I agree that black allowing for visible skin is important and probably why wear it more in summer than any other season

Style Fan, same! I used be be quite snooty about my reading material, but no longer.

Joy, thank you for that compliment about the black. I like that California weather allows me to wear it with more visible skin, which I think makes a huge difference in how heavy it feels.

suntiger, I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing! We did wine on the balcony. Our roofs are a bit more separated. I feel so lucky to have not one, but TWO outdoor spaces accessible from my house.

Sal, I hurt for young people right now, and all those on the cusp or in the midst of major changes, who are having life put on hold. Graduations, weddings, new jobs, moving out on your own... it hurts even more to put those things on hold than it does to pause everyday life. We had a family member (my husband's uncle) pass away last night, and it's difficult to have to wait on that sort of gathering as well.

I thought I responded but I must have deleted it in the rush. You look lovely here and the new pieces are stunning additions. I too am drawn to black when I want simplicity and I always admire how you put it together.

I am pleased you have found a kindred spirit neighbour. That is a silver lining indeed.

My 18 year old is struggling being back home with his Halls of Residence closed. I missed him when he was gone but I can see that it is best for him to be out there doing his thing!!

Big yes to column of black + neutral accessories- nothing easier than that!
Bored extraverts are driving me a bit nuts these days :/ I've been enjoying the quiet and time to get things done- then the phone will ring "I'm soooooo booooored."
But drinking wine on the roof sounds nice!

nemosmom, I haven't experienced that sort of eerie quiet yet. Traffic is down considerably, and there are fewer people out, but still plenty. As I said, though, I live in a dense part of the city, It's not that people aren't taking social distancing seriously. They definitely, are, but there are a lot of nearby restaurants doing brisk takeout business and a large Kaiser building that I'm sure employs hundreds of essential workers.

Pat P, totally understand that. These are uncertain times, for sure, and all of my slow fashion purchases have involved a certain amount of pre-planning. I even ordered swatches from Only Child before committing to any of their pieces!

JenniNZ, I am so glad to have our son still living with us through this. I know it's probably not the easiest for him, as a 19-year-old wanting to assert his independence, but most of his friends are in the same boat right now. Everyone who was in dorms is back with their parents, and even some who had moved into apartments have moved home for the duration.

notsaf, it's funny, you don't really think of LA as a place where people wear a lot of black, but I had a friend visit this winter and, while she was wearing her fun and colorful vacation pieces, she looked around asked me, "Why is everyone wearing black?!" Cities are cities.

Kathie, that's a lovely compliment. Thank you!

rachylou, you and me, both! I appreciate where it's coming from, but a little balance, maybe?

UmmLila, those are exactly the sorts of things I'm doing. Especially with the escapist fiction. I'm embarrassed even to tell people what I'm reading, but I'm SO glad I got my LA Public Library card before everything shut down.

Shevia, part of why I spent so long chatting with my neighbor the other night is that she's a single mom trying to work at home with a five-year-old. I remember how much attention and energy kids that age require, and how desperately you sometimes just want to have a normal conversation with another adult. It's definitely easier with older ones!

Style Fan, it's such a weird social shift that's happening. Here's hoping it's only temporary.

There are a couple of other Only Child pieces I've had my eye on, too. I really like their Dune wide-leg pants and the Mira top (which is like the one I have, but with a v-neck).

Bijou, it has truly been a joy to shift my purchasing to small and ethical fashion companies. Even before COVID-19, items came packaged with so much care, and bearing personal thank you notes. It makes me want to honor that care and thoughtfulness when I wear the pieces

Suz, turns out my neighbor was another former English major, and we have similar taste in books, so we bonded easily!

Zaeobi, I'm not a huge fan of using black as a neutral with other colors either. It's all about the silhouettes!

torontogirl, it's really crazy! I think all the extroverts normally must get all their extroverting out by mingling amongst themselves. I feel for personality types who thrive on social interaction right now, though...isolation must be so much harder on them!

Angie, the black top is going to be awesome with my skirts (see below)! Such joy in finding something so versatile, and in a shape that adds some variety to my wardrobe. Here's one dress I currently have my eye on (in white)... https://hackwithdesignhouse.co.....rap-dress/

Runcarla, you're so right about the long-term supply chain implications! It's going to be interesting, for sure. I suspect fast fashion will come out fine with their quick turnarounds, and made-to-order will be all right if they can make it over the hump. All those companies in the middle, though?

Staysfit, I had a realization reading your response.I prefer to spend more time deciding what to purchase up front and less time deciding what to wear each morning. I'm thinking different people fall into different places along that continuum, with some leaning towards spending time on both (Angie) or neither (my husband ).

I always love hearing how thoughtful you are about your impact on your colleagues and patients, and suspect your steady demeanor is a huge comfort to those around you.

Cardiff Girl, I wouldn't say the virus isn't getting me down, because it has been, for sure. It's exacerbated some of the loneliness and isolation we've felt living in a new location, far from friends and family, and set back the momentum we had in starting to change that. It's not forever, though, and right now, being healthy and financially stable are privileges I'm not quick to overlook.

