The lack of support in the US for individuals, corporations, artists, small businesses, ANYONE during this pandemic is astounding. Also embarrassing as an American living in a place where all those people are receiving financial support, and people ask me what’s up with my country.

This is sad, but not surprising. Almost all employees in the US are employed at will, and as such your job is not secure...and in retail no sales means no cash means no way to pay employees...and yes you can take on debt, which Nordstrom has done, but that has proven over time to be a short term fix that hinders long term survival.

It is very sad.....I really feel for people who have lost their job.

I don't think there is an easy answer though - as an employer I can understand how you cannot continue to pay people who cannot work - there is only a limited time you can cover those costs unless there is some sort of assistance from government to do so.

But if you are a staff member on the frontline (or even not the frontline) I can see you are stuck between a rock and a hard place - lose lose whatever decision you make.

There may be business necessity to cut back, but this is atrocious. And I am always a bit dubious about business necessity suspecting that the top of the pyramid is probably still getting a huge salary.

It’s very difficult all over. But also very complicated. The devil is in the details, I would think. And the reportage. To keep a job one usually has to report to work or be able to WFH- now 5 months into pandemic and still going. Don’t see how companies can avoid very hard choices.

This is where a union can help - and it’s too bad they decided to opt out of that protection . It’s getting really hard to find chain retailers to support these days - for me it’s indies all the way now (run by people I know and trust ) .

This makes me so sad about the way employees are often treated these days. Far too often, financial gain is the top, or only, priority, and “Human Resources” are casually disposed of.

What awful, uncaring management. It's obvious that in the current situation, there aren't enough in-store customers (and physically really can't be, with distancing requirements, even if the desire were there for people to shop more in store) to call back all employees and give them the hours they had before. But the way Nordstrom management is handling this situation, as reported in the article, is just despicable. It does make me question my NAS wish list, which is certainly a list of items I could get elsewhere.

Lisa p, if I recall correctly, Nordstrom employees voted many years ago to end their relationship with the United Food & Commercial Workers union.

Angie, I've been checking out the Instagram account, @nordycares, which documents the experiences of employees who have returned to work and continue to work during the pandemic.

It’s all very hard, and disappointing. This type of termination is probably happening at more retail establishments. It’s all so sad to me.

I’d like to hear from the employees who kept their jobs - or maybe I missed that part? Were they interviewed too?

Frankly, I expect far better from Nordstrom. Terminating the employment of people who had questions about precautions being instituted to ensure employee safety is simply unconscionable. Not one word from the Nordstrom family on slashing its workforce.
