How many "designs" are actually "designed" by one designer though? I am skeptical. There must be certain reasonably generic handbag designs that are not traceable to one person's brain. And I for one resent thousands in premium for a label. I personally find it immoral. I realise that I am showing my strict Presbyterian upbringing there and there will be many here who disagree, I'm just telling you what I think. I also would not want a great big Chanel or Gucci label showing on my clothing even if I didn't resent the cost. I hate fakes even more because that's just stealing.

FashIntern....yes factories will often produce higher end and lower end....but here's the other thing, ...and as companies have seen time and time again, even with the best controls many factories sub contract, so it becomes hard to tell were something was actually made (as witnessed in the Bangladesh fire a few years ago). so if you sign up for this, who is really insuring that you are getting what you signed up for

Anyone who knows more about the industry than I do, please correct me if necessary.
My understanding is that factories often take orders from multiple companies, at different points on the quality scale. The article mentions the craftsmanship that goes into high-end labels, but that seems a pretty thin promise. I don’t mean that they’ll suddenly start sewing crazy crooked seams, but surely on the way to doing something well, one also learns how to cut corners. At the factory level, an easy corner to cut would be quality control.

Shevia, my thoughts exactly! If I’m looking for high-quality craftsmanship without paying a huge markup for a logo, I’m thinking I’ve better odds of finding it in those lesser-known labels, or from from new, or independent, designers. Using “luxury” branding as the “hook” to stimulate reverse snobbery is rather ironic—but it’s the “craftsman” appropriation which really gets me. These are huge factories which manufacture a host of different lines for a variety of different brands. It’s a very clever marketing approach, but I think I’d rather be an investor than a “member”. At the rate people are signing up, I’d be able to buy that Celine bag before too long!

Sigh, I’m such an old cynic...

I am also skeptical and Gaylene articulated it better than I could. As things currrently stand, there are many, many Chinese businesses based on the same principle as a glance around AliExpress will reveal. It is quite possible to get a high quality bag for less right now, made in Italy from a lesser known label. And it is quite possible that a bag can be identified by other than its label and still enjoy reverse snobbery snobbery cache.
So, to date myself, where's the beef (aka leather)?

I’’ll admit I was confused about this idea because the article lead Roberta quoted seemed to fall into that “too-good-to-be-true” category. Obviously the factories involved couldn’t be duplicating the luxury designs since that would lead to copyright battles, as well as the loss of the luxury brand’s business. But, after thinking about it, it finally dawned on me that this was another spin on the very lucrative “Direct-to-Consumer” marketing platform which is flooding the internet. In D2C marketing, a company manufactures, markets, and distributes their own products without using middlemen, a process which enables them to reduce costs and interact directly with consumers.

Italic’s spin seems to rest solely on its D2C software platform and its (unverified) claim of a stable of unnamed factories who have manufactured “luxury” goods in the past. Jeremy Cai, Italic’s founder, is up front about the fact that, unlike traditional D2C companies like Warby Parker and Casper who both manufacture the product and sell it directly to the consumer, Italic won’t be involved in the designing and manufacturing of the items—or even be actually purchasing the inventory Italic will be marketing to its “members”. From what I’m reading, “product designers” at the (mainly Chinese) factories will be left alone to create and manufacture items and, for a commission, Italic’s role will be to just provide the software platform to market products to its “members”. It’s interesting, too, that members have to pay $120/year for the “privilege” of being able to see the items advertised—a sign of “exclusivity”?

Italic promises it will have its own inspection process, but I’d read the disclosure on the website very carefully since quality concerns, shipping mishaps, refunds, and returns might not be handled in the same way as more conventional e-commerce transactions from a store or brand name. You are buying your unbranded product from a factory in another country—and product and customer service expectations might hold some surprises. As well, factories who sign up are under no obligation to use their “luxury” brand level of materials or specifications to create Italic products.

What really fascinates me, though, is that, in just a few days, over 15,000 people have put their names on Italic’s waiting list, and are anxious to purchase a $125 membership before any products have actually been shown or even produced. Apparently just the aura of a connection to a “luxury” brand and the thought of a “bargain” is enough to get investors and consumers salivating.

You want the same exact high-quality materials, the same meticulous craftsmanship, similar designs. The only thing that is missing is the big logo. If you paid the bag maker fairly for the materials and the labor, the bag would run you about $250, which is a tiny fraction of a $4,000 tote you would pick up at a Celine boutique.
