I can 100% sympathize with foot issues and not getting to wear "fun" shoes. I had foot surgery two years ago and it took 6 months to get out of the Dr boot and ugly white bulky sneakers. And I still cannot sport tall heels. I never could. I have to be very picky about the styles (shape of the toe box and height of the heel) and it is not easy to find shoes that fit all of these criteria. I have found softer soles that can bend easily work well for my foot. I also try to mix in some stylish sneakers, suede works well to look more formal (especially when done in black or brown) yet it's still a sneaker. Good luck!

Krish, I think you have every right to want to wear stylish shoes. I have struggled for the last almost 3 years with pairing a nice outfit with less than ideal shoes. My pretty heels, fancy boots and strappy sandals languish in the closet while I wear Berkies, Uggs and running shoes. At one point this fall I said I was going to donate them all to others with happy feet but my DH convinced me to keep them until after surgery and rehab and then decide. This last year I've been on a mission to find some shoes that at least allow me to wear a bit of heel or wedge when I want to up the ante. I know I'll never wear 4" heels again but I'm willing to compromise. There are shoes with style out there with you name on them. Good luck with your rehab and think tall.

Krish, I read this thread earlier and I thought I had responded. I'm glad I came back to it, what a load of great advice you've received and some of it is even helpful to me.

About the shoes and your style, I just wanted to mention that one of my sisters has an inch difference in her legs (ski accident) and has the regular orthotics with a one-inch cork piece glued onto the heel of the one for her short side. She is able to wear LOTS of different kinds of shoes, as long as they have the depth to accommodate it. Maybe after some initial correction, you will be able to work up to a smaller insole. With all of the platforms, flatforms and wedge sneakers out there, it would be really cool if someone would design a corrective shoe with a 'false bottom' for the longer foot to sink down into. You'd never be able to tell from the outside of the shoe! At this point, I think you should go on with the style you have and treat your orthopedic shoes like a walking cast, something that is necessary for the time being. Maybe a new persona will come to you (in a dream perhaps) that involves stompy boots! :)

I love that you aren't going to take this challenge lying down Krish. I admire you for facing it head on and being proactive about dealing with it. This is such a great attitude! When traveling to see my parents in Sept, I re-aggravated an old hamstring injury (in an event that involved sitting in an airplane several hours and then jumping up and running like a maniac to make my connecting flight--without stretching of course), and after reading the comments from Runswithdolphins, Ornella and others, I think I need to go have some physical therapy work done. As it is, that leg seizes up constantly, even with stretching and doing Callanetics 2x daily, and I'm concerned my body may begin to go out of alignment to compensate, causing me more problems down the road. Also, I need to check out this Physique 57!

Thanks for sharing your story and don't give up! Necessity is the mother of invention, and you will find a way to be stylish no matter what you have to strap onto your feet. Style is all in your head, and you have boatloads of it sister.

I wanted to chime in to say that my husband has one leg longer than the other. His went in to back spasm once after having had pain an problems for some time. He got stuck on the floor for an hour before he could crawl or move. He got treatment of various practitioners and eventually saw a physio who immediately said upon seeing him that he had different leg lengths. My husband had a scan and one of his thigh bones was an inch longer than the other. No amount of yoga or exercising would help as it was not a body misalignment but an actual difference in bone length, specifically his femur. He now wears a lift in one shoe and apart from just a bit of regular stretching he does no specifics for the problem and he is pain free. I just wanted to share this with you as it may be worth finding out if you actually have bone length discrepency and not just mis-alignment.

Janet, I am so sorry you suffered a lower back injury. I am amazed that yoga was so good for you that came a point when you didn't need to do it anymore. Do you do any other exercise? (Thank you for your kind words!)

Elizabeth, you are so right. Thank you!

Carole, your words are full of wisdom. I try to remember them as I walk in my clogs or flats now. I think maybe I am avoiding a worse fate. But I miss my heels!

Sandy, welcome to the club. I am sorry it is not the best one... but members are giving lots of very useful tips here.

