I do love a handmade anything. The gift sandals were from a former East German friend whose mom was a seamstress. She has very strict ideas about quality and style. Also a horse person, so dressage has an influence, as well as beautiful Spanish booting. She is not rich, but has that air of fashion confidence that carries her through a lot of different situations. Inspiring.
The sandals will go on forever, they replace and rebuild, and it is a family affair.
Joy and Jaime, it is a deep pleasure to be seen and gifted with the right thing, is it not?
Sally, Indian women have often got closets of the most exquisite fabrics made up into sari lengths and scarves, yours must be quite special.

Nice sandals! Very classic. Look after them and they will go on forever.

I have a lot of stuff I’ve made myself. Dresses, tailoring, knitwear, there really is no substitute for that feeling of complete ownership. The down side is that I have a lot of trouble getting rid of homemade pieces, particularly those made by my late mother.

These days I am more interested in customizing, repurposing, and extending the life of the things I really love. There is always the niche for vintage pieces, which in recent years has joined hands with deconstruction. Yes, I agree, fashion is for youngsters, and it can be very frustrating. However, there comes a point beyond which there is no telling us what to do, because we know what we like. That’s personal style.

Lovely sandals. What a special gift. I haven't had anything made for me as an adult apart from getting a sari top and petticoat. When i was a child, one of my aunts was a tailor and she whipped up a couple of dresses for me when I went to stay with her. I loved them but didn't appreciate the concept at the time.

Olive Green, I don’t know. I had a good tailor and I valued her opinion because it was difficult as a young adult to come up with designs. I actually keep one of the dresses she made for me in 1995 in my closet for sentimental reasons. It is a navy polka dot midi A-line dress.

Roberta, went and looked up Nickersons. Makes me want to travel again. My first husband was also 6’6” and thin, he had a lot of clothes made in Delhi. Still wearing them.
Wedding dresses are so expensive and yet such a satisfying dream come true for many. Bet you looked amazing, Janet, with your height. Going off to check out Proper Cloth. Love a button down.
Irina, lucky you! Do you think it was an education in developing your own style to have such a range of choices? As opposed to trying to find a kindred soul designer at a decent price point?
That is really where I am going with this, I guess. I am tired of badly fitting stuff, as with age am increasingly intolerant of tight waistbands and plastic fabrics, at high prices, too.
Also, of course clothes seem to follow the young, and I have done micro mini and sausage fits, lol.
Looking for some longevity in clothes, too, as concerned about the waste factor in fast fashion.

Most of my clothes was made for me from age 15 and to my mid 30s due to very limited choices of sizes 0 or 00 and petite in retail at the time.
I would not mind a tailor made blazer or a semi-fitted button down shirt. But I no longer have access to such services in my price range.

Nice sandals!

The only thing I’ve ever had made for me is my wedding dress. I still have it but would have trouble fitting into it now. It’s been in a box for 19 years.

My husband has had many shirts made for him because he is very hard to fit off the rack. 6’6” and especially long in the torso. And he’s lanky, not a big guy. Most “tall” items are cut too wide for him. It’s hard but not impossible to find jeans for him (36” inseams are out there but sometimes even those are short). He’s most recently had really great experience ordering to his measurements with Proper Cloth.

I had a suit made for me about 20 years ago by Nickerman's (a US traveling tailor based in Bangkok), and it was AMAZING. It was a lovely experience, picking out the fabric and getting measured. I still have the jacket, but the suit was made of non-stretch fabric, and I eventually found the pants less comfortable and passed them on. The suit got worn a lot when I was working, and the jacket still looks immaculate. I picked a three season chocolate wool with a very subtle pinstripe. Dreamy.

My son had some shirts made for himself when he visited Thailand. They weren't very expensive and are a perfect fit.

I wonder if the tailors still come around the states or other countries? Nickerman's emailed me regularly for years, but they no longer make these tours. I have seen sites where you can customize a pant or skirt suit - based out of Thailand or Singapore.

Thanks, Star, Zee, and Angie, appreciate the feedback. But there goes my hope of someone volunteering a made to measure treasure, with a location map for the procurement of.
Too lazy to try the many options, and perhaps too cheap.
I love Zaeobi’s semi-homemade solution. Much less chance for measurements to wander off, with a template. Had the same experience from ordering from Hong Kong tailors online, just off somehow, whether fabric, colour, or fit.
And, the fit of the sandals is determined by a tracing of the feet, and a photo of how the foot rests on the floor. As well as some notations of any unusual features. Costs about what Nordstroms does for in-season sandals.
Now to find a boot maker.

Oh interesting - hope they stay comfy! How do they assess what your feet need (i.e. to make the shoes accordingly, I presume)?

I grew up with tailor-made clothing from South Asia, but these days I tend to get it readymade from there instead (I'm lucky that I fit into fairly standard sizes, though sometimes I'm a bit tall - which is laughable by Western standards, since I'm under 5ft4!) I usually wear those just in high summer though - stick to Western clothing for winter.

I'd say I currently occupy more of a 'colourful' territory like you too, though I don't know about 'minimalist' - I like my jewellery & scarves, lol. I'm thankful that my South Asian heritage taught me how to mix colours beyond just the usual 'black/ denim with everything' (nothing against those who dress like that btw! Just that it looks 'unfinished' on myself). And pulling colours from a scarf, as a third completer piece

As for custom pieces, I've had it go both ways - I've learnt it's better to go with 'half custom' tailoring (a pre-existing design but you supply the colours & measurements). Whenever I've asked for 'just a small change' to the design (like a curved hem instead of a straight one, or adding a peplum), it never ends up the way I imagined (even if I supply drawings of what I'm imagining!)

TL;DR: I've been burnt too many times, being told they 'absolutely' can customise something for me, only for it to be so small or unlike what we discussed that I just don't bother with the back & forth anymore. This is why I'm reluctant to try the world famous tailors/ seamstresses out here in Hong Kong, despite everyone saying I should. Even family-recommended ones elsewhere haven't gone well, so I'd rather buy something that's 'almost' right already, instead of trying the 'from scratch' route.

Maybe I'm just too fussy? And longwinded

My first new post!
Inspired by a very thoughtful gift from a friend: sandals specially made for my flat, low volume feet!
As a gear girl, I wear shoes and sandals out very quickly, and generally my going out in civilization shoe wardrobe is sparse.
These have a little padding, no bossy arch hump, and are adjustable. They are also pretty, yay! And RED.
When I was a kid, my mom sewed us outfits, very cute indeed. In Asia, had clothes made for me from fabric I got to pick out. Such a luxury.
And since then, just drifted off to basics and somewhat colorful minimalism, as not interested in more expressive clothes that do not fit right, with or without alteration. Just draws attention to the situation, ammiright?
So, anyone else have made to order clothes or accessories, where did you get such a thing, and how did the items work out?
Did you find yourself picking out more interesting colour and styles?
