I love these outfits, all- Sal, you mix old&new with such a panache- wow! The trench is indeed the weakest link in the chain(we all have them in our wardrobe- and it happend to me this spring with exactly the same item....a trench!:-)). As you said it can be a bit too stiff, too short and having not the most flattering collar- but it's still doing the job of a trench. It's really an art AND science (!) to find the right item for our needs -and we can never rest-as life and wardrobe are always changing!:-)

Love these wrap-ups, Sal, and I really enjoy seeing a grouping of your outfits all together. My favorites here are from Photo #4. You rock a printed skirt. The white pants outfits are great, too. I'm loving the higher rise + shorter top look in my own style right now, too, but there's a fine line, isn't there? I suppose the next trend will be for waistlines to start migrating down and then we'll be in an exposed-midriff influencer phase for a while.

I think the trench might be too short for you? I associate you with longer, more elegant lines, so maybe something similar but a bit longer and with a bit of an A-line flare might work better.

Thanks Shevia, Liesbeth and Notsaf.

Style is a strange beast isn’t it? Is it an art or a science - I think it is both actually. And someone else with my body and colouring might suit this trench. But it doesn’t suit me.

I love you in that first jacket - I do believe I say that every time you wear it. I have to remind myself that I am not you to avoid trying to seek it out. White jeans look great with rust top, but I hear you with the bagging out and riding up. No go!
Trench seems blah on you, relatively speaking. Outfit with socks looks good to me - socks aren't really that noticeable in the picture though.
Overall great looks!

Socks notwithstanding, I really like the outfit in #2. The socks look like they are a colour match for the pattern in your top. I like the idea of more sock to scrunch, but just the white sneakers would work. I also really like the colour story going on with the trench coat. Maybe double breasted with a belt/tie waist would be a better match for your style?

Clothes (especially pants) that ‘grow’ with body heat are at the top of my ‘pet peeves’ list, along with sweaters that pill.

The green skirt outfit, the first jeans and jacket, and the black blouse/pants were my favourites. It is mostly still warm here so I am struggling to wear my wintery clothes at the moment.

Thank you Sally. I love the first GStar Raw Jeans, my current favourites.

Bijou - I will give it a go. I think the floral will work with my white sneakers and I could see the navy with boots. The pink sweater would work on you too!! I am a week or two away from merino tops here - it is still just a bit too warm.

Thanks Star. I think Angie is right and I will donate this jacket. I want to love it but someone else will love it more as it is a lovely quality jacket.

Thanks Brooklyn - I know what you mean about the socks, I will experiment further. I do remember the challenge too. I was unaware of Cable but a local boutique stocked a few of their sweaters and I fell in love with the warm pink. My other merino sweaters are very plain so a statement felt right.

I know exactly what you mean Janet - the Bailey did wonders for the shape - but very body con. I have worn mine with a blazer that works, but more recently I have not been choosing it. I am thinking that I will look for some white wide leg pants next summer rather than jeans. Although I could be tempted by cream or ecru jeans. If I look in the photos I am sure I look the widest when I wear the white jeans and the white trousers.

Thanks Smittie - that was my favourite skirt outfit too. I hope to get one more wear of it before it gets too cold!! And the jacket is going - I could see it on someone else who could look gamine or preppy in it, it just doesn't work with my lines does it.

Helena - getting there! YLF has helped me to see what I like - and feel less tempted to try and copy others style (ironically). I have worked out what I like - and whilst not every outfit is 10/10 I feel comfortable.

Thanks Rachy - good luck with the copcatting!!

Irina - thank you. The white jeans are feeling a bit short and have stretched out a bit. The white pants mostly work although I should do an outfit lab to find two or three combinations as they are tricky for me to style. And the trench is off today!

Thanks Sisi. I love the two floral skirts too. They make me happy!!

Zaeobi - thanks. Yes I will post a look with the pink sweater, it is still a bit too warm for it. And the rust top has been brilliant. I like with my other jeans, but not these white pants. I almost wanted to duplicate in black but did hold off.

Thanks Robin. Yes I feel okay in them but I do feel that they are not that flattering...which I am trying to get over as a concept....I will ponder it and I rarely wear them in winter anyway as they are cropped and I get a bit cold!

Cardiff Girl - thanks. The trench was thrifted for $20 and stunning quality...but I think it fights with my lines. I can see that. I need a bit more movement and less "boxiness" .

Thanks Angie - you are right - and off the coat goes! I am thinking of some white sailor style pants next spring (if I can find them). I would also quite like ecru jeans.....

The red top looks particularly good with the skirt because of the shorter length. I like the first outfit and the skirt looks best, but you wear it all beautifully :)

I agree with the items in your holding zone. Good call.

I like the white jeans! Hang on a little longer.

Oh Sally, the skirts (or dresses?) look fabulous. I love your tops that you’re leaving loose. They are flattering on you.

The coat is great BUT it doesn’t look like it’s your style. I would suggest a regular trench coat with lapels, or a more casual mac with a hood, like the boden ones.

