Also, you know what else is good reading for managing people - all those books popular non-fiction books on neuroscience and how the brain works. And St. Teresa of Avila on the alligators.

My job involves a lot of bookkeeping and customer service, with constant interruptions. It's not for someone who can't multitask. I say that because there are days when I'm so overwhelmed and wish I could go somewhere private to get my work done. Alas, that never happens. Our CPA asked me how I do it, and I just told her, "I just do."

I've managed a lot of different types of people over the years. For me, it mostly comes down to pure and open communication. If something is bothering you, you need to talk about it. If you are the manager and someone is constantly interrupting you, I would likely outline some time that I am not available (unless there is an emergency and emergencies involve things like someone injured, the building falling or a key customer who is very mad).

I think giving people space and responsibility to do their work is important but of course that's assuming they already have good guidelines.

A few books I have read over the years include "Personality at Work", "Coactive Coaching" and "One Minute Manager" (oldie).

I don't have a book recommendation, but I can tell you that when I was teaching piano out of my home, there were a few parents who always brought their children to lessons late. I simply scheduled them for 15 minutes after their stated appointment time, and all was well. They arrived "late," but were on time according to my schedule. Also, I made them sign an agreement before enrolling their children for lessons. One of my policies was that if they arrived late, they received only the time remaining in their allotted time slot. I made it very clear that time was reserved specifically for their child. I charged a month in advance, so if they didn't show up at all, I kept the $. This is common practice among private piano teachers, so I wasn't doing anything that nobody else was doing.

Sounds tricky, elpgal! I've enjoyed Rachy's insights. At my work place we want to manage the managers who are far away in the Big City, and alternate micro managing with leaving us to our own devices.

Can I pontificate now about my theory of management?

Motto: responsibility = able to respond

First 6 laws:

1. You're there to infect people with your emotional calmness, so they can function and not be all paralytic.
2. You're there to provide emotional safety, so they can function. When someone breaks a stack of dishes, you lead the applause and go get the broom.
3. You're there to get people what they need to do their job.
4. You pass on the word about what needs to be achieved. Your people tell you how something like that is achieved, what the challenges will be, what they won't be able to do because they're now doing this other thing and what thus has to be covered another way, etc.
5. You must accept you lose, like, 10 IQ points when you're doing the managing and just have no clue.
6. The person complaining and criticizing - that's the one with no authority.

...I'm writing a picture book too on production management: Little Muffin Girl

LOL at Rachy. I'm not a manager but my work flow, ie getting done what is on my actual schedule, is constantly being interrupted by various phone calls, requests etc that can't be ignored, and it's been starting to stress me out. I am trying to reframe these as "shenanigans" and it makes it a little easier.

As for constant interruptions, I don't know your environment but are you able to work from home sometimes? Move yourself into a conference room for an hour? Or even block off certain times of day for certain tasks and let them know you shouldn't be interrupted unless it's urgent? This might let you get some work done and encourage your employees to think of solutions on their own. Demonstrating confidence in their ability to do so might help as well (not to say that you haven't, and depending on their personalities. But even someone who is hard-wired to go to the boss with every little thing might be retrainable to some extent if you just are not available).
When I worked on a busy office floor managers would work at home when they had certain intensive stuff to get done like writing performance reviews.

Have to think about books, but this is a good article: http://www.forbes.com/sites/vi.....o-manage/#

Only things about this article: Never go to HR until you're ready to fire. Two, remember, whatever makes a person difficult to manage, it's unlikely you can just talk to them about it and they'll be able to just do things differently. You most likely will have to arrange things so they can function to the best of their ability - and you'll have to find another way to do what you want done and they can't do. And that IS where the joy of management is found: being clever like that.

I have my own theory of management. I think it's a good idea to really sit and think out for yourself in minute by minute detail what a manager does. It is indeed a science and art to be studied.

Last thing about constant interruptions: I had a mentor and learned all he did all day was email and make phone calls. At the bakery I have put times to every stage of our process and then padded it for shenanigans. And I tell people that. Lol. I have to deal with the shenanigans while I scale ingredients. I use dry erase pens to checkmark as I go and I never scale directly into the bowl, the mark of a deft baker, because the shenanigans make me forget where I left my own head.

I find myself in the position of managing a millennial and a person older than me and it is trying! I tried getting out of this assignment but my supervisor suggested it would be good practice for me when he retires.

I am not a reader of self-help books but in this case, I am overwhelmed enough that I want to read any and all distilled wisdom I can lay my hands on.

Can you recommend some books? I wish I could go in to the specifics of my situation but mostly they pertain to gender and managing my time in the face of constant interruptions.