Ornella, what a story! Thank you so much for taking the time to share it here. It is very instructive. I am so sorry you were in extreme pain. How fascinating that the pain emerged suddenly, as your subconscious couldn't keep on numbing it any longer. It is also fantastic that you were able to develop friendships with the people who helped you. That is such an encouraging thing to read!
And that you felt like crying after the first session, my God, I want a session too. It feels like there is a lot of subdued pain in my body. When I workout, it's like I try to "squeeze it out" through a good workout but the relief lasts only a few hours, unfortunately.
Physiotherapy makes total sense. For example, the orthopedist diagnosed that my pelvis was not only crooked vertically to accommodate the leg length difference, but also horizontally, with the left side twisting frontwards. It does this to accommodate the longer leg as I walk. Was it like this for you? There is no way I can fix this without help. I have done yoga for some years now, and it lead me to supplement it with Physique 57, a kind of hard core pilates-ballet workout, which for a year now have considerably strengthened my core and leg muscles. Funnily, strengthening my legs and thighs have helped a lot ease pressure on my lower back. However, it is not enough.

Runs, great advice from you too! It is so encouraging to read that despite so many problems, your body is able to do all these fantastic things through exercise. I totally relate about the pilates, even through ailments. I try not to fret about the footwear issue, but, frankly, I must be too coquette for my own good... I have to unlearn how chic I used to look and adapt myself to a less glamorous style. Because I do have short, stumpy legs and the flat, hard shoes are major stumpifying factors. Add this to the realization that I am now officially "old", and it's a bit depressing.

Like many others responding to your post I can so related to your frustration.
The left side of my body is my problem side. The shoulder is held together with pins, the hamstring has been torn twice, the sciatic nerve gets caught in the piriformis muscle and rears its ugly head every once in a while, both the lumbar and cervical spine have herniated discs, the neck has a pinched nerve, and the foot - ah the foot - is waiting for surgery to hopefully reconstruct the forefront. It reminds me of the old children's song "the knee bone's connected to the thigh bone".

I highly recommend using a form of hands on treatment from someone who knows your body and can help keep you upright. I see my chiropractor regularly for adjustments to help keep me aligned. I also get regular shiatsu therapy and this provides me with great relief.

I am so glad that you are exercising and especially that you are doing pilates. Being in the fitness business I can't emphasize enough how much the right kind of exercise can improve everyone's quality of life. I take private sessions with an amazing pilates instructor twice a week. For me this is the very best form of stretching combined with core and balance work. Even with my recent vertigo he was able to give me workouts that challenged me without causing any dizziness.

It's good that you have discovered what the underlying problem is so that now you can move forward with your life. Don't fret too much about the shoe/boot issue. It's important to be comfortable and when you're standing straight and tall everyone will be looking up at the beautiful smile on your face.

Dear Krish, I've had no time to get back to this thread before. Something was very familiar in your story and I wanted to share my experience in case it helps you or anyone.

My first thought was - what caused this issue? Unless you were born with it or had car accident in the past (or similar) which caused heavy strain on your body, I think you need to work on the causes which lead to longer and shorter leg, otherwise you'll have to keep compensating for this issue which will put more strain on your body over time.

11 or so years ago I had terrible lower back pain. I was in such agony that I could not turn in bed at nights, I would just find some position and try to stay like that until the morning. I lived from day to day. I did not think about seeking help, somehow I thought it was natural consequence of my height and sedentary job I did - hours of sitting behind the monitor. I hoped things would settle down on their own. Because the state I had ended up in appeared to have come suddenly, I hoped it would disappear suddenly too. What I did not realise was that the worsening was gradual, over a long period of time time, to which I was silently adjusting - and it was the moment when my body could not take it any longer that it had responded with the extreme pain.

Then, one day, I went to meet a friend (Irish girl) I hadn't seen in a while. It took her one look at me to ask "Are you having back pain? The way you walk is not right."

I was very, very lucky that my friend was in the middle of the training for the special type of physical therapy and was allowed to start practicing on other people (until then it was only students practicing on students under the teacher's supervision). So, offered me to be her case study and I happily accepted.

