I mostly stay in whatever clothes I am wearing that day - occasionally something like jeans will get uncomfortable at the end of the day. In that case, I have a pair of black yoga pants that I wear, with a tank or t-shirt on top.

I wanted to send a thank you to all the posters on this particular topic, but I especially wanted to give a shout out to Mo and Shiny. I took your advice. I checked out the bandeaus and although they looked incredibly comfortable, I decided not to purchase one at that time. I wear a sports bra in the townhouse that although not flattering seems to suffice for the time being.

Shiny, I went to investigate modal lounge wear (black bottoms and tank tops). They were wonderful!!!! I purchased two black bottoms that seem to have a dressy feel to them (in my mind) and two tank tops (adorable!!). I assure you that these two outfits are a major step up for me in terms of lounging. I can't thank you enough.

I used to be a big fan of loungewear. Now I've banned it except in the winter when I also sleep in it (sweats and hoodies); it gets cold in my home without heating just a space heater although next year I get a wood burning stove. Ahh the joys of renovating on the boyfriend plan.

I don't do loungewear any more because I need to wear my clothes! I have lots of cute casual clothes, and they are comfortable enough. Especially the boyfriend jeans and stretchy skinnies. I now get dressed when I get up, including a bra and sunscreen. I used to lounge in loungewear until I started work at 3pm. Now, by dressing earlier and changing again for work, I feel like my day is longer.

I usually swap my jeans for yoga pants at the end of the day. Likewise any dressier cardigan or jacket comes off and is replaced with an old cardigan or zipped hoodie.
Bra always stays on but shoes and jewellery are removed. I wear slippers but they are a plain moccasin-style so not obvious when I answer the door or collect the mail.

I have to chuckle a little bit when I think about this, because I get into trouble some mornings if I linger in my PJs too long (I usually do the coffee, breakfast, dog-feeding routine before showering and getting ready for the day). We live in a contemporary home down a long driveway in the woods -- it's very private, until someone pulls up in front of the house, because we have lots of windows! So when I glimpse someone coming (yard workers, delivery people), I have to do a quick duck and cover and scoot upstairs to change before they come to the front door, where they could easily see me in all my pajama'd glory!

I usually do change when I get home, depending on what I wore for the day. Usually I just put on shorts or old jeans and one of my old graphic tees, or maybe PJ pants (they are like Shiny's so they look like yoga pants). Sometimes if it's just me and my husband at home, I'll take off the bra, but if anyone else is here (stepson, etc.), I keep it on.

Once I get home from work, I usually change into jeans and a tee or sweater in the cooler months, or shorts and a tee in the warmer months. Like you, I'm a messy cook and don't want to ruin my decent clothes. However if we're having guests, I will be more dressed up.

I am a SAHM, usually wear casual clothes that I can run errands in, go to the park, playground, mall or playdates with friends and still look presentable.. Some summer days we spend at the pool, then it's a bathing suit and sundress. Other than that, denim shorts (short shorts or bf shorts) and cotton tees or tank tops. In cooler months, I wear a lot of leggings, skinny jeans and sweterdresses, both home and out. Typical loungewear, like PJs, only right before bed or when I'm sick...

Like Suz, I work from home 80% of the time and finally realized I need to dress nicely, for me. I always wear makeup and try to look tidy most days, so if I have to run out, I am presentable.

I still wear yoga pants occasionally but can never go braless :)

I do find casual harder to dress, my 'in the office' clothes are nicer and I feel more put together in them.

I am in Mo's position. I work from home, so if I wore loungewear at home I'd be wearing it all the time! I'm a fan of aprons, and washable clothes, as a result. I cook a lot, but I'm a careful cook, and my husband (who does the laundry) is very good at dealing with stains. Lucky for me.

I DO aim for comfortable clothing at home. Jeans, shorts (in hot weather) and easy tops. When I go out I will top with a jacket.

I often leave accessories off at home, apart from simple stud earrings. I will put them on before going out. DItto footwear.

