Hi Ana! I love talking about pefume :)

I'm glad you like Bulgari Omnia I lost most of the contents of my mini bottle in an incident that involved pliers and a lot of force (have you seen their bottles? it's a very peculiar design), but I may have a tiny bit left. I'm tempted to go looking for it now.

I haven't tried CB I Hate Perfume yet. I'm definitely interested in what Christopher Brosius comes up with, I don't always like his stuff from Demeter, but he's also interesting. By the way, you mentioned "In the library" and I remembered about Paul Smith's edt for men "Story". The notes don't sound very exciting, but the packaging is absolutely adorable: the bottle is shaped like a book. http://photos1.blogger.com/blo.....tory.0.jpg
It's available at online discounters, but I try not to buy unsniffed. And I already have similar things anyway. Hmm, maybe I could obtain an *empty* bottle ;-)

I don't organize my perfume notes very well at all. I have a growing master list of perfumes I'd like to sample (mostly picked from reviews in perfume blogs). I write down the name, perfumer's name, and a short note to help me remember why I picked it in the first place. Or if there are several versions, I write down which one is supposed to be sweeter or heavier. I color code (in color blue, just like visited links in old browsers ) the ones I tried, but never erase anything. I don't write down my impressions because I rely on my memory (I don't have a terribly long list, so far it works). When I sample, I go back to reread the reviews and compare impressions.

I organize my samples by perfume house or fragrance family. When I have several samples from the same family, I try them on consecutive days. And I try to give each sample at least two chances.

I haven't sampled Diorella - it sounds very interesting.

I have a bit of a problem with Fracas, too. I generally like tuberose in small doses (such as Diptyque's Do Son, by the way Diptyque is another line I like). Unfortunately Fracas reminds me of uhm, excuse me, air freshener in public restrooms at my university. I have pretty good smell memory, and I just can't get rid of this association. I also know what you mean about a weird grass smell.

Before I forget, one of my favorite perfumes is Eau de Merveilles by Hermes. I have the edt for summer and the parfum for fall/winter (I scored it at a major sale last year, I stalked it for the longest time). It's my no-brainer fragrance when I can't decide on anything else. It's orange, pepper, woods, vetiver and something what people call slightly "boozy" and earthy. Yum.

I also like powdery florals on other people. I hugged somebody at a Thanksgiving party and she smelled incredible. I totally forgot to ask what she was wearing (I was a little spaced out from being sick).

Ana, I have a question for you. I'm reluctant to wear perfume on my body (except wrists), how do you wear it on clothes? Does it stain? I'm not committed to one scent, so it makes things more tricky. I've been thinking about using a bit on my hair.

Thanks for the great response Lena! This is so fun talking perfume. :D

I got my samples in the mail today! I'm so excited.

I tried on the "1270" by Frapin first. This smells exactly like "Angel" on me, but without the chocolate note. It listed the notes as: exotic woods, spice, raisin, vine flowers, pepper, candied orange, nut, hazelnut, prune, cocoa, coffee, leather, woods, white honey, vanilla. I was expecting the deeper, mossier leather and woods base to come through, but it just never did. I put it on 4 hours ago, and it's just sweet sweet sweet. Perfumes have an annoying habit of just turning really sweet and cloying on me, so I have to be careful with orientals and other vanilla based scents--they need to be spicy, but not bitter. The L'Artisan scents you recommended sound perfect--I will definitely add those to my "sample" list. I like powdery florals on other people, but not me. Again, they just turn into super sweet baby powder scents--blech. The "1270" is a nice scent though--I'd recommend at least giving it a try, because it might not do the same thing on you that it did on me. If it had deepened at all and developed that leather and woods smell, it would have been pretty interesting, I think. Lasts a long time, too--I can't even wash the stuff off entirely!

I know you're not supposed to mix perfumes, but I tried on the "Escentric 01" by Escentric Molecules on my other wrist, and it smells nice! It's so weird in the bottle--I swear it smells like Windex! But when you put it on it's soft and just a tiny bit tangy and spicy. It disappears, too! It gets really faint....I'm waiting for it to come back (I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will). The reviews on Lucky Scent said that it disappears and then comes back sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't come back.....It just came back! Yay! I might have to get a bottle of this stuff. I want to see what it does. I think I will wear this one out tomorrow. It's starting to turn kind of peppery on me.

