarily match, unless it's classic pearls!

I usually wear a sterling pendant. I design my bracelets (either bangles or wire-wrapped) and earrings using natural mineral stone beads, crafting them purposely asymmetrical, using different sizes and shapes to make them unique and interesting.

I love how Taylor put it - I think that it's great to have options and knowing that you don't NEED to match is very liberating, but I match a pearl earring with a pearl necklace fairly frequently. I think the key is to play around with different pairings and and decide what works for you and whatever you happen to be wearing. For example, if an outfit is a little "funky" for me, a classic matching necklace and earring might make ME feel more comfortable. Or, OTOH, if my outfit is feeling a bit too boring, I'd switch it up a bit and make sure my accessories aren't "matchy matchy". I will often buy jewelry in sets - sometimes I wear them together and sometimes I don't! That's the fun part of experimenting. It's also, BTW, the reason I was really late to work this morning....too much experimenting! LOL!

I don't buy into any particular rule. :)
I like pearl earrings with a pearl necklace..silver with silver and gold with gold.

It is ok to mix it up a bit too.. But, .I don't think it looks old fashioned, I think it looks classic, and lady like:) If the rest of your outfit is current .

I also like to match my shoes and purse...I don't feel dated or old..again classic and tailored. Some are comfortable in mixing many colors and styles together and some are not...do what feels right for you:)

Yes, it's one of those "new" rules about things that can date you. Like always matching your purse and shoes. That's not to say you can't ever match, but buying matched sets is no longer neccessary.

You could wear a pearl necklace with diamond/CZ studs, for instance. As long as they "go", they don't need to match.

Well, for myself and my style, I find the matching sets can feel old fashioned, and especially so when they are distinctive looking; I don't usually mind pearl earrings+pearl necklace, but I do prefer a difference in size/color with that one. The link Carole posted has some great examples of sets that are similar in tone/style but don't match exactly.

I wear earrings daily, usually 2 pair: diamond studs that I rarely change out, and large silver hoops 80% of the time/other fun earrings 20% of the time; I wear necklaces/scarves maybe half the time. I have no problem pairing earrings with necklaces/scarves, but I do adjust the size of my earrings depending on what's going on at my neckline. Since I don't like my earrings/necklaces to look like they came from a set, when I'm not wearing the hoops I either mix the metals or pick something that has a similar metal but different style.

Examples: Necklace with lots of hammered metal bits paired with classic pearl studs. Necklace with oiled bronze chains and colored natural stones paired with silver dangly earrings. Gold chain with gold charm paired with bronze pyramid stud earrings. Silver charm pendant paired with chunky turquoise droplet earrings. Silver hoops with any and everything :)

EDIT: I do like to match my shoes and purse. I think it's really a matter of selecting when you want to match.

I think matching jewelry is ok but better yet to mix it up. Check out this link for a good reference....

http://www.insideoutstyleblog......-sets.html

I will add that I usually will wear earrings or a necklace not both. Too much bling is not my thing.

Hi all, just wondering if you wear matching earrings and necklaces or not. Alda mentioned in my other thread that it was a little too matchy-matchy. I always thought you were supposed to wear them together since they usually come in sets, but maybe I am behind the times? Do you like to wear matched sets? If you don't, what kind of earrings do you wear with your necklaces? Or do you only wear earrings or a necklace, but not both at the same time? Thanks!
