Diana: very good insight. I did look at the band of this sweater and decided it worked a) because it hit me at a good point and b) because when I wear it loosely and pull it forward for a chunkier look, the band tends to tuck under and camouflage. You can't really tell in these photos but it ends up being very slouchy and cute.

Jules: I realized after you mentioned it that I never took a full frontal shot. my apologies!

Thank you for all of the input ladies! This is a fun, new, very different piece for me

(OK, so I realize that most people do not have the option of making their own sweaters like I do, but...) the important thing is, as Jules mentions, how and where the bottom band hits your body. It's kind of like how you don't want the bottom of your shirt to hit at your widest point, only more pronounced because a band is a lot wider than a hem. When I knit sweaters, I often make them without a band, or with a looser band. Sometimes on commercially bought sweaters you can stretch out the band by blocking it (get it wet and pin it in a stretched out configuration). Depends on the fiber content how successful this is. I also try not to make/buy them right at the length where the band cups my butt, if you know what I mean. I prefer either longer (like a mini dress length, but caveat is that I have a big butt/hips but no saddlebags) or shorter (the band sitting right above the wide part of the butt can be very flattering, like on yours).

A cropped chunky sweater also works admirably well, and I love to layer long sheer layers under it.

I love that colour, and the loose knit, but my issue would be specifically with the band around the bottom, because these never seem to sit well on my hips. So I am wearing a chunky-ish cable knit sweater today but it falls straight down with no band. I find that much easier to wear.
I like the outfit fine but I can't honestly tell from your photos how this sweater fits you in the areas that *I* find troublesome on me, actually. Need a full-length frontal shot.

I actually prefer my chunky sweaters to be oversized, that way the thick fabric does not cling to my bottom, I am a pear too. I generally don't size up or down, I just choose an oversized cut. I think the sweater you have was cut oversized. That is why the size down still works.

ETA: and yes, the band is an issue for me too, just like Jules.

Hi Ladies,

I bought a gorgeous chunky knit sweater at H&M this last weekend and wanted to 1) share the purchase and 2) share how I made this gorgeous (albeit not super flattering) sweater work for my pearshaped frame: http://bit.ly/V56sFN

I'm also super curious how other top and bottom heavy ladies make styles like this work.

xo!
