So interesting, Rute - thank you for chiming in. And I love the lesson on corporate connections - thank you, Irene!

Celia, we NEED to have coffee. We need to have a Toronto meetup, actually. I am in TO usually on the run, either there for work (as this weekend) or on visits to my mother. So I rarely have any moments for any kind of socializing. I would like to make the time to do it, though, and see your gorgeous face in person!

Massimo Dutti is one of INDITEX's posher brands (INDITEX owns indeed ZARA, together with other brands like Oysho, Stradivarius, Bershka, Uterqüe or Pull & Bear -yeah, big group).

I believe it is a store targeted at a middle-aged stylish woman -Euro-style- with fine finances (middle class). I believe Zara is a bit more fashion-forward or trendy, and a bit cheaper, although Zara Woman is becoming more expensive by the minute (bear in mind that Zara started out as a really, really, really cheap store). The other three clothing brands focus on the younger spectrum, while Oysho sells lingerie, also for the younger crowd.

If you like Massimo, I would try check if you have any Uterqüe near you. They sell accessories (bags and shoes) but I think they are pretty good quality (better than Zara, and a tad more expensive).

A less expensive version of Max Mara sounds right up my alley! And I've looked at MD's website and loved their clothes so much I've bookmarked it as my aspirational style. So far the only US stores are in New York and Washington D.C., so it will probably be a year at least before there's a store in California.

Interesting special report.
I used to love Massimo Dutti back in Portugal, their fall blazers and coats were especially nice and their basics(like layering tops) are of very good quality.

The one time I visited the store on Eaton , which was on fall I thought they were playing a little bit safe because they tend to be a little more boho, but I guess Euro Chic is the perfect name for it.

They do run small because they are actually owned by the same company as Zara .

Maybe this winter I will rekindle my relationship with M.D.

Yes! Thanks for elaborating on the tall vs shorter thing, Suz, I completely agree with your assessment.

Joy: I had a feeling you would:-)

Karie: LOL:-)

Sveta: I'm right there with you re: sizing. Bottoms might be difficult, lengthwise too: all the MD trousers I tried on this season were too short. But I'm pretty sure a good number of their tops would fit you.

Sveta, I didn't know we had a Massimo Dutti, either. And then as I was walking past Ann Taylor I had a dim realization that I had seen it last time I was there and maybe even the time before that, too - but it hadn't "computed" somehow. And from the outside, the store looks a bit forbidding somehow. It's a bit Ralph Lauren-ish (hmmm...the clothes are sort of European RL, too, in a way, at least this summer collection) -- anyway, there's a lot of wood, it looks a bit conservative and expensive....and something in the window display probably made me rule it out as too pricey for me -- before I even went in!

It looks as if Canadians can't order online, though. Unless I am doing something wrong.

Also, I wouldn't say that the clothes will only work for someone taller. On the contrary! I think many would look good on someone tall or short. There were just a few tops where I felt, by looking at them, that they wouldn't work all that well for me, personally, in part because of my height (and at other times because of the neckline or something.)

Suz, thanks for the report!I did not know we have this store in Canada! I visited it in Porto Portugal this spring for the first time and was pleasantly surprised as well. I did not buy anything but was really tempted.
Hmmm, this sounds like my kind of store - caters to taller gals! A lot of lilac! The only drawback is a need to size up - as my size is already on the top side of the range it is not possible to size up very often :-(
I need to plan a trip to Toronto...

So fun to read your thoughts on MD, Suz. I agree about the store set-up and arrangement of the clothes, it's always calming to walk into one of their shops. And yes, this season it definitely is "my store", they got the colours exactly right:-) I hadn't thought of the Max Mara connection before, but that's a good point: they both often have the same simple styles with strong lines going on. Massimo Dutti does classic styles very well, I think, the colour palette does change from season to season, and if I remember correctly they went quite boho last Summer.

Sorry to hear that the styles aren't really working for a shorter lass. I can also add that their clothes tend to run small, as with Zara and Mango I need to size up.

(Joy, I think you would like their stuff too).

I had a few minutes in the Eaton Centre this morning en route to an appointment, and I did some scouting at Massimo Dutti. I had never been in before, but I know Inge has linked to them and recently we discovered that they do online in N. America. (Not sure about Canada, as I have not checked).

Inge, this is your store! No wonder you've been buying from them.

The clothes are nicely presented, lovely quality for the price point, and quietly elegant. It felt like a less expensive version of Max Mara. Does that make any sense? Modern Euro classic. With lots of lilac! (One of Inge's best colours). This particular summer collection has a very slight boho tinge to it (with paisleys and some linens and other slub fabrics). And there were some nautical touches as well. But overall it was classic with a bit of femininity.

I didn't have time to try anything on. But in some cases I could tell that the clothes would probably work better for someone taller than I am. It had to do with pattern placement and other less easy to identify intuitions.

But I'd certainly be interested in shopping there in future.
