It is easy to cheer you on, Angie, for being yourself and not dressing like everyone else. However, it is a lot more difficult for many of us to have the confidence to do that in our own lives, as ManidipaM points out. Part of the reason I follow the site is to gain the confidence to be ME instead of trying to be what I think I am supposed to be (i.e. looking like everyone else). Thanks for the confidence boost to everyone who has ever wanted to feel good about themselves while NOT being one of the crowd. It is refreshing to be encouraged to be comfortable and individual, and know that we are still beautiful.

And the show sounds fantastic!

Thanks for a great story, Angie, and the reminder of what sets YLF apart in its positivity and celebration of the personal story.

I recall putting on hideous heels to a 'work party' because that was the thing to do (I had, um, 'encouragement' from my boss) and being in excruciating pain all evening. Wish I'd had the confidence back then to say 'Nope, not my style --- but I can do better and won't let the side down in flats!'

Wow Angie - thanks for relaying this "tale" to us! I LOVE it that you looked unique and fashionable all at the same time - and that you still had Happy Feet at the end of the day. A great reminder - we have complete control over our own style and don't have to be victims of fashion!

So true Angie. Some people can't handle heels 24/7 and that's ok, flats are fab as well.

I am one to be more comfortable in heels these days, however. The pressure from the entire foot hitting the pavement one step after the next, makes my feet swell up horribly in summertime. Wedges are my salvation this time of year. The incline reduces the pressure somewhat.

"This feeling cuts to the core of why style is so very different to fashion. "

This. Now I know why I have gravitated to this site rather than the trend-chasing ones. I have always hated blind conformism. Or knee-jerk anti-conformism for that matter.

Thanks for reminding us that it's OK to make our own style. I often think my outfit would look better with heels, but for everyday, it's just not practical. I feel too tall and it's not that comfortable. I love wearing heels on Sunday to church and for special occasions, but for the rest of the time, it's just not practical. Thanks for reminding me that flats can be stylish, too.

Thanks for sharing that story, Angie. What a great reminder to all of us that we can look fab and be comfy and "own" a look all at the same time. It seems like so many people forget that- they think they can only be comfortable in schlubby clothes and that they can only look great if they're following the crowd.

Sometimes it seems like people get so polarized about fashion. I like your take on fashion--it's about making choices for oneself. While all of us take cues from outside sources, ultimately it's the individual who decides what is right for her at any particular time and place.

BF jeans, sky-high heels with short shorts, fleece jackets, midi dresses--all of these can be ridiculed as hopelessly unflattering or as emblematic of a "fashion victim", but I've also seen these items in outfits that make me think "WOW!". Instead of taking sides, I'd like to think I always have the option to make a decision based on what works for me in a particular time and place. So, while I'm staying with my well-fitted, straight-cut jeans for now, I want to reserve the right to try a slouchy jean in the future without feeling like I'm having to take sides. That's the fun of fashion for me--heels one day, sneakers the next.

Amen, amen, amen Angie. That's really all I can say. I saw a shoe store commercial the other day and thought, "Now this is getting ridiculous." The size of the platforms and the dizzying heel heights are so extreme. Surely no one can wear them for more than an hour without medication! You are like Coco Chanel, freeing us from the restricting female fashions of our day! I hope the women who want the freedom to wear flats will see you and follow suit.

I heartily agree with everything you've said, Angie! It's really fun to be a part of the group in some respects (enjoying the new each season, following trends, etc.), while also adding your own tweaks and emphases. Comfort, environment, budget, preferred colors and shapes, personal likes and dislikes, all factor in, so we don't look identical to each other.

Someday, this will be a parable we all tell young women, I think! You could have hauled around a pair of heels all day in anticipation of a switch for the event - I've read many articles suggesting this. But why bother if you feel you look appropriate and stylish in flats? I bet you stood out more than anyone in 7" heels.

I think we as humans enjoy the unexpected - jokes are like this, and music I think. The eye seems to gloss over the things we've seen a million times before in every storefront and magazine. The little personal quirks and spins become so exciting!

I'm trying to illustrate that we can all make our style comfort levels work, thereby securing outfit confidence and endorphins.

FASHION DEMOCRACY IN ACTION!

There is not one look which transcends everything shown on the catwalk and yet we can be force fed an ideal by the mass media. I love to embrace trends but the execution of the said trend is what keeps a look interesting. WE ARE NOT SHEEP BEING HERDED INTO A PEN, WE ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE BORN WITH FREEDON OF THOUGHT AND I INTEND TO USE IT.

Shannon said it better than I could - "You are our champion for individuality...." I'd much rather feel "fab" in my own right at such an event or for any part of my life rather than conform when it doesn't suit me.

Great story to relate to this morning's post. You are our champion for individuality Angie and I for one appreciate more than you know how you never try to make any of us on YLF feel like we need to conform.

Comfort - both physically and emotionally - should always be part of a person's style. You felt like "you" in your ensemble (which sounds stunning by the way) and therefore would have carried it off with panache. If you had worn sky high heels, you would have had angry feet and probably would have been fussing all evening in your discomfort.

In the light of this morning's blog post I'm going to relay a story.

I went to an extremely snazzy couture fashion show last week. It was on the water and just breathtakingly beautiful. (Seattle is a very pretty city!) Saw all the biggest names in fashion come down the runway debuting their Fall collections. It was killer stunning and I enjoyed every second of it as tired as I was.

The guests there were THE fashion conscious of Seattle and customers who will purchase the pieces that came gliding down the runway. There were thousands at the show and it was quite the fab people watching place!

I saw one other lady wear flats, and the rest of the lovely ladies were wearing gorgeous high heels or very high heels. The men were in flats - and so was I. I was one of the boys!
I had come straight from a NAS preselection appointment with clients and was wearing animal print slipper flats (have to be comfortable when you race around for 12 hours with clients) - along with black silky harem pants, fitted cropped ink blue blazer and neon clutch.

Although I was a foot shorter than most that evening, I felt that my outfit was unique because of the flats. I did not wish I was wearing my heels in order to look more fashionable. I was just so very happy to have happy feet and soak up the glorious couture! And be able to do another full day of preselections with clients the next day with feet that felt fab.

It's liberating and FUN to make a look your own. This feeling cuts to the core of why style is so very different to fashion.
