Wow, these are some amazing finds! Especially that J Crew skirt with the incredibly pattern. I don’t have great pictures of most of my best thrifting triumphs but probably the fanciest thing I’ve found to date is these [arguably weird but also cool] shoes, which were $15 at Goodwill, apparently unworn, with no size marked. I tried them on and they fit perfectly. Then I looked up the name inside and found that they’re handmade Italian shoes that start at 700 euros new !!

Occasionally I buy on TRR "new, with tags on". So secondhand, but unused. I've also bought a pair of perfect white pearlized vintage sunnies from 1963 that were never used either! What they call "new old stock". Those are KILLER awesome!

I'm one of the people who supplies the secondhand market with great condition items. Without people like me, there would be nothing for you to thrift! Everyone has their place :)

Since Covid, I’ve done no thrift shopping, and hardly any local shopping. In the past, though, I have found some treasures: a sheepskin coat, NWT deadstock tweed coat from the 60’s, and an Akris Punto jacket, all at Value Village.

I'm not at all an expert, but every year I seem to find one or two fantastic items -- usually not in thrift stores, exactly, but in consignment shops. My current favourites are a pair of Dries van Noten cotton-linen pants, a 1970s vintage leather trench, and an unworn-with-tags Diane von Furstenburg silk/ cotton cardigan.

I'd say 75% of my wardrobe was acquired second-hand, either at thrift shops, online, or from my generous sister-in-law's vast closet. One key to successful thrifting is to be well-educated on brands/trends/style, and of course, we all know what a valuable resource YLF is in that regard.

For me, online thrifting takes a different approach from in-store thrifting. I find that online shopping works best when searching for a specific item. If you're looking for, say, white bootcut jeans or a navy fringe jacket, your likelihood of finding them (in your size/preferred brands) online is greater than by stopping into the local thrift shop. On the other hand, shopping in person is more of a discovery process: a way to find pieces you didn't know existed, evaluate brands that have received actual use, and curate a unique wardrobe. You need both an open mind and discipline!

My mantra this year is ‘second hand first’. Below are my discoveries for 2024.

#1 Christian Siriano sleeveless turtleneck
#2 Louben (made in Canada!) linen cropped jacket
#3 red sleeveless cotton button down
#4 sleeveless cotton chambray dress
#5 St. Michael’s 100 wool blazer jacket
#6 Anne Klein cashmere sweater

Only the cashmere sweater (curated thrift) cost more than $10. Everything else was under $10. The quality is quite good with natural fabrics, good buttons and linings, French seams, shaping (darts, etc.)

I thrift most of my wardrobe. Just yesterday I found a Scandi brand black sleeveless trapeze dress, with pockets for 75 Euro cents (!). It was final sale day before new stock comes in. It is such a good cut and totally fits my current style preferences.

I have tried to get into it more in recent years for the same reasons as Jenny H and had a bit of success. 2 jackets might be the best, one $15 which included a matching pencil skirt I gave to a daughter, and one $12. Pretty good for good quality jackets that are my preferred softer styles (not stiff blazers).

Two thrifting posts in a row! I think there are lots of ways to shop second hand depending on your time, patience, location, budget, etc. But I must agree with April (and son) that the most heart stopping values are found at charity shops in well to do areas, preferably run by volunteers with no interest in fashion.

Approximately 80-85% of my wardrobe is pre-loved. When I second-hand shop, I frequent my neighborhood b & m consignment/thrift/vintage shops first. I have cultivated relationships with the shop owners over the years. Shop small and shop local is my mantra. When I'm ready to thrift or consign clothing, I know exactly in which store each item has the greatest chance of selling. I also have had good luck with eBay, Poshmark and The Real Real. My latest consignment find is this NWT J Crew skirt.

Would love to see your finds! I go thrifting very often, with no expectations, and enjoy the surprises that pop up. These last few years I often find better quality things thrifting than I do when I shop new.

I’ve had some wonderful success thrifting recently, I really enjoy the hunt because you never know what you’re going to find. Below are some of my recent purchases that I’ve made using custom finds. I found these at my local thrifts stores, I’ve never done online thrifting, I need to see the condition, quality and fit first before buying. Total cost for all 5 items was $46.75

I am a frequent consignment store shopper for both the great deals and to avoid buying new to help reduce what goes to the landfill. I’ve had decent luck finding some great bargains with a number of things having original tags. But it’s definitely a hit or miss situation (mostly miss) as I’ll find something that works maybe on only one of every five visits.

Secondhand shopping is indeed highly geographically-dependent, kk!

Little Mr. A and I have determined that the best things are often found at the unfanciest place near the wealthiest zip code. Goodwill or something similar rather than a more upscale resale boutique.

JH - I share your concern about buying new. A recent spate of shopping has made me unhappy with the number of plastic bags it generates.

Picked up a sweater set and a great lightweight floral cardigan.
Photos to follow.