Vildy, it would be so fun to have video, wouldn't it?!

(back with more)

Even with my affinity for colour, I've also been learning how great a column of black can feel (despite previously being told that I don't suit black).

I think the key for everyone though is knowing your limits - for me personally, relying on black as a neutral with other colours doesn't feel right. So I've instead put together a black capsule wardrobe. But with orange & leopard accessories, of course ;)

You may not need to do the same but it's something to consider if at any point the column of black stops feeling 'easy & fun' anymore. Like the uptick in sudden socialising

Thank you for posting this, I found it very uplifting, especially the having a glass of wine and chat with your neighbour. Your presence and attitude to ethical and practical wardrobe choices is inspiring. I do fear that smaller fashion designers may not survive. Whilst I am not likely to purchase much in the short term, if I do, it will be to support those smaller businesses.

Jenn, that Only Child top is absolutely stunning on you. Beautiful. I have been eyeing it for a few years (I think). The all-black look with unique accessories is a perfect way to express your style. I can see that working so well with a small well-curated wardrobe.
I am also an introvert (probably the most introverted person on the planet) and I am finding all kinds of people are reaching out after years of having little contact. I had to laugh at UmmLila comment. My boyfriend from the early 80s contacted me. Now that was "interesting". What will happen in a month or two?

I liked your whole post but #4 resonated the most. As I just said to my sister "this isolation is too social for me!". I am used to being alone in the house a chunk of the day and instead there is someone everywhere! I am very fortunate that my someones are old enough, and busy enough, to mostly fend for themselves but they are also need support and a lot of reminders. My husband has a very large extended family and all evening is video chat, Zoom, etc. Very disorienting!

Ii appreciate your perspective. ’m on the WFH train for the last 20 years, so the social distancing/ quarantine / lockdown is a lot inline with my existing lifestyle. I’m glad to relax my mind, read escapist fiction, play in my closet and bake more. I’m finding my professional social interactions to be more gentle than usual, which I appreciate and that I’m hearing more from friends etc (why did almost every guy I dated in the last year come out of the woodwork last week?)

Love it. Love! the slow, made on order aspect. Your style, as always, strikes me as perfect for LA.

I’m a curmudgeon. People have gotten too chatty for me now... lol.

That is a beautiful top on you. I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness in slow-shopping and finding just the right pieces. Your posts exude a sense of calm, and that comes across in your outfits.

I adore that black top! I also find the few items I have with curved hems are really flattering.
With my overseas family (daughter/SonIL in San Francisco Bay Area, sister and her family in Oxford, UK, husband’s brother and his wife in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) we are finding just What’s App and Messenger or even old-fashioned land line ( with my sister) are working fine. After all we have all seen each other in person as recently as November- so lucky that daughter’s wedding in Vietnam was last year before all this! So we are not really needing video calling. Depends how long it all goes on, before we might. I am missing my daughter especially but her humour comes through just in messages!

That is a lovely top, Jenn! I immediately went to the Only Child website to look at it. Sadly, not in my budget right now, especially with work cutbacks looming. It captures the relaxed chic I always associate with you.

Jenn, I appreciate the time and selectivity you have put into procuring well designed ethically sourced garments. Wearing a column of color to serve as a backdrop for statement accessories like amazing shoes, scarves or jewelry truly resonates with me at present. I am looking for ways to decrease the number of choices I have to make on workdays when getting dressed. I find myself gravitating towards simple silhouettes and sleek lines, more neutrals and like you columns of color. WFH I feel less need for variety, and find the elements that provide uniqueness to my style are not those that change as much as those I wear routinely. I echo your sentiment in wanting to continue to present yourself to others with your typical laid back natural ease. I similarly believe it will provide comfort to those I serve if I remain consistent and authentic to my personal Genuine Composed style aesthetic while connecting via video conferencing etc.

So many excellent points, Jenn. I’m imagining S/S is in the warehouses and on the way to stores, but what will F/W look like if manufacturers are making masks and gowns? (This is not a condemnation, just a question - who knows where we will be in 6 months?)

I’m short on summer items, but can get by.

I can't wait to see your new white dress for Summer!

You look super cute and VERY YOU as always, sweet Jenn. Cute with some brown sandals and your fedora too. An even more Jenn-look!

The black fluid high-low cropped top is soooo flattering. I bet great with some of your skirts and black shoes too. When you're back in the mood for skirts.....

I LAUGHED at how social distancing has made things more social for you... HAHAHAHAH :)

First:

"On the best of days, thinking about the state of my wardrobe is a pleasant respite for a Sunday afternoon. This isn't the best of days for anyone on the planet, I don't think, but I'm happy to still be able to dwell on a triviality that brings me regular doses of joy, Here are my thoughts for March".

HIGH FIVE. Thank you for expressing that beautifully, Jenn.
