Shiny, that is really interesting about lipsticks! That seems like an unusual reaction... Peri also mentioned the pigments. I wonder if 100% Pure would be worth looking at (as long as you don't have allergies to fruits and some herbs). Their makeup pigments are all fruit based. I also wonder if they would send you samples or offer to refund if it doesn't work? I don't know for sure, as I haven't asked. But years ago I did call them and they were good about looking into my question about what "may contain mica" meant on their labels.

Wow! Sarah, that's quite a reaction to mica!

Put me in the sensitive camp as well. I wish I could figure out what ingredients I'm sensitive to, so I could read labels and then steer clear. I've had reactions to lots of things marketed for sensitive skin. Like Cetaphil. Makes me itch like crazy. Neutrogena sunscreen designed for sensitive skin -- gave me a nasty crop of white heads and inflamed skin that took a week to clear up. I forget the brands now, but have had lots of reactions to expensive lipsticks supposedly marketed to be pure & natural and all that. I think it might be the pigment, as it seems to happen with darker more heavily pigmented versions. We're talking painfully swollen lips!

In general, I have learned to stick to drugstore brands -- primarily CoverGirl and Almay. My theory is that drug store brands enjoy such a mass market, they're less apt to have ingredients that will cause problems. Also, they are inexpensive enough that if I do get a reaction I am not out a ton of money.

Luckily I am not that much of a make up gal to begin with. I stopped wearing eye shadow about a decade ago, because it just looks odd on me. I do like it when a professional (or my daughter) does up my eyelashes with coats of mascara and adds eyeliner for me, but shadow just tends to look goofy. I do love love love doing my lips -- I just don't like splurging on expensive lipstick only to have a reaction and have to throw it out.

Thanks so much for all of the great input! This is all so helpful. It is great to have so much collective wisdom and trial and error all in one place!

I had to chuckle a little over your comments, Graylene. My husband really wanted to try a scented laundry detergent because his work clothes are so dirty that even cleaned with our fragrance free detergent, they just don't smell clean. So he set out to find the most natural seeming, yet scented product he could find. The Method, lavendar/cedar product he brought home caused him to break out in hives from head to toe! Poor guy... I wasn't sure whether it was the lavendar or the cedar... or both that got him. I also know that poison ivy climbs on cedar trees and even wondered if that somehow made it into the bottle! Yikes!

Totally get the problems with natural products some have. My mum's work field in the ministry is consumer protection and she doesn't recommend using most of the stuff. Conventional cosmetics are usually much better tested for once, at least in Germany. The ingredients in the natural brands often create problems with bacteria, like Gaylene mentioned. That said, I'm all for breaking it down to the last ingredient with the natural stuff. It's more expensive but you can really test out what works or what doesn't. I'm not buying any ready mixed creams/lotions/whatever of "natural" brands. Conventional make up brands can be better for the same reasons, if you buy bigger brands chances are they are tested more widely and will work for you. Although I'd prefer them not to do animal testing. And cheap conventional make up has its own set of problems.

@Greyscale
Maybe you used the wrong oil? Have a look at the link I posted above, I think she really knows what she's talking about when it comes to oil cleansing.

Interesting! Fortunately, I'm not super sensitive to a lot of things, and I wasn't even aware that mica was so prevalent in makeup.

Like Alione, I have found my main problem is with anything that clogs pores, like mineral oil, petrolatum, or silicones (e.g., dimethicone). It used to be that mineral oil was the ubiquitous ingredient I had to watch for, and now everything has silicones in it. (They do make a cream feel nice and silky on the skin.) I'm using Arcona skin care, which is free of all these things, and the Chanel makeup I'm using is working great for me, too. I prefer a mineral sunscreen (rather than a chemical one), and Chanel has it.

You are not alone, Keturah, in being sensitive to "natural" products. Lavender oil is my problem. Even a drop in a bottle of product is enough to cause my skin to react. And mica is also problematic; if I use a mineral-based product for more than a couple of days, my skin becomes very red and irritated.

