Kids will not wear anything over the ears. My 2 year old granddaughter is supposed to wear a mask to preschool . That will be a huge battle. My ex in-laws have gotten the corona virus probably from grandchildren who do not have the usual symptoms. One is sick but at home. The other is not doing well and had to be air lifted to a bigger city hospital but still not improved but from a rural area with few cases of the virus. DSIL is in a nursing home and confused and isolated. Several in her unit have died of the virus recently. She is in quarantine and can not leave her room or have visitors. Very hard on someone who is confused about the whole thing. Her next door neighbor has the virus and keeps getting up and going out.
We try to call often but cannot visit her. This is extra hard for the elderly confused to understand. She thinks she is sick because no one enters who is not wearing disposable garments and multiple face coverings.

Ha! Turned out it was all in vain. School is going all virtual so no need for masks

Suntiger, if your father wears hearing aides or glasses. Do not get him anything that goes over the ears. It will not work, Runcarla made some with ties for my husband. He wears the every day.

Etsy has many options for childrens masks! Hundreds of thousands probably.
I told my dad I'd send him some, and was describing different options. He kept changing his mind. Eventually he just said "get me whatever you think I'd like."

My little grandchildren like a soft jersey gator mask best. Maybe U-Tube has some ideas as to how to make them with sock or so thing tubular like a tee shirt sleeve. I’m not sure how to add a pocket. Something that uses a stretchy head band is another idea and may be cooler.

Laura, Do you mean the disposable surgical masks. We have a small stash of them from before the pandemic but haven’t found anything of a similar quality.

That’s good to know about jersey. I hadn’t thought about it being hard to breathe through.

Honestly maybe the disposable ones would be a good option, at least then you wouldn't feel bad when he lost one or got it dirty.

I've made the craft passion one - you'd have to try the kids size to see if it would work because kids' face sizes vary so much even at the same age.

Jersey lining would be soft, but it's also very tightly-woven and hard to breathe through. I just got a purchased jersey mask and I don't think I'm going to be able to use it this summer in the humidity because it makes me not get enough air.

Thanks all, I look through these and see what I can tackle. I have a found a seamstress in town, so I could potentially have her sew for me if I can give her a pattern and materials.

Rachy, you raise several good point. Eshakti makes some with a retainer strap. For kids, it would have to to made with those break-way straps. Perhaps, a copper-based fabric on the outside to keep contamination issues to a minimum although data on that is limited.

I don’t have any children to sew for anymore! But I have thought about it, since masks are my obsession, lol. My first thought is kids are gonna lose them like mad. I think the ear loops would be easiest for them to put on, but a single string means it can hang from their neck at lunch. I still feel a shaped mask with the head tie provides better fit against the face and better for all day wear.

Because kids lose things... I think, whatever the pattern, sew it like the Marfy: cut two pieces instead of four. Streamline the process.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking of making the Jesse Killion pattern, linked on this page, for my kids. There are 24 sizes, for narrow/average/wide faces, and based on the length from bridge of nose to just under the chin. The videos on the page (I think the third one) show how to measure to choose the right size.

http://www.fabricpatch.net/fac.....relief.htm

There is a link to the youth version of the mask pattern I've been wearing on this page (from my favorite local yarn/fabric store!) here. https://gatherhereonline.com/b.....bout-masks

I haven't made or (obviously) worn the children's version but the adult version is very comfortable! It's a very simple pattern and I think very easy to modify the size (you would just cut a smaller piece of fabric to start). I prefer over the ear elastic rather than the one that goes behind the head.

Following! I tried to modify the forum favorite "marfy" pattern and I can't get it quite right. I ended up buying a couple from an etsy shop, but they are way too big for my 5yo.

After much back-and-forth, we have decided in favor of in-person schooling for my son in the fall. He will need to wear a mask everyday and carry multiples with him.

Have you found a kid-sized mask pattern that you like? Ideally i would like a pattern with a pocket. I am considering melt-blown fabric piece in the pocket and and a soft jersey lining.
