You know, this is one area where I plan to not follow the YLF line and go with what Melissa said, ie wearing socks with MJs under pants. It is a very common MOTG where I live and I think it looks fine!

The part of YLF that I have the most trouble keeping up with is shoes. While I have bought some lovely YLF approved shoes and sandals, I still tend much of the time to go with my rather boring orthotic shoes, which are super comfortable.

I like Kumfs (which I see are actually avail in the USA now, on Zappos) and will need to replace my everyday pair next winter, and am thinking of getting something like this
http://www.kumfs.co.nz/product.....pr=Casuals
http://www.kumfs.co.nz/product.....pr=Casuals
or http://www.kumfs.co.nz/product.....8;pr=Dress

The last time I bought Kumfs Mary Janes they were comfortable enough to wear without socks, but for our winter (and even some summer evening) wearing no socks isn't a comfortable option. (I have a theory that your need to have warm ankles to be warm in general!)

Thanks so much for your input and all those photos, Melissa..
Even though I would only be wearing them with jeans I feel I best be safe and return them until I find a pair I could wear either way. I spend way too much of my budget on shoes, mostly of this type, because they are comfortable, but how many Mary Janes do you need, right? It seems the loafters I try have seams at the wrong spot and rub on my bunion and I can tell right away I can't wear them...The search goes on....

Oh, Carole. I’m sorry to hear about your foot problems. I was with a client today who has bad bunions and WW shoes are still too narrow for her. It’s very, VERY hard to find her closed shoes.

These types of shoes don’t work with socks I'm afraid. Have you tried loafers?

Carole,

I am new, too, so my advice should be taken with a liberal grain of salt. :)

That said, I am such a huge fan of mary janes that I'd hate to see you take them back without thinking whether or not you can wear the kind of socks you want to with them.

So, here is a photo tour through how I do and don't wear socks with my vast collection of mary janes:

-To my eye, the only really bad sock option with mjs are socks that hit anywhere in the ankle up to mid-calf area. It just looks wrong to me:

http://picasaweb.google.com/ms.....0119545186

But, if you're wearing pants that will cover most of your socks up, you can wear whatever socks you want:

http://picasaweb.google.com/ms.....5481129986

Even though I haven't chosen the best hose/mj combo here, I do think you can wear tights and hose with mjs:

http://picasaweb.google.com/ms.....9317137154

I wear my mjs all the time with footie socks. They keep me comfy, and almost no one sees them:

http://picasaweb.google.com/ms.....2213159554

And lastly, I think that with the right combination of hemline/length and sock height, that trouser socks can sometimes be rocked with mary janes, but I'm not totally confident about this look:

http://picasaweb.google.com/ms.....7570266450

That was probably a more detailed answer than you were looking for, but I obviously love mary janes a lot. Good luck deciding whether or not to keep yours!

Melissa- Thanks for your input...I read here somewhere that you shouldn't wear this type of shoe with socks, but the pair I bought are suede and didn't think they looked right without socks, so maybe I should just take them back. I needed something with a low heel and have a really hard time with shoes, have a bad bunion that causes me lots of pain....keep putting of surgery..

Oh, those are very cute! I have a similar pair of Merrell mary janes, and for what it's worth I generally either wear them with hose/tights or with those footie socks that hide inside your shoes. Personally, I think they look funny with socks, unless you're wearing pants that cover up the socks.