The first session was interesting to say the least. She said "Your right leg is shorter than the left one by one inch." If I had heard it from anyone else, it would sound freakish, but she has such way about her and I trusted her. She did not make an issue of it at all. So, she started working on not fixing my leg, but balancing my body. We need at about 6-8 sessions because my body was in such bad shape and the treatments need to be scheduled so my body had time to work and adjust to the effects of each treatment. Afterwards, I had regular treatments simply to maintain the balanced state and to relax. There's nothing like a treatment which respects the body and the practitioner who sees the whole picture.

(Later, after moving to England, I immediately searched for similar practice and drove almost an hour each way to have it. The second lady also became a friend over time and a great source of female wisdom and guidance.)

Back to the treatment. After the first session alone I experienced something unusual. I got up, started walking and had this clear thought that something was weird. It took me a while to figure out I actually missed that terrible stabbing feeling at the lower back, which I found perfectly normal in my everyday life until then. The physical relief was as positive as it was shocking. I figured out I used to move my body in such way to minimise the pain and discomfort in some positions.

It became clear just how much mental space managing the pain took. I felt such relief I felt like crying.

Over the next few months she continued working on basically teaching my body to regain its natural state of balance. It was fantastic experience.

She had also taught me to keep an eye on the things which may cause damage again. In my case, the very obvious culprit was the combination of factors: my height naturally needs strong core and back muscles to keep me upright. But then we also have - low desk at work which was not suitable for my height (I was hunched over it), plus overuse of the mouse with my right hand which lead to the top right part of my back to lean to the right, thus making me drop the right shoulder and crook my spine; the spine in return tried to compensate for this imbalance of the top part by twisting the lower half, which in return pulled the bottom part of my body in an unnatural way, so muscles were working overtime to rebalance my posture and thus led to my leg being shorter as the muscles in one leg were in constant tension.

Plus, lifestyle factors play a huge role too, which is not news.

She also taught me to keep an eye on how I walk - humans naturally should move by having the opposite arm and leg extended at the same time (i.e. your right arm and left leg point forward when you step out, then your left arm and right leg... this puts the spine its most natural state of balanced twisting, but we rarely walk like this if we walk at all - out hands are in our pockets or don't do the same thing). Babies learn to crawl like that too - opposite arm and leg move at the same time. From then, I walk with my hands moving freely whenever I can.

I suggest you do some research which form of complimentary body treatment is most suitable for you. Not all treatments work for everybody and not all treatments can help. E.g. may dad finds chiropractic helpful, while I can't stand it. In my view, it is really worth looking for the type of practice which will help your body - which you know best - to function in the most balanced way and which you feel comfortable with. Only when you trust the practitioner you can relax and your body will relax, thus becoming more receptive for the treatment.

My Irish friend took up the training after she herself had very bad back problems and conventional medicine could not offer anything else but the surgery to numb the pain. She decided to explore the other options before such drastic approach, found the therapy which actually helped her and then decided to study it herself. I could fully understand her, because I felt the same after feeling the effects of it and I seriously considered channeling my redundancy money after the last job to three years of re-training too, but then we moved countries again and I'm still finding my feet. But it's a dream I won't give up on just yet. My English practitioner/friend also took up the training after her daughter's ballet scholarship was in jeopardy because of the ankle injury which healed quickly after these treatments.

(Still looking for someone who does the practice at my new place of living…)

If you want more details about the treatment I took, here is the link to the practitioners in Canada. http://www.amatsutherapyintl.c.....ional.html From there you can search further. But in any case, I'd encourage you to look for something - anything that suits you - that will give the answer about the causes, help your whole body if possible and not just leave you to deal with the symptoms.

And, if you haven't tried yoga, this might be the time to give it a try. I am sure there's something out there that will work for you.