Whenever someone tries to sell me on "natural" products as being better than "chemicals", I'm like Grayscale in pointing out there are a host of "natural" substances that I wouldn't care to put on my skin--like the sap from stinging nettles or poison ivy. I believe that it's hard to predict what products will work for a particular person, and one person's "gentle" can be another person's "harsh". My husband is allergic to something in baby shampoo, for heaven's sake. He only found that out when he put a small amount into his hand to wash our son's hair when our son was an infant. And my sister got a bacterial infection in her eye from a "natural, preservative-free" product that she had just purchased. Her eye doc warned her to not put these products near her eyes in the future because he sees too many instances of bacterial infections in people who use these products.

Another thing that might cause problems with eyeshadow is red dyes. If you are having problems try staying away from anything purple and pink obviously, but also be really careful with browns. Very many browns are red based.

I've had good success with CeraVe hydrating cleanser, lotion and cream. But not with CeraVe eye cream, that caused me problems. Go figure.

Thank you all for your ideas and sharing your stories! Very interesting. I also think it is really something how each person's snesitivities can be so unique (great analogy to seaonal allergies, Greyscale!). My mom is also one who has trouble with some of the more "natural" products (such as 100% Pure and Juice Beauty because she is allergic to apples and some nuts). I think it really does boil down to finding out what specific things cause the problems.

Aliona, I have not looked into Silicone - I'll let you know if I find out about that one... I know that the foundations from Juice Beauty and 100% Pure were pretty light weight but I don't know about silicone content (I'm guessing 100% Pure doesn't have it).

Thank you for sharing these links! I'm always on the lookout for good natural products. I've been using a line called Naturopathica for the past year. I'm really happy with them, though they are a bit spendy. I am limited in my choices with them though as shea butter in facial care products gives me milia, and some of their products use it. My big cosmetics and skincare peeve these days is silicone ingredients like dimethicone. It seems to be in EVERYTHING, and is a big contributor to milia. Does anyone know of lightweight natural tints, foundations or BB creams that are silicone free?

Keturah, that may be less common, but it makes total sense to me. You can easily be allergic or sensitive to natural products. I mean, pollen is pretty darn natural, and try telling anyone with seasonal allergies that it's fine because it's natural!

Many natural products make me break out, not because of sensitivities to the ingredients but because the oil clogs my pores or something. I was so excited to try the oil facewash method but it really didn't work for me.

Whoa -- look at your eye! Yikes! And thank you for the tip about mica. That's a good example about how marketing makes use of specific language to try to dupe people. 'Natural' does not necessarily equal 'good for you'. (Poop is very natural!).

I have skin that probably falls into the 'somewhat sensitive' category, but I've never had an averse reaction to eyeshadows. Mind you, I don't wear eye makeup besides mascara very often. I'm more of a lipstick girl.

What really hurts me is essential oils, floral waters, and anything too natural. I can't do any of it. Hives, rashes, flaky patches, contact dermatitis, acne -- I'm miserable.

I haven't had too many issues with mineral makeup causing sensitivity issues, though I gave up wearing mineral foundation. It just didn't last on my face.

I've had skin issues since puberty. After years of trying all sorts of products on my own, from drugstore to high-end, I finally found a good esthetician who had been practicing successfully for the last 20-some years. And then, I listened to her, bought her products, and did what she told me to do down to the letter. My skin finally cleared up, calmed down, and has been happy ever since. And I have to say, her products are mostly chemical-based, with some natural ingredients in it (usually aloe, a little jojoba, etc.) No SLS, or anything too harsh. But it's not olive oil and beeswax either.

IDK...am I weird for saying my skin is uber sensitive to "natural" skin care?

xo

I'm in the chemical sensitivities club too!

Clinique makeup is almost always ok for me, except their chemical sunscreens and moisturizers. Their eye makeup, especially, is problem-free for me. I appreciate that a lot but I wish they made more hip colors.

Bare Minerals blush and powder are good for me.

Other than those two brands, I've basically given up on makeup. But, Sephora is wonderful because I can try something in the store, wear it all day, and see if it causes problems before I buy.

