You could try painting an accent wall, that's what I did. I mostly chose to do this because I live in an apartment, and will have to repaint the painted walls when I move out. I didn't want to have to repaint everything. One of my walls is citron, and another wall is olive green, and my carpets are beige, but I want to get a nice colorful rug and I have red and dark brown accents like pillows and stuff--kind of a modern "nature" theme.

Maya I'm very happy to hear that you are on your way to a design career. And Maya and Nicole thank you for the help in choosing a color to paint my walls, I love the squinting idea for colors to pop out. Also it is good to hear that a creamy white is better than a stark white. Sage, or any green is also one of my favorite colors. I've been considering either a light sage or a creamy color. It is tempting to get carried away with the color on the walls but, do I understand this correctly, that the rugs are already saturated with color so I should not go so saturated with color on the walls?
Sorry this is off topic from YLF but I am so grateful for this info.

I'm also a red lover. However I find that having too much red makes it lose it's punch so I try to not do too much of it.

I used to have no red in my wardrobe, but I've slowly been introducing it since I came to this site. I realize red can function as a neutral and looks especially good with lighter neutral shades--black, white, tan, etc. Adds some interest. I really like olive green and red (it has to be olive or else it looks a bit Christmas-y), and red and citron or yellow.

I went through a phase once where all my clothes (except jeans) were orange. Orange is my favorite color, and luckily it's a good color on me, but I realized it was kind of ridiculous. But I'm really drawn to any colors that have an orangy tint to them (hence my love of coral right now).

San, pick up a color wheel either at your local paint store, Home Depot, or buy a color wheel idea book at a bookstore. You will find this tool incredibly helpful, both in decorating and dressing around red. On a color wheel, green is opposite red--so you can actually pair green with red very well (most people are afraid to do this because they fear it will look Christmassy). You just have to find the right shades. Next to red on a color wheel are pink and orange--so those are complimentary colors.

Another trick (if you're trying to pick colors from another object -- like your rug), is to look at the rug with your eyes squinty. What color jumps out at you ? (besides the red)...that would be a good choice to paint your walls.

I love red too--but probably don't wear it as often as I should--but I just got back from a morning walk and realized I'm wearing red! Maybe I'll look for something red to wear today in honor of this thread!

PS to Maya...my you ARE a night owl!

Well, I am on my way to a design career, so I'm very happy to hear that! I find that the same color combinations that work for fashion design might not work for interior design or graphic design. There are different issues at play.

Also keep in mind that I'm part Indian, so making seemingly strange color combinations is practically in my genes! On the other hand, I grew up in a very color-deprived house. I think I mentioned my dad is a math teacher, which means he has absolutely no mind for art/design...and he made some atrocious choices as far as the house goes. He finds color "fussy" so everything is neutral. Our walls are stark optic white and the carpet is a horrible dingy oatmeal color that doesn't seem to look good with anything. In the kitchen our tiling is different shades of gray, wood, and steel. No color at all. So I made my room a colorful oasis, away from all that.

So I'd be thrilled if my dad had your taste. I think if your rooms have a lot of color in the furniture and accessories, the wall color should stay fairly neutral. Not the optic white that my dad chose, but a creamy, warm white or taupey/beige color. Even a very light sage green could be pretty, but you'd have to get the color exactly right. Having a neutral wall will make everything in the room stand out more.

Your room sounds really beautiful. I am very interested in what you say here about what goes with the color red because I am in the delima right now of deciding what color to paint the walls in my house to go with the red/burgandy carpet. These are really 3 huge rugs over hard wood floors, so the colors in the rug pattern also come into play.
Maya from what I read on this site you seem to have a very naturally good eye for style and color and could use that in a career if you wanted to. Lucky you!

I love red too. My room is a very pale milkshake pink with a dark rosey red accent wall. I have red bedsheets too. And 4 red purses. Red is my favorite color to wear because I feel like it brings all the right tones from my skin. I even used to get my hair highlighted with red henna, but the woman who did it for me moved away and I can't find anyone else who just does highlights.

I've been introducing colors that look good with red into my wardrobe to make it stand out even more. My favorites are yellow and turquoise, but red really does go with everything as long as the shade is right. I really like shades of blue with red, as long as they're not flag colors, which looks cheesy. Colors that are from the red family also work. I love corals, orange, and deep reddish pinks as well.

I thought I'd start a thread on the color red because I too am a red lover. The carpets in my house are red. I love red clothing and furniture and just about anything in the right shade of red or burgandy, even a lighter rose color. The trouble is we can't have everything red. That's a problem for me. I guess I want to share what I read in a home design book once, something to the effect that your eye needs a break from the red in the room. If everything in the room was red it would be overwhelming.
This conversation stemmed from a gal here who wanted a pair of sandals in the red color but thought she already had so much red in her wardrobe that she should probably choose another color. It's hard to do but sometimes we red lovers have to pick a complimentary color to it so the eye can have a rest from all that beautiful red. Too much of a good thing. Just a thought.