Those striped Bailey dresses were the bomb, weren’t they? I kind of miss mine, but it was something that felt great when my body was very different from how it is now. The last time I wore it, it was hiking up when I walked, and I felt so self-conscious in it that I kept my long topper on over it all evening. I thanked it for years of service and let it go.

You look great in all of these, and I am partial to the solid top with patterned skirt outfits — that’s one of my go-to summer tactics!

I like the look of white jeans with a loose fit, but your experience is a good example of why I have largely given up on white jeans. They’re so unforgiving and it’s hard to get all the details right. I tried on a pair yesterday and they were actually flattering on me, but the fabric was just thin enough that I could see that I had dark underwear on underneath — eek! Can you have the waist taken in on your white jeans to help keep them from sliding down?

Fabulous as usual Sally. My faves are 1/1, 3/1, 4/1 and 4/2.

Re: the Bailey. I know how you feel. I just parted with the green Bailey dress that I wore in our All Blacks vs Green and Gold challenge. Remember that? I lost. I haven’t worn it for a long time.

Re: the socks. I like the colour but I think I’d like the look better if they were more scrunched down, so that they just peek out. Then the gap between pants and socks would be bigger. Something about the proportions and the number of horizontal lines you’ve got going there. But what do I know! It’s good to play around with these things.

Thanks for bringing Cable to my attention. I don’t know them so I had a look. Nice.

Cool outfits Sal! Particularly love #1 in pic 1, those jeans fit so good, and the first skirt outfit. Trench looks good. I have a short, red trench I am iffy about and don't know exactly why.

Sal all your outfits are fabulous and I love the new wardrobe additions. I am coveting you new pink jumper!

With the amazing new dresses, have you tried dressing them down with casual footwear and toppers? I find my boots and denim/leather jackets great to dress down some of my more formal dresses, so that I can wear them to lunch with girlfriends or family catch ups. I hope you have a special occasion to wear the new dresses, but with life becoming increasingly casual, juxtaposing formal with informal is how I get more wear from wardrobe favourites.

I really like your jeans outfits. Those light blue ones are a great fit and they work well with the jacket in the first picture. I think the white jeans look fine but I know what you mean if you buy them less than tight and they stretch, they can end up feeling too loose. You have some interesting versatile tops and I like how you have interchanged them with skirts and jeans.

Thanks Slimcat - I am okay with socks showing too but I did wonder a bit.

The photography is a bit off - the top is a burnt orange and the skirt has flowers in the coral/blush tones. In the photos they look like they work but they don't in reality.

I love your skirts in WFH outfits - so pretty and fun. Work outfit in #2 is nice ( I'm ok with socks showing - comfort ).What about red cropped top with floral skirt ( black with big flowers )?
You look nice in your outfits - like the idea of olive jacket ( good neutral with jeans, black pieces and all your fab skirts ).

Hi to my forum friends

March has has been a really busy month on all fronts here - mostly for work, but with no lockdowns at the moment, socialising has been busier too. Vaccines are here, I won't be due until the second half of the year, but at the moment there is no community covid here. That can change (and has changed in the past) of course.

I added three pieces to the wardrobe, one being planned and two spontaneous purchases - the two dresses that I mentioned in a previous post along with a pink merino sweater by Melbourne brand Cable. So soft, really good for my work, the perfect pink on me. I expect to get good wear out of this. I am yet to wear the occasion wear dresses but hope to shortly!!

I have put a couple of things in the holding zone (two dresses as per the finds below) and I finally donated my flares. I suspect I may change my mind on the Bailey Dress as it is very flattering, but I haven't worn if for 18 months or maybe even more. The black feels too short for my current preferences. The jeans I bought a size too big, and with some stretch, they really felt off with the fit after the first hour or two of wear.

I have been trying some new combinations so there are a few experimental outfits below. The rust top and white pants was a total fail - the pants slip down as the day goes on and the top is relatively short meaning my tummy was very very close to being exposed.

I have been trying to get good wear from some tops and as you will see the four tops in the finds below have been mixed two or three different ways. The three tops that sit just below or on the waistband are all so useful especially with higher rises.

As I start into the winter pieces I feel a bit over the trench coat - and the white jeans. I will sit on both for a month or two and see how I feel about them. They both fill a role in my wardrobe - but I don't feel great in this coat. Too stiff, too short, wrong collar - I can't quite pin my finger on what is wrong with it?

I am actively shopping for:

one to two footwear options (still yet to purchase)

a casual jacket, either in light grey or olive or pale blue

the right work blouse

I am keeping my eye out for flared or bootcut jeans.....(a HEWI for me, but I think options might be better this year)

Photo One - party look (photo taken at midnight), lunch with friends and the work look that failed

Photo Two - work look, the socks felt fun but is this silly?

Photo Three - two more work looks, one with the coat that is on the chopping board

Photo Four - two casul work from home looks

Photo Five - three working from the office looks

Thanks for looking.