Thank you for the education in foot and leg problems, and the additional motivational nudge to begin 'core' work to improve. Echoing Elizabeth P, having a body that functions well and feels good trumps the fast fashion cycle merry-go-round. I appreciate your effort -- you're the Jane Austin of foot pain -- and I would be delighted to join the 'sensible shoe' club here!

Im so sorry! It's fascinating that you have been dreaming about the very thing that ails you. I sympathize with the need for shoes that work for your body, and am in a similar boat. Anything you can do now to limit further damage is so very important and it looks like you found some great shoes that will serve you well. It seems there are many of us out here that struggle with conditions that affect the type of shoe we are limited to. You are not alone!

Exercise is so key. Especially that core work you described. I busted my tailbone about 17 years ago and had awful lower back pain for years. Yoga helped tremendously. I almost never have back pain now, even though I rarely do yoga anymore (today is an exception but we took a severe bump in a jeep last night and I torqued myself -- I'm so sore today!).

It sounds like you are doing all the right things, and awareness and good habits are a huge part of the battle. I meant to mention earlier that the shoes you posted look pretty cute for orthopedic selections! I hope you feel better in no time!

Suz, you are totally right: it is MUCH better to find this out now that messy icy winter is coming, because my main winter boots are flat. When I think I had spent a fortune on heeled ARA winter boots, and they were very comfortable! Oh, well, they will be comfortable next year too I guess.

Deb, $100 is much better than the $480 I had to shell out for specialized insoles at the podiatrist! I will certainly look into it for my other shoes. Thank you for the tip.

Shevia, Neel, Sveta, Adelfa, Scarlet, Joy, MandipaM, Joyce thank you!

JG, my heart goes out to you. Here I was thinking I had issues! Hugs to YOU! You must be in so much pain. How did you sprain and broke your ankles? I wonder if it is because of the leg imbalance?
And poor you to have been lost at Nordstrom in a see of bad shoes that were not your size! This is why small brick and mortar mom&dad shops are so vital. In such a shop, you can also count on the knowledge of the owner and a smaller, wiser selection. Are you sure there aren't any such store in your town?

One of the stores I was sent to by the podiatrist yesterday turned out to look like a clothes store. I was a bit surprised: but then when I mentioned my problem they directed me to a good selection of cuter (orthopedic) working shoes. That's where I got the Dansko. They knew their stuff! They also had these (shown below). I guess they had decided to also sell clothes that look cute with the shoes. It's not a silly idea, and I will go back there. But I would have never in a million years walked in there looking for orthopedic shoes if I hadn't been directed by the podiatrist.

Joy, hugs to you too!

Now I know myself why I sprained my ankle a few years back doing step aerobics: the longer leg. Why I have a tendency to stub my big toe on the floor: the longer leg. Why sometimes I literally trip for no apparent reason: the longer leg. Why when I walk next to someone, I seem to veer on the right side unless I make an effort to realign my direction like a car with a flat tire: my longer left leg!

Ceit, hugs to you too! My, one would never guess from your picks, you have such a lovely long, lite silhouette.

I cannot stress enough how exercising is making my condition so much more bearable. Intuitively, these past years, I had moved on to lower impact but more strenuous exercises, such as interval weight lifting, water aerobics and physique 57. I also do a lot of pilates on my own because it makes me feel better. I spend a good deal of time on the chore: planks, sides, abs and back lifts. Ever since I have started working my back, I feel so much better all over. It must be the girdle effect on the bones. Physique 57 (very similar to ballet) poses some challenge on my big toe, but I modify in consequence. The podiatrist insisted I continue.

What I do: whenever I hit the gym, I make sure I spend at least 15 minutes on my abs, and 15 minutes on my back and sides (+ planks). I look at the clock and I don't get up from these chore exercises until the half hour has passed. It sounds not too much but believe me, it is a lot! You will sweat! Very quickly though, you find you get much stronger, stand straighter, feel lighter. After this 30 minutes on floor exercises, I go on to do the other habitual ones. I've been doing this (the extra 30 minutes) for 2 years and my clothes fit so much better, I move better etc. even if I did lots of exercise prior to this.