This is an ongoing struggle for me. I commonly wear old clothes around the house that are unflattering and generally too big. But I get messy in the kichen and when it isn't the mess (taken care of by an apron), it is the smell. I cannot bear to cook anything with any flavour or spices and then go out in said clothing, because I can always still smell it. Maybe I just need to invest in decent washables and always have a set ready. But that still wouldn't eliminate the need to change when leaving the house.

Oh, and as a side-note, I always wear a bra (except to bed). So I may look frumpy when I answer the door, but not unsupported! But the issue of decent casual wear is part of the reason I hate it when people "drop in" on me. : (

Count me as another fan of aprons. I used to have one like Gaylene's photo to the right, but almost to my ankles, from a yard sale--I was told it was an old nurse's uniform! When I'm smart, I leave the apron on to eat, too; frankly I trash more clothing by eating, and I'm one who does a lot of cooking! As for cooking smells, well, even the coats in the coat closet end up smelling like curry or whatever, so it's a lost cause.

When my kids were tiny I had to make a pact with myself NEVER to wear sweats, because next thing I'd be running to the store or the library in them, and I discovered that NOTHING trashes a young mom's self-esteem more quickly than dressing like she doesn't care about herself. Angie's recent post on the new sweatshirts gave me the heebie-jeebies for that reason.

I wear clothes that have been demoted from my earlier less-fab wardrobe.

I keep my jeans on and throw on a t-shirt. I will also wear leggings/tunic or a cotton dress that has seen better days. Sometimes I'll wear my casual knit dresses.

Since I used to wear all these clothes out the door, I'm never embarrassed if I have to be seen in them.

Another big fan of modal here. I've become a total convert to Target Gilligan Omalley modal undies, and most of my PJ's and even many of my wear out in the world tees are modal. We also have modal blend sheets that feel soooo good against your skin. Aaahhh.

Mary, I have about 3 sets of black pj bottoms -- bought at the Gap. So soft and comfy and they've worn well. I don't see anything like them on their site. This is what they look like but in black:

http://www.victoriassecret.com.....ueType=OLS

I don't like to lounge in yoga pants because the spandex has the wrong "feel" against the skin. In winter I will lounge in the single pair of sweats I own on super cold days. But otherwise since I am on Team Hot, these are perfect weight year round for me. YMMV.

For summer I recently purchased a new Calvin Klein nightgown, also modal, also black. I have just been running so hot lately, even with the AC on. It was funny because the other night we were out at a restaurant and the hostess was wearing the EXACT same nightgown -- as a summer dress. Out. In public! With bra and with strappy sandals and earrings. Her secret is safe with me: she looked just fine.

I have the unique situation that my home loungewear is also my work wear. In a few months, I will be working with dogs in the swim spa in our back yard. I wear camisoles with built-in shelf bras, or swimsuit tank tops with the same constuction (Land's End, etc.). I'm an almost-A cup, so those work for me. For those who need more support, I've seen camisoles with soft-cup bras built in. I understand that cami's with built-in bras probably wouldn't work for those of you who have more ample bosoms. Yoga pants or sweats or jeans or shorts, with swimsuit bottoms underneath. Slip-on footwear or sandals or easy on-&-off shoes with Velcro. I dress something like my friend who is a yoga instructor, except I wear swimsuits.

P.S. Shabbychick, it's nice that you dress to show your respect for members of your church & community. I've recently started going to church, so I'm enjoying dressing up a little more now & then, although casual wear is fine at our church.

Well, I'm a SAHM but I have a little bit of a different lifestyle as a Pastor's wife. We live right behind the church, so we often have people from the community or church members dropping by. Because of this, I need to look my best every day. I don't wear my Sunday best every day, but I do not lounge around in pj's or sweats. I don't even own sweats and I never wear pants, so I'm always in a skirt. Today I have on a long navy cotton skirt and a simple blue and white striped nautical tee. If I have to run out I will throw on a read cardi over it. I never go out without makeup and hair done, and those are normally done when I'm at home anyway. I am always way more dressed up than others at the store (not to the nines, just chic-er).

