Gigi, that is a really smart idea.

Viva, thanks for sharing your experience. I tried the coat on again with a non-bulky underlayer and it was more wearable like that. I would be tempted to keep this one if I didn't know I want to be able to wear it over bulkier layers.

Gail, interesting about your fit experience.

Makrame, yes I remember your post about peacoats. Thanks for weighing about the sizes and color. I wonder though if the red is just not tried on as much as blue or something.

Glory, thanks for the vote of confidence.

I think I am going to go up one size and stick with navy. Hubby says I can have it for Christmas :)

The feedback from this thread was so helpful. I am sorry that I haven't been able to check in more this week, but I will do my best to help out on some other threads too!

Late in but want to say how lovely you look in the peacoat. I would probably get the navy because it is such a classic cut it will last for years. You can add scarves, gloves etc to bring in a pop of colour. I would love the red but like some of the others have mentioned you would likely need to see it in person to be sure of the shade.
This size looks wonderful but if you wish a bit more room I think one size up.

Hi Scarlet, I just returned this peacoat to a JCrew store and I think I may reorder it in one size up. Size 8 felt OK but I did not have much room for layering, and size 10, which I tried on in store, was much more roomy. I don't think it makes sense to go up two sizes.

The only colors the store had in stock were the navy and the red. I noticed that all of the navy coats they had were covered in some sort of fibrous material (it looked like they picked up lint or some wool from a scarf or a hat). This made wonder whether the navy would be a lint magnet (the red coat did not seem to show any signs of lint, and neither did the heather-blue coat I was returning).

I tried this coat on. I would usually be a 2 or a 4, The 2 was skin tight and I couldn't move, the 4 would be ok if I wanted to wear a blouse under , the 6 was perfect fit and comfortable. I am always cold and wear more than a blouse in the winter under a coat. I didn't purchase as they didn't have the colors in stock I was interested in.

I would go one size up. I went one size up last year, and I kind of wish I hadn't. I don't think the tightness was as big a factor for me as it sounds like it is for you. Anyway, my thought is that if you go TWO sizes, you might find yourself in the same boat as me, with a coat that feels just a tad too swimmy.
I'm a little unsure what to say about red. There are so many reds, and you have to try it and see how you respond to that particular one. Angie is right that you have to be ready to commit. I do love color, and a few years ago I bought a deep orange peacoat on clearance from JCrew, and I just couldn't bring myself to wear it. It was just too much. Off to consignment it went. Now I have a deep pink one, and except for the very slight size issue, I adore it. I love the color on me and would not change it for the world. Red can cut either way (blue or orange) and it's so hard to tell on a computer monitor just how it will look in person, with your skin tone, etc. I'm unsure, and the navy looks just gorgeous on you.
Good luck with your decision!

Can you use pins to pin the coat one inch out, so that it's not buttoned in front but pinned? That would give you maybe a little bit of an idea of how it would feel at the next size up. I suppose it won't be exact, because there's no way to increase the width in the back, but maybe it would give you some info.

I would vote for going up only one size simply because the coat *looks* like it's a nice fit from the picture. I wouldn't have guessed that it was too snug. So I think that if you go up two sizes, the *appearance* would really suffer. Which makes me think one size up would be enough.

You can always wear different coloured scarves and gloves with this, too. The neckline lends itself to that. So you can get a jolt of colour that way. And change the buttons eventually, too, if you like.

Karymk, that is a big reason I don't order from them. Their sizing has been all over the place in my experience.

DeniseP, I guess you are still on a coat hunt too. That makes me feel better about the white though. I was concerned that it looked like maybe a very dirty white. I am thinking for a winter color that baby blue could be great. Still cheerful but more subdued. I hope you find your color.

With all the feedback I am thinking to go for classic navy in this coat and up one size. The fabric and make were positively dreamy.

Scarlet,
I tried this majesty coat in three colors: navy, bone and heather blue.
Like you, I wanted to liven up my winter season with a fun bright color, so out went the navy. While ordering from the website, I had hoped that the bone color was going to be a winter white, but it disappointed. It reminded me of my late grandmother's coat and made me feel OLD. Then I tried the heather blue, and decided that it also looked frumpy. I did come to a conclusion, however, heather colors do not work for me. Prefer a richer saturation of color.
I saw the red color in the store, and thought it was orange.
As for size, this navy one looks great on you!

Angie, I always try on JCrew once in the season to check that their sizing hasn't changed! I think it does. Just when I think I have my sizes down so I can do easy mail order, they seem to mess with it. You are teeny tiny!

It's weird; even my go-to Martina wedges feel small on this latest run.

Ah, this is helpful. Karymk, this is a 0, but it feels too tight to move my arms comfortably, so maybe a 2 is the way to go. That way the arm length will also change minimally. Also a good tip to check eBay. Since they have done these for a few years they must be available.

Angie, thanks. Yes, I think they must vary by the year. Do you have an opinion about color?

I sized down in the Majesty, and have a 00 Regular. (I usually wear a 0 at J.Crew). Crazy. Perhaps they were cut bigger three years ago? My citron Majesty is a few seasons old. My tomato red Metro J. Crew coat is 00 Regular too. I found the cut large at the time. Also a few seasons old. It would not surprise me if cuts have become smaller overtime. That seems to be the case over quite a bit of retail at the moment.

I vote one size up, Scarlet. (Although this fits beautifully as is over these layers).

I have the majesty peacoat so I can speak to this. Although the zero fits me with a slim underpinning, it's a tad tight in the shoulders so I sized up to a 2. That's one full size. It still fits great, but now I have wiggle room. I don't think you need to go up two sizes.

The off white Majesty is not so white that you would have to worry about dirt. It's a dark bone. The red is amazing. I have the navy and I always wished I'd gotten the citrus frost or berry colored one! And I know another fabber just got it in the aquaish shade and she looks amazing in it.

Check on Ebay in your size, there are a bunch of Majesty's there.

Following along on my winter coat quest, I tried the majesty peacoat from J. Crew. The coat is beautiful, but too small! The petite sizing was way too short in the arm, so I am not even showing that. This is the regular. I lightened the photo a lot so you can see the fit. Over my bulky winter sweater it is way too tight. (The buttons look funny because some of them are still wrapped in paper from shipping.) The next sizes larger are 1 inch bigger in the chest and I am debating whether to go up one or two sizes. Shipping overseas is a big pain in the cookies, so that's why I am polling for your thoughts. Also I know a lot of people here own or have tried this coat.

P.S. This is the navy. I tried the charcoal as well, which looked surprisingly awful on me. I am also contemplating the red. I secretly wanted white, but it is sold out in my size. My husband says that is a crazy idea anyway with a young child...
