As for is the same - most of my clothes were made in China and Indonesia. The few countries that very rare in my closet: Turkey, Thailand, Italy, Spain.
By the way, do you know about barcode scanners? A long time ago I had in memory a list of numbers in the beginning of the barcode that means the country of manufacture. Then I forget it and only a month ago I suddenly found the apk that allows us to read the barcode and recognize more the origin, but the company details, contacts, descriptions. Also it can check the online stores and show the items you scan and their related deals. Funny but it checks Amazon, eBay, Walmart etc! So fo me it was useful.
(I'm not sure that's available for Android, but for my Iphone I found it on the blog Theappsdepot, it called Barcode Scanner - We can show more than numbers! )

Sadly that you must have a new item with the label to scan it :)

A very ineresting question, Runcarla.
I checked my trousers, knitwear, sport gear, and looked through the clothes I keep on hangers. I left my tees alone, because refolding them would be too much work.
Most of my clothes were made in China, but the rest were sewn in a surprising number of other countries:
- Turkey
- Morocco
- India
- Romania
- Indonesia
- Portugal
- Bangladesh
- Thailand
- Italy
- Vietnam
- Tunisia
- Jordan
- Ukraine
I didn't expect to find a pair of trousers made in Jordan, and a skirt made in Ukraine in my closet.

Mine are made in NZ, Australia, Vietnam, Fiji and China.

I am pretty good at wearing my clothes often and getting the cost per wear down. I don't over shop. I try not to buy poor quality pieces or ones that I will tire of quickly - I am achieving these goals, BUT

While I am happy to buy imported clothes I want to know they have been made sustainably and using ethical practices. But I could do better in this regard. There are one or two retailers I avoid in total but there are others that I have not examined in great detail.

This is an excellent and important question which concerns me too. I always read labels and consider where things are made, but as others have pointed out, supply chains being what they are it's hard to be certain.

I have loads of basics from Uniqlo, which are almost universally made in China. This troubles me, but for me it's a trade off against quality and design. I've seen/heard reports that standards in China are improving quite rapidly, but pollution is still a problem.

I try to avoid goods from Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam.

I am a complete snob about shoes. Almost all are made in Italy, England or Germany, with a few from Spain and Portugal.

Wearing a favourite sweater today, made in Hong Kong about 10 years ago. Also own some Scottish, Guernsey and Peruvian knitwear. Agree with CWS/Linda/LBD about the quality.

I buy quite a bit from our local ateliers, who tend to manufacture in Poland, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. There are a few designers who make things here, but I don't much care for their clothes.

I'm a sucker for vintage and traditional pieces, which often have the provenance of local heritage/culture.

I don't put much stock on a Made in Italy label, but will pay through the nose for Made in Japan.

I have a jacket by Philip Lim and a pair of organic cotton jeans made in the USA, as well of a few bits and pieces from American Apparel.

I bought a lovely Armor-Lux shirt last year - made in France.

And all the things I make myself.

My go to designers here are Motto, Kathleen Berney, Lulu Manna, Shortlist Shop (ethically made offshore and designed in Aus) and for accessories House of Poly and Days of August!! I have spent a lot of time on this over the last 12 months xxx

Hi all, we get the same issues in NZ and Australia. So much of our stuff is made in China. I like to buy NZ made if I can, I do find some "designer" brands ( many of these are NZ designers that most of you won't know eg World) are just incredibly expensive eg one summer sundress I thought was gorgeous a few years ago was $500 - did not buy, did not even really consider.( I did try it on). So they are made here but how could a sundress, even of an attractive design and stiff floral cotton fabric, realistically be $ 500? To get my 20 wears I'm aiming for it would be $ 25 per wear. Unless I had almost no other dresses for the summer, it would be hard to get the 20 wears before being tired of it I feel, as it was quite distinctive. I do try to look at supply chains to reduce the risk of exploitation of workers, but sometimes I forget or get enticed by something...I found the info on the Australian Baptist World Aid report a bit helpful in that regard. https://baptistworldaid.org.au.....on-report/
I buy a couple of brands on sale that I love, one is Sabatini, made in NZ for decades and now very popular in Australia. Expensive, but have factory sales and website sales and take part in the Designer Garage Sale that we have at NZ Fashion Week. It is one of those brands where the stuff is high quality and generally lasts amazingly well. I have bought about 6 items in the past 5 years, all at deep discount. They are all loved and worn. I buy another brand called Magazine which covers size 10-22 at times ( I am size 14 NZ which I think is US size 10- we don't have sizes 0, 2 and 4, we start at 6 for adults which is probably your US size 2). So I can shop in that plus-size store even although not counted as plus size.

This is an interesting thread Carla. I am on the road right now so I can't go through my wardrobe. I have been trying for a number of years to buy clothing that is made well and will last a long time. I also try to buy pieces that are made by smaller companies that have a history of good labour practices. I have often bought from local artisans. I don't necessarily buy clothing that is made in Canada although if there is a choice I will. I am a strong supporter of Canada but I also see the world as one.
One of my Style Goals is to have clothing that reflects the above. Now that was a mouthful.

I used to try to buy all American made clothing in the 90's. It got harder each year. Every time I would find a brand I liked, it would move overseas. It was really frustrating. I looked through my last couple seasons. Vietnam was the leader, but there were a few bright spots.
Porto- San Francisco
Helmut- USA
RO- Italy
All my Nicholas K is made in China.

I mostly shop secondhand and vintage - and that is US, China, Hong Kong (I find vintage Hong Kong items to be uniformly of exceptional quality and construction). I find my new and newer items are generally from China, with the occasional Vietnam, or Sri Lanka thrown in.