Mo -- thank you so much for the suggestions. I have looked at the bandeaus and they do look incredibly comfortable. I will pick one up this weekend and give it a try.

I am also thinking of trying Shiny's idea of black PJ bottoms and tank tops. I LOVE tank tops and I sense this style would be quite a bit dressier than what I am currently wearing.

Here's a couple of examples of "full-coverage" aprons. I used to do a lot sewing and still have some vintage patterns but it's my daughter-in-law who creates all my aprons now. She has just started sewing and loves making simple, craft-style items. She claims it's her sanity-saver from her day job as a tax lawyer!

ETA: To be fair, these are just some pictures that are similar to my aprons. My apron needs laundering before it would be ready for prime-time, and my vintage patterns are on the other side of the country in my DIL's sewing room. Googling "full coverage apron" brings up lots more images.

I am at home most of the time, and I dress in good casuals. I want to be ready to open the door to anyone, and to go out at the drop of a hat. And to treat myself with respect.

And yes, my apron wardrobe is starting to get used more often. Saves me having to change out when I spatter or spill on myself, which is more frequent than I care to admit.

Great conversation! I change my clothes typically when I am home but recently went through my gear and "loungewear' and tossed out anything that was just too worn, misshapen, had a hole or was frankly just embarrassing to be seen in. I saved two old faves - flannel pj bottom and one just incredibly soft tshirt for days when I am bed ridden with a cold lol.

I change into yoga pants and tank/t if I know we are in for the evening. If I think I may go out or if there are people over/outside world contact, I stick to soft jeans (like stretchy skinnies) and a nicer knit top.

Aprons. Aprons. Aprons. (My grandmother would be so proud of me!)

Since I made a a resolution to wear all my wardrobe, I've discovered full-coverage aprons are my best friend. My favorite one is like a sleeveless wrap dress worn backwards. It's in a cute print, washes like a dream, and covers everything except my sleeves (which are usually rolled up). It looks almost exactly like the ones that my grandmother and mother wore in the 40s and 50s.

Unless I'm doing going to do something VERY messy, I'm fully dressed under my apron, so, if someone comes to the door or I have to run out, I just whip it off and I'm ready to go. I will wear lounge wear in the late evening after I shower or early in the morning when I first get up, but it was too easy to get into the rut of wearing yoga wear and sweats all day when I was not planning to go out.

But I do go barefoot in the kitchen, which makes my husband laugh.

If nobody is home but us, I am in pj's. My strategy is to stick to neutral camis and pj bottoms -- like black. If it's chilly (and I bat for Team Always Hot) I pop a cozy sweatshirt over. If for some reason I have to run outside for a minute, or the mailman or neighbor rings the doorbell, because the pj's are solid black, it looks like lounge wear and is not quite so embarrassing as being found in pink polka dots or a print with teddy bears. :-)

If I'm entertaining company, I do dress up. But I will choose outfits that are loose and comfortable and afford freedom of movement, and that also work with bare or socked feet as I don't like to wear shoes in my house. So I am dressed up, but comfortable. I relax on the accessories to give it a slightly more casual feel.

To solve your problem about cooking for company, you need an apron!! A pretty one!

For xmas this past year my mom made aprons for everyone. I don't have a picture of mine handy, but here are her grandchildren wearing theirs (they were baking my parents' 50th anniversary cake). Mine is black and white checks -- very sophisticated and in keeping with my style, and also to scale for me.

Look for an apron that fits and flatters your figure, that goes with your wardrobe color scheme, that can be washed, that covers all the way down to the knee, and pockets are great too.

P.s I'll probably hide this photo in a day or so -- since it's not me. Enjoy while you can.

I answer my door all the time without my bra. =P In fact, I have posted bra-less WIWs here before too. It may be less than advisable, but oh well - it's flattering *enough* and I don't deal well with strapless bras. One of the benefits to being (somewhat) small-chested - I am a C cup, but used to be a B cup and sometimes wish I could go back to that - yes, I used to look even more pear-ish but it was so convenient having small boobs.