All my skincare products are DaVita (moisturizer, sunscreen, various other treatments). They have no preservatives, which I've realized is one thing that slightly irritates my eyes. Their solar moisturizer is literally the only face sunscreen I have found in two decades of intense searching. Only downside - the sunblock is all zinc and it does look rather chalky on my face, but it fades quickly. I can't do titanium sunblocks, I think, which tend to be less chalky.

I'm using essential oils too. I've started with Jojoba and Coconut, but I've just bought pumpkinseed oil after reading this article about oil cleansing. We'll see how that works out. She has some great looking other articles too, her blog might be interesting for someone going the minimal and natural route. Personally I'm also a fan of pure shea butter for skincare. I use more on skin that tends to be dry, like my elbows, and just a little for the rest. And I love it for the hands in winter. I had neurodermatitis as a child which has more or less gone away after a treatment at a health resort as a teen and a change of routine. The doc there suggested to use as few products as possible and my skin got much healthier that way (after getting worse for a time). Now I'm very hesitant about introducing anything new that isn't absolutely necessary. I don't really wear makeup, so no tips for that. The occasional mascara and lipstick I use are conventional cosmetic brands.

I also love coconut oil and I use it to remove my eye makeup. But my face tends to breakout when I try to use it as a moisturizer. I agree, it is amazing as a hand and body moisturizer! I love using on my legs after shaving...

My eyes took note from yours.

A fabulous skin moisturizer I have found is coconut oil. I can't use it on my face, but it is my go to of choice for my body, especially in the winter. No artificial fragrance but it still smells great. It can be a bit heavy for summer though.

I enjoyed Angie's post on makeup because I really love playing with makeup and certainly apply more than the basics on her list. But I have a lot of issues with both sensitivities and preferences for natural products. I noticed a number of comments from people like me who like makeup, but have to be careful. I'm sure that there are others who have done a lot more research than I have, but I thought I'd share a few things that I have discovered, in case it will help any of you.

First of all, I discovered something that I think many women may not even know is a thing - that it is possible to be extremely sensitive to the mineral mica - which is in SO many makeup products (eye shadows and blushes, but even in many other things). Because it is a mineral and quite "pure" people don't think of it as a typical allergen, but from what I've read, mica has very sharp edges that can hurt sensitive skin. I keep trying little experiments, and some accidental experiments, and keep coming back to the realization that my skin hates mica! But that doesn't mean that I can't wear eyeshadow or eyeliner. Even though I prefer very natural skin care, I do find that the extremely natural companies do often use a lot of mica (because it is "natural"). There are just a few companies that I have found who have some eye and cheek makeup without mica (and there may be more that I have not found yet).

I just found these sites, and haven't ordered anything yet: http://epicmineralbeauty.myshopify.com
http://www.corycosmetics.com/m.....s.htm#vmpp
I haven't tried this either, but these eyeliners don't have mica (but their eye shadows do, so never assume a company never uses mica in any products unless they say so): http://devitaskincare.com/stor.....0_273.html
The makeup that I use on my eyes is Urban Decay, but they do use mica in some products, so I have to read everything very carefully before purchasing. Their colors are amazing and beautiful! The 24/7 Velvet pencils are incredible!
http://www.urbandecay.com

I'm also really particular about skin care. I don't like the idea of putting lots of chemicals and fragrances on my face, so I have tried all kinds of things. Here are some of my favorites:
My current obsession: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CrunchyBetty
Others that I have tried and liked in the past (but I get bored, so didn't discontinue for any negative reasons, and I set the links up to take you to my favorite product on each of those sites.)
100 Percent pure: http://www.100percentpure.com/.....-cream-1oz
Juice Beauty: http://www.juicebeauty.com/sto.....g-oil.html

I look forward to hearing about other products for allergies and sensitivities that you know of! I'm always open to finding more things that I can use. I think I have seen some other threads on the forum, but some of the comments on Angie's post mentioned that they are still searching for products. And I also haven't heard of very many others like myself who have identified mica as a culprit, and thought this might open a discussion.

Just for grins... or shock value, I have attached a photo of what my eyes did a few years ago to get my attention and tell me to stop using anything with mica!
