I saw that The New Yorker review called this movie "insipid." I heartily disagree. I thought it was pure fun.

Yes, Mochi -- very similar in story to The Commitments. (Sing Street is by the same filmmaker who did Once, if you've seen that one.)

And I should have also mentioned -- to keep things relevant to YLF -- that it's very funny how the kids in the film keep changing their looks to reflect what the musicians of the day (The Cure, Adam Ant, Duran Duran) were wearing.

It sounds like a lot of fun. And I do like me a good Irish story! :)

It kind of reminds me of The Commitments (Roddy Doyle), generally around that time frame, except there were I think two girls in that band, and they were doing R & B.

DH and I just returned from seeing Sing Street, indie film about a group of Irish schoolboys in 1985 who put together a band to try and impress a girl.

Caution to anyone who is sensitive to such: there are some scenes of Catholic-school bullying.

But in general, a fun romance with tons of 80s music and videos. (Remember how important the music videos were in those days? The film really captures that aspect of the era.)