I also have incorporated the foam roll at the end or middle of my sessions: I roll my body, my back, on the roll and listen to my bones pop.I have no idea if it does any good, but it sure loosens everything and afterwards you feel all warm inside your body.

The shoes and boots look nice and comfortable and they will serve you well for the Winter.
Everybody has a leg a little shorter than the other. There is no exact symmetry on both sides of fhe body and not just on the legs.
It is a good idea to wear healthy shoes, but I would still get a second opinion. That can't hurt.
All the best to you.

Oh, how disrupting...but worth correcting. I also, like Janet have significant asymmetry and scoliosis. I was in so much pain with my second pregnancy. I have to watch my footwear and make sure I stretch. I have slacked on the exercise and I need to start it up again, because your muscles do most of the work of holding your body scaffold up, and when they get weak your body does all sorts of strange things to compensate.

Both with seeing the doc (those dreams, goodness!) and the shoe selection! I'd wear any and all of those in a heartbeat, gladly.

I'm another forum member with skeletal defects and resulting shoe problems. I have flat feet, scoliosis, one leg shorter than the other, bunions, and a history of accidents that have aggravated the conditions, most recently (in January) spraining both ankles and breaking two bones in my foot. I am still limping and in pain. The good news is that my expensive new orthotics may, by redistributing my weight, ease the pain and make surgery unnecessary. The bad news is really minor in comparison - no heels, wedges, clogs, ballet flats or sandals. Unfortunately my size is hard to find so I have very few choices of oxfords and loafers.
Today at Nordstrom Rack the only shoes that I could fit my orthotics and my feet in were ugly and poor fitting. I finally bought them (3 pairs) because it's cold and the shoes I had worn into the store- the only pair I've been able to wear with the new orthotics- are lightweight and can't be worn with socks. I'm hoping at least one pair will fit me tomorrow when I am thinking more clearly and not walking through racks of shoes that I like better. I really
got to feeling sorry for myself in the shoe department and fought back tears.
(Good for you listening to your body and getting medical care to prevent further pain and complications. I'm hoping that your lift and shoe changes are effective.)

Oh, Krish - what a shame and a pain (literally) and how spooky about your dreams. But I suppose your body was wise and telling you. And if this is temporary, better to have found it now, in winter, in a way -- you would be wearing flat boots anyway in snow a lot of the time, correct? The new shoes will definitely take some getting used to, but I am sure you can incorporate them in your fab style. I wonder if after a while, the orthotics that Deb mentions might be suitable to your situation.

Thank you for your support.

Lyn, I don't know if the lifts are forever... I assume they would be? But the podiatrist said I could wear my heels for 2hrs and less on special occasions, only not on a regular basis. Thank you for your kind words. And boost! Me too, had a soft spot for the El Naturalista booties but they were not cheap. None of these shoes are.

Carter, thank you for helping me see the brighter side. And you are right.

Gigi, you are spot on.Yes, exactly, it require LOTS of energy! I too experience incredible fatigue growing with the day, and always when I am out and about doing things and working (I am a teacher). Now I know why. I hope the new shoes will improve that, and if it does, then it's all worth it, clunk and frump and all.

Janet,I am so sorry for your condition. One would never guess from your photos. I much sympathize with the random weird pains thing. What sparked this for me was that I had a mysterious pain at the base of my big toe. It got inflamed, very angry at me. Doctors took X-rays, told me it was arthritis. Turns out it's because of constant pressure (the toe belongs to the longer leg). Because I must twist my leg in a strange way when I walk, I often trip on my big toe. I must have hurt the joint and it deteriorated from there. Anyway I went in thinking it was all about toe and came out with a revelation about my whole leg and body.

Bummer, but at least now your legs and back will be happier with you.

I tried those Naots on at some point in purple (LOVE naots, they are the best shoes for my feet) and I thought they were really cute but they were too deep for my flat feet, so there should be plenty of room for a lift! Naots in general are really deep in the heel cup and instep; that is why only the sandals and boots work for me; even with an orthotic, the regular shoe styles are too deep for me.
