Thank you for all of the good wishes!!!! I am sure Maggie has no idea she has so many internet pals. I do believe all the love she is getting from us, and you -- will help her heal faster.

Right now she is resting in her favorite chair. It's fairly low to the ground, and the vet said it was ok to climb on to furniture as long as she doesn't jump into it. It's the sudden moves that can undo all of the surgery, according to the vet.

My Mom isn't as good about taking her out on a leash, probably because she is afraid of falling on our uneven, hilly terrain. This morning she didn't leash her for her morning ritual, and apparently Maggie RAN back to the house! Last night she surged on the leash at 10 pm because she thought she smelled another critter in need of chasing. So yes she is feeling better and as such capable of doing stupid things. The vet said other dogs have gotten re-injured from jumping in front of the window when the mailman comes. Or, jumping from the backseat into the front to ride next to Mom or Dad. No stairs for Maggie, and in a 3-story house that's complicated. We have child barriers that we move around. We walk her from the kitchen door, then outside, then into the basement door, rather than negotiate any stairs.

So aside from running back to the house after her morning detail, she is being very good. She almost never licks the scar. What a relief. She loses coordination with the e-collar (Crutcher -- perfect description "instrument of torture"), and crashes into things which could cause her more harm.

On Tuesday her stitches (they are actually staples) come out. The site is still very warm to the touch, but the tissue looks very healthy and healing well. No signs of infection only inflammation, but the two anti-inflammatories we've given her (Rimadyl and something else) have caused terrible diarrhea (ugh - inside too). If I touch her leg she winces, so I know she is still in quite a bit of pain but as I said before she is tolerating the pain medication (Tramadol) very well.

Elly thank you for sharing your story about your dog's hind leg strength. My house is a tenth of a mile next door to my Mom's and I took her there once already but she seemed strained on the slight incline walk back. So I'm not doing it again it until she's more healed, but maybe in a week or two I will start repeating the walk as it might be good for her. The vet knows our property and said she could do this walk, it's just a question of when.

Carter thank you so much for the offer of the meds! I will PM you separately.Sorry for the loss of your lab Halle. :-( 16.5 years is impressive for any dog especially a large dog like a lab and a pure bred no less, as we all know they have more congenital health issues. However I know that does not make your loss any easier.

Oh, Denise, such great news that she is doing well. You must be so relieved and happy! She sounds like a lovely and very loving dog. How loving of you to give her more time with you free of pain and able to do doggy things that she loves. Sending warm wishes your way. It is always scary when a loved one has surgery of any kind. So, so glad she is thumping that tail again in pleasure.

Denise, so happy she's doing well. Our black lab, Halle took Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM for her hips. It seemed to help her tremendously. I had just opened a new bottle when her health started a rapid decline and we lost her at 16.5 years old. It's ridiculously expensive. I haven't thrown it away because I knew someone would eventually need it. I would happily send it to you for Maggie if you would like. It is open, but the exp date is 2017. PM me your address if you would like them.

It is so good to hear that she is doing well. My pup has had both knees worked on and it changed his life while our vet discouraged it for our aging lab who is now passed-- she had many medical problems though. I would encourage you to try to maintain strength in your dog's back legs as that is the biggest post-knee surgery issue with mine--- doesn't run and jump and is more likely to crash when attempting because of atrophy to the rear leg muscles.

We did it, we scheduled surgery for our black Lab Maggie (7 years 8 months) this past Friday and she came through it very well. A surgeon travelled from Sacramento to do a TPLO. Although I had read some negative things on line about this procedure, our local vet assured us that this was the Gold Standard procedure with the best results. She stayed at the animal hospital for 2 days and we picked her up early Sunday morning. She was beyond happy to see me and my Mom, her main "parents." I held her on the ride back, she did have a little bathroom accident but nothing that the old backseat dog blanket couldn't fix.

The biggest challenge has been restricting her activity, but she is such an obedient dog we are having success I think. She is on a course of antibiotics and pain medication. She can't take Rimadyl, which has turned out to be a blessing because the pain pills put her in a better mood and make her a bit sleepy. She has a lampshade E-collar but absolutely hates it. Since she is obeying us on all other fronts to not jump, run and climb -- leash walks to do her business only -- we're not putting it on. She does sneak in a lick to the cut now and then but we tell her to stop and she does. She is so good like that, her sister Coco did not mind as well, she did as she pleased. (Taking a moment to remember the invincible CocoLion… may she rest in peace.)

The vet showed us an animation of the procedure. They cut about 3-4" on the inside of her left leg, around her knee. Then they cut the lower bone in half, and re-attached it with a plate and six screws. This gives the leg a new metal joint to replace her completely ruptured cruciate ligament. We saw XRays and she does have some arthritis and "not the greatest" hips but all in all, she's not a complete mess with advanced arthritis which was my fear. We have some quality glucosamine MSM supplements we'll start her on in a few weeks. Does anyone have any opinions or history using this for joint/osteo support in large dogs? She is 75 lbs and tall for a Lab.

Thanks to everyone who provided opinions to my initial thread about this procedure. Your encouragement and success stories were the deciding factor in convincing me to go ahead and get her leg fixed.