I still haven't developed my chypre taste yet--to me it just smells dank and bitter. I haven't smelled a lot of it though. Vetiver I can take in small doses. I tried "Hindu Grass" by Nasomatto. The opening almost burned my nose, but the dry down warmed up and was quite nice.

http://www.luckyscent.com/shop.....;section=1

It doesn't list vetiver as an ingredient, but it does remind me of vetiver scents. To me, it does smell more masculine than a unisex fragrance would, but I do think it's wearable. I think it would be a nice Spring scent, and on a man, it would be divine. I will search out that Vetiver scent by Guerlain that you recommended. I don't mind wearing men's fragrances--I sometimes prefer their spiciness and depth to a lot of women's perfumes I've come across. I ordered the Jubilation XXV, which apparently is the "men's" version of the fragrance (but I didn't know that, I just went by the notes they listed). It smells nice in the bottle, I will probably try that one tomorrow evening and let you know!

I wore the Bulgari "Omnia" today and I really like it. It wears very close to the skin. I spray my cami and the back of my hair with perfume, because I have very sensitive skin, so wearing it directly on my skin everyday will give me hives. For testing purposes though, I usually test a little on my wrist to get a better sense of how it will change. It was kind of windy today, so when the wind blew I would get a whiff of perfume that really nice! Much nicer than what I normally smell (street, college kids, the bus, etc). I am adding that to my "to buy" list because it's pretty affordable as far as perfume goes. I will probably only get a small bottle because my tastes sort of change frequently when it comes to perfume as well. I'd want to use it all up before it goes off. It actually lasted about 6 hours on me, and my cami still smells softly of it.

I tried the Miss Dior Cherie on yesterday, and it was too sweet for me. I smelled like candy. Oh--speaking of Dior scents--have you tried "Diorella" yet? I got a small sample of the EDT in another order I placed, and it is wonderful! Very tangy, but still warm. I want to get my hands on a larger bottle of it. I found a couple places online that carry it, and it's not prohibitively expensive. Plus, it's available in a smaller bottle size. If you haven't tried it, see if you can track down a sample. I highly recommend it. I can appreciate most vintage fragrances for what they are, but I find almost all of the ones that I've tried (not too many yet), to be unwearable on me. It's that "stuff turning sweet and cloying" thing. Take a heavy, rich perfume, and mix in a huge batch of sugary vanilla honey--it's a recipe for disaster. I tried "Fracas" on the other day, because the opening that I sprayed on a tester strip was so lovely. It was okay for about 30 minutes, and then it turned absolutely rank on me, like synthetic grass smell mixed with baby powder. I thought I would vomit. I desperately tried to wash it off me, but I was stuck with it for another hour. Yuck! Chanel No. 5 and most Creed scents do the same thing--synthetic, heavy and weirdly metallic sweet.

I do notice how scents are different on different people (well, see above, hee). I know some "perfume experts" say this isn't true, but I just can't believe that, because something can smell terrible on me, but great on someone else. I also know what you mean about perfumes smelling like someone else. My mom always wore "Caleche" by Hermes, and I like it, but whenever I wear it, it smells like "her perfume" you know? I feel like I'm wearing my mom's perfume, rather than my own. I'm sure I'll appreciate it someday when I get older though. :)

Have you tried any of the CB I Hate Perfume scents yet? Lucky Scent doesn't have any samples, but there is supposedly a place here in town that carries them. I really want to smell, "In the Libary."

Also, I never thought about keeping a notebook, but I can see how that would be useful. I could easily get confused about what I had tried, and what I thought about it. How do you organize your notes? What do you write?

This is so fun!