I feel there would be nothing wrong with having clothing made overseas, if I could be certain that the textiles and construction were done in shops that pay close and careful attention to human rights, decent working conditions, and fair wages. And right now... there don't seem to be many clothing companies out there with that sort of transparency.

I will check out those links after this weekend (got a show) - going to bookmark them for right now. I would love to see this conversation continue!

I attempt to buy U.S. made clothing where available. I own a lot of Eileen Fisher, mostly because the quality is high and fit wonderful, but also because much of it is made in the U.S. or (also a factor) by environmentally responsible and worker-centered makers overseas. I own some great pieces by Emerson Fry, wholly made in the U.S.

I have family in Bolivia, Peru and Chile, and am familiar with the high quality to be found in artisan or small-factory cotton or woolen fabrics from that region. I look for opportunities to buy clothing made there. EF does this sometimes.

I'll start with the shout-out to the USA made things I can recall off the top of my head. My Chippewa boots, my James Perse tops, and my Babooshka tunic. I'm sure there are a few more, but that's all I can think of right now.

I have a fair number of Italian made shoes and clothes. Europe is fairly well represented in my wardrobe, because Yoox is one of my go-to sites for clothes. I also have stuff from far-flung corners of the globe: I have a wrap from Africa, a pair of shoes from Israel, a tunic from Bulgaria, and a ruana from Colombia. I have jewelry from Chickasaw Tribal artisans, and even though they're in Oklahoma--they are a sovereign nation.

I also have more than a few garments and shoes made in the usual suspect locations (China, Bangladesh, India, etc), as I have many mass retail brands in my closet. I am working towards being more mindful/intentional, and am beginning to try and order from smaller makers rather than companies that exploit human beings for profit. I've also started paying attention to the fiber content. My thing is trying to be mindful/ethical/etcetera while still wearing things that fit my aesthetic; sometimes that means buying a garment that wasn't made in USA. It's definitely got me buying less overall,

All of that said, I think global trade is about to get very weird. Tariffs on imported goods are going to cause the price of goods to rise, but it probably isn't going to be enough to make companies bring garment jobs back onshore. Even if it were enough to make companies want to reshore garment jobs, we don't have the people with those skills like we used to have. Also? Those tariffs imposed on imported goods are probably going to cause other countries to impose tariffs on American made goods, which isn't going to do American companies any favors. It's all about to get very weird. It's all weird enough and complicated enough that I think it's giving me a headache LOL

I can't go through my whole wardrobe right now, but what I'm wearing at the moment:

Patagonia hoodie -- India
Prana yoga tights -- Vietnam
American Apparel tee -- USA
Darn Tough socks -- Vermont! (USA)

50/50 -- not too bad.

I'm actually fine with wearing things produced abroad; what I find most troubling is the lack of transparency in labor and environmental practices so I'm trying to buy from producers who are openly committed to safe workplaces and a lower ecological impact. Right now, companies producing in the US have to adhere to relatively strict guidelines (OSHA, EPA, etc) but who knows if that will continue to be the case...

I haven't done an inventory but I am sure that the majority of my wardrobe is made outside Canada. I have some True Religion jeans made in the US. (I remember CocoLion was trying to buy all US for a while and that was one reason she went for that brand.) Danier jackets and a coat made in Canada. A Hilary Radley coat made in US. La Canadienne and Aquatalia boots made in Canada. I used to have a few Comrags items but those are gone now.

Pretty much everything else that isn't vintage is made in other parts of the world, because most of my purchases are from the chains -- BR, J. Crew, Zara. Points of manufacture include Turkey, Morocco, China.

runclara---i'm a huge believer in buying American and then buying from other democratic countries....that being said, i also want to clear up something,,,,a lot apparel made in the US (and i'm assuming Canada) is sewn there, but the fabric is manufactored somewhere else, in the US this is requried to be called out on the country of orgin label...ie made in USA of imported fabrics, not sure if this is the case in other countries. (and not to get political, but this is one of those pesky rules and regulations that gets abused alot, and when enforced, gets a lot of companies into hot water)https://makersrow.com/blog/201.....usa-label/ ....
another call out--i find most of my made in the US clothing in smaller local stores, so if you are only comfortable shoping in larger or chain stores, you may need to shop outside your comfort zone.

there are a lot of resourse out there to help find goods "made in the US"--not sure about canada etc, but i'll try googling it....anyway here are some of the US lists....(and always check the label --just because a company makes things in the US/Canada etc doesn't mean everything is)...
http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/13/.....n-america/
http://girlofacertainage.com/2.....-age-list/
http://girlofacertainage.com/2.....t-part-ii/

This is an exercise that would probably depress me. Years ago I made it a point to buy American. It bordered on the impossible. I eventually gave up. I do read blogs that discuss clothing lines that are made in the US and/or are sustainable. Perhaps there is a movement underfoot?

This is a great initiative as I like to support the local industry. The locally produced clothing in my wardrobe are from Cue and Moss and Spy - unfortunately that's it. There are other Australian designers, but most will get clothing manufactured in South East Asia, China and further afield.

I try to buy Italian as far as I can, but we are also invaded by garments made in China, Rumania and whatnot. I understand that the labor costs are much lower in those countries, but unfortunately the quality is often lower as well ....

While wondering if all the brouhaha over international trade and protectionism is going to impact the garment industry, I decided to go through my clothes, and discovered that only 3 items were made in North America. A silver foil t-Shirt (Joseph Ribcoff) and a pair of work trousers (Alfred Sung) - both Made in Canada, and a wool/cashmere pea coat ( Calvin Klein) - made in USA. Everything else was made in...

Sri Lanka
Jordan
Vietnam
Portugal
Philippines

Where are your clothes made? Please, give a 'shout out' to any designer or line of clothing that is made in the country where you live...
