You are right, Angie, it is the body shaper. I think they want people on TV to look a lot better, but when the people get home, they probably don't wear it except for special occasions.

Ana, you hit Clinton’s comment right on. He said if you get something off the rack that fits okay, then it may look fine, but it may look fabulous (his word) if you tailor it. I agree that you should buy the right size that needs the least altering. But I think certain body types might always require tailoring clothing to fit. My husband can’t buy a suit off the shelf. Every suit he has needs tailoring, so he now just buys custom suits. A lot of what I buy doesn’t need tailoring, but I can’t buy a 2 piece suit because it won’t fit my pear shape body.

I've read Stacy's advice to women on purchasing jeans, and she recommends that women get them tailored as well, so I know they really emphasize buying clothing and then having it altered to fit your body. I think clothing does look better when it's tailored, and it is great if you LOVE the item and a just a small alteration would make it look fabulous. Otherwise, I just don't buy the item, because I know if it's not something I'm dying to wear, it will just sit in my closet and I'll never get it done. I've heard Stacy say that basically, you should buy clothing expecting to have it altered, which I'm not sure I agree with unless you have a difficult to fit body and getting your clothes altered makes you feel great in them.

It's probably a body shaper Eva, like Spanx. Most of my clients are uncomfortable in them, but they will persevere for special occasions. Few wear them every day and I can’t imagine it working in hot weather.

It’s interesting that so much is tailored for the WNTW show. I’d have not assumed that.

He did seem very nice and down to earth.

Maya, check out events on Macy's web page. and put in your city. I saw that Clinton will be in NY, NY for a HER (plus) size fashion show in May. Maybe there is a petite show will follow later or he will be a location in traveling distance.

You are right about the pant lengths on WNTW. I just watched a show and the pant length was fine.

He also mentioned his key things a women should have or do:
1. Get a bra fitting - every women on the show gets one even if they don't show it.
2. Clothes need to be tailored - almost everything is tailored on the show
3. I'm not sure what this one is called....get a body fitter. Like a modern girdle. It is more comfortable than the older girdles. I don't have one, maybe one of the members knows what this is.

Angie, he also mentioned if your skin is bad, don't match the color, it will make you look worse. This at least makes sense.

I love that book. I don't think I would actually buy it, but I always browse through it in the bookstore. The only thing I wish they would have done differently is show multiple outfits for each "mode" of dress. The petite-curvy model wore a pinstripe suit for the office look, and she looked great, but not all or even most women are probably in a position where they need a suit. It would have been helpful to see a business casual look as well, and more about dresses since supposedly curvy girls were built for dresses.

I’m non-negotiable on pant lengths and “the capri look”. Clinton and I will agree to disagree. Stacy London wears black capris in their WNTW book which I find a great pity because it’s a super book.

Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lopez have perfect skin. They wear colours close to the colour of their complexions and it absolutely works. I see Clinton’s point

aww man, I wish I had been there. I love Clinton and I'm petite!

But I have to say I don't agree with him on everything. I find that length of capris awkward on just about everyone, and wearing a color close to your skin tone just washes you out or makes you look naked (I just realized that's what Ana wrote). I don't know if he really means half an inch off the ground or if he's just giving a ballpark number. None of the women on WNTW seem to have a problem with pants length (after the makeover, obviously).

Clinton seems sweet and has a good sense of humor. He's right about all the important things.

This is super Eva! I' m so sorry I had to miss it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Clinton Kelly is superb on WNTW and he oozes charm and charisma. It sounds like he made quite an impression and that’s fab. Clinton and I seem to be in 90% agreement (*chuckle*). I echo your feeling on your favourite comment. And don’t get me started on fleece wearing Seattleites…I have a lot of work to do.

That was interesting, Eva. Thanks for sharing! I agree with most of his advice, although, if I wear tops close to the color of my skin, I just look washed out and naked from far away.

I thought I would share with you my experience at Macy’s petite fashion show hosted by Clinton Kelly (from TLC’s What Not to Wear). This was not a vogue fashion show. This was a show for the average person. For those of who you watch What Not to Wear, Clinton Kelly’s personality is the same as on the show. He was funny, witty and dealt out a lot of fashion advice.

The colors in the show were red, yellow, green and pink with neutrals in black, white and brown/tan. There were very pretty dresses, tops, skirts, pants and walking shorts. Pant colors came in white, cream and light grey and were matched with pretty colorful blouses. Jackets were both structured and swing style in bright colors and neutrals.

A sampling of Clinton’s comments or answers to questions:

How you look will define how you think of yourself and determine how people will treat you.

Do not wear athletic shoes or sweats out of the house except when at the gym. Do not wear “mommy” jeans. Do not wear fleece unless you are going for a hike - thinks more people wear fleece in Seattle, than anywhere else. Angie, wouldn’t you agree?

Elongate the legs elongate the neck and you appear taller.

In answer to the question, can you dress trendy if you are of a “certain age,” he said yes, combine a trendy piece with a classic, such as a trendy top with a classic pants.

Dresses/skirts for petites should end above the knee or just at the knee.

Capri pants are okay if they hit just below the fat part of the calf (not an Angie advice).

Pant lengths should be ½ inch above the ground (not an Angie advice).

If you have great skin, show it off by wearing tops close to your skin color. The eye will be drawn to your skin.

My favorite comment: Do not compare yourself to anyone else, especially the models that you see on billboards or in magazines that have long flowing hair, beautiful eyes, sparking teeth, perky breasts and legs that go on for ever. That is the magic of Photoshop, hair extensions, veneers, implants, contact lenses and legs that are a freak of nature. They are not real. Love who you are.

I was impressed that he was speaking to the average person, not above them. He pointed out his own figure faults to show that he was not perfect either (by any means!). The key is to wear clothes that hide your imperfections and emphasize your assets.

I had a lot of fun watching the fashion show AND watching the crowd. Some of whom dressed horribly for the occasion. I did not stay after the show to get an autograph or shop. I did not win the $500 shopping spree.