(I'm sorry, this is getting long)

Hmm, what else. I also like sandalwood, herbaceous scents, smoky spicy scents, rose compositions (I like the Parfums Rosine line), and last but not least, weird/crazy combinations (like L'Artisan's Voleur de Roses: roses and patchouli, smells like rose petals in wet dirt. Or Coco Mademoiselle - prickly darkness and sweetness). Not a big fan of overly sweet florals or very sweet spices, but never say never! I adore Shalimar by Guerlain, but from a distance. It's citrus, dark spices, rich vanilla. I'd love to try a parfum concentration one day - supposedly its best version. I'm also on a mission to sample Dior's classic scents. Sometimes I try powder florals like Kenzo Flower just for kicks. I'm currently obsessing over the iris note and I'm planning to order some samples next year.

If you're sampling from Luckyscent, I'd highly recommend the L'Artisan line. I don't even know where to start, there's something for everyone. My favorites: Tea for Two is a unique spicy tea, delicious and unisex. Also Figuier (fig) and Timbuktu (spices). Their compositions are so interesting and beautiful. The only downside is that their scents don't last long on most people, but you never know, you may be the lucky one. Or it can actually work for your advantage if you like perfume that stays close to your skin and doesn't last a whole day.

I tried something by Parfumerie Generale, but I don't have access to my notes right now and I don't remember which one I tried. Good luck, I hope you like them! Miss Dior Cherrie is supposed to be a nod to classic Miss Dior (a chypre, btw), I wasn't impressed by it at all. Most Burberry perfumes are a bit of a blur for me - I remember I liked something with sandalwood, but found most of them too sweet in the drydown (last stage).

Please keep me posted on how you like Jubilation by Amouage. I'd like to try it one day.

Hi Ana! Hee, I'll try to keep this short and concise and not dissertation length

Bulgari Omnia is a lovely scent - I had a mini. Actually Bulgari was one of the first lines I investigated after getting bitten by the "perfume obsession" bug. Unfortunately it doesn't last long on me, and my nose and skin chemistry don't always work with the Bulgari line. Speaking of skin chemistry, did you notice how the same scent can work differently throughout the month? And how the same scent can work on one person, but not another? For example, most Chanels don't develop well on me (except Coco Mademoiselle, one of the few sweet scents I like).

I own several Bulgaris: green tea, Black (very interesting scent, Sephora sometimes has it in the men's section; most people smell burnt rubber and spice and vanilla, my nose normally smells only vanilla), BLV mini (sweet ginger somethingrather). I hardly ever reach for BLV anymore - it's something I got "early on" and I think my nose has moved on That's why I'm reluctant to commit to full bottles of anything, my taste changes and develops over time. Green tea however is a classic fresh scent (with nothing green tea like about it, imo), great for hot weather.

I know what you mean about different scents for different seasons and times of day. AND for different clothes! Absolutely! I started playing around with this recently: juxtaposing menswear with feminine scents, and wearing more masculine scents with flirty dresses and skirts. I especially like wearing vetiver based men's scents in the summer (well, either vetiver or fig (Diptyque Philosykos and L'Artisan Figuier)). Vetiver is one of my favorite notes - it's used as a base for tons of perfumes, both men's and women's. I'm not very clear on what exactly vetiver is - I think it's a root, or a grass. If you want to try a perfume that's considered a very classic vetiver, try Guerlain Vetiver for men (it's available everywhere). OMG, I'm drooling just thinking about it. It's my mission to sample as many vetivers as I can, and this one is my benchmark. It can be offputting at first sniff, but don't be alarmed. It starts out citrusy, goes through a floral/fruity stage (not always), and ends smoky and fresh and just perfect. At least for my taste. And I adore the bottle (I have a full one). And you know, all this distinction between feminine and masculine - I don't care. There are great finds on both sides of the aisle.

I adore chypre perfumes. Chypre is not a note, but a weird combination of things, and frankly, all the definitions I've seen are murky and not very clear. It's not very popular on the main market right now, but sort of making a comeback, and it's in a lot of old classics. The best way I can describe it - deliciously prickly and greenish. First time I tried something chypre based (24 by Hermes, Aromatics Elixir by Clinique, and Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel) - I thought I would keel over from pain in my sinuses And now they are favorites. Unfortunately 24 is a tricky beast and only rarely develops well on me. But when it does - it's glorious. Aromatics Elixir is my comfort scent (I think I'm one of the lucky ones whose skin chemistry works with it (still, in small doses)).

Chypre also reminds me of one of my grandmothers. Speaking of associations, I can't wear Lancome Poeme or actually any Lancome scent. Poeme reminds me of several women I used to know (not in a bad way, just that it feels like them) and something in the Lancome base doesn't work for me. I really like what Guerlain has to offer (especially their older pefumes), but again, their base doesn't always work on me.

Lena, I'm finding that the more research I do on perfumes, the more interested I'm getting in them, also from an analytic standpoint. I'm interested in the notes and the history and all that, even if it's not a scent I think I would wear. Thanks for the link, too! That was a very interesting article. I've had similar experiences to the author. Nordstrom is great with samples, but our local Nordstrom has a limited selection of perfumes (I've at least smelled almost all of them). Their online selection is much larger. Neiman Marcus practically pushes samples on me every time I go in, but it seems to almost always be a Creed scent (I have yet to find a Creed scent I liked). I hadn't ever tried asking for samples at Sephora, since I never really associated them with perfume, but I had a look at their selection today and it's pretty good. I got samples of Bulgari Omnia, Miss Dior Cherie, Burberry London, Nina by Nina Ricci and Valentino Rock and Rose. I sprayed the Nina Ricci scent on my wrist because I really liked the opening on the scent strip, but it didn't last long and then mellowed into a caramel apple smell. It's not bad, but it's a bit sweeter than I really like to wear, so I probably won't be using the sample I got.

I was on the search for a Holy Grail fragrance that I would want to wear all the time, but now that I have done a lot of research, I think I'm more interested in finding a few different scents to wear at different times of the year. What smells good in the heat of summer here isn't necessarily something I would want to wear when the weather gets cooler. Plus, other things about my look tend not to change (hair, makeup), so I think it would be fun to play around with perfume. I'm still trying to find at least one that Brendan and I both like though (it turns out we're both really picky!). And I'm trying to get Brendan to wear some cologne (I LOVE it when a man is wearing a nice scent). He's still hesitant, but I think I'm wearing him down, heh.

I've only ordered samples from Lucky Scent so far, but I've been pretty happy. I tried Narcotic Venus by Nasomatto. I like that one, Brendan is "eh" about it. This time around I ordered samples of Jubilation XXV by Amouage, 1270 and Terre de Sarment both by Frapin, Escentric 01 by Escentric Molecules, A la Figue! by Satellite, Musc Maori, L'eau de Circe, and Psychotrope all by Parfumerie Generale. The last three are wild cards, I'm not sure if I will like them at all, but it's fun to sniff something new.

What sort of scents do you like and wear? Smelled anything interesting lately?

Oh Ana, perfume is another obsession of mine. I'm interested in perfume from an almost analytical perspective, and I don't search for that one perfect scent. Instead, I have a growing collection of samples and very small bottles. There's so much variety and incredible creations (from simple to intricate to weird and crazy) in the world of perfume - it makes me happy to sample and discover new things. Occasionally I do splurge on a small full bottle :)

Basenotes is a very good resource. I've never ordered from Luckyscent (not that I can remember), but have from others. This blog article about obtaining samples is a good resource, too:

Hi Everyone!

I'm still on my quest to find a perfume that Brendan and I both like and that doesn't set off his allergies (it's posing quite a challenge). In doing research online I came across this website http://www.luckyscent.com. It has a large selection of perfumes, some that are difficult to find elsewhere, and many users write nice, detailed reviews of the perfumes, which is very helpful. Also, they sell samples of most of the perfumes they offer. The samples cost $3-$4 a vial, depending on the price of the perfume. The only drawback is that the vials are a bit smaller than a sample you would get at a department store. But it's nice having access to scents that just aren't available here in Austin. I know some of you are in smaller towns and cities, and in a similar situation. I just wanted to recommend the site for any of you who might be interested. I've ordered samples from them in the past, and I made an order today and used the promotion code MUA for free shipping (usually $3.00).

Also, http://www.basenotes.net is great for factual information about perfumes and the perfume industry, and also user reviews of scents (you can search their comprehensive database alphabetically). They maintain a pretty active forum on the site as well.

Anyway, just fyi.
