Hey guys! On a side note, I'm selling a $400 Lord & Taylor gift card that has sat in my wallet for almost a year. I haven't really decided what I'm asking for it, but I'm willing to do a little less than the actual value.

I shop often at the L&T in Stamford that Viva mentioned. I find they have several of the same brands as Nordstrom's, good sales and a nice selection of clothes overall. As Niki said, L&T's "424 Fifth" line is fantastic. I've noticed that my store has changed in the last couple of years with more current styles and designers. This probably has something to do with the new CEO that Gaylene mentioned.

I totally agree with everything Shiny said.

The men's sections are really good as well. L&T's "Black brown" line for men is really high quality.

You can sign-up for coupons or just use your phone. They also have a fun annual charity shopping day here in November. I never miss it!

Enjoy!

Lord and Taylor, Saks, and Hudson's Bay stores are all owned by the same conglomerate called Hudson's Bay Company after a series of divestitures and takeovers a year or so ago. The current Vice Chairman, Bonnie Brooks, was promoted after a stint as CEO and President of Hudson's Bay stores in Canada. At the Bay, she was charged with revamping a huge chain of tired Macy-like stores into a more upscale retailer that could compete with the traditional upscale Canadian retailer, Holt Renfrew, and with the upcoming entry of Nordstrom's and other luxury retailers into the Canadian market. She was quite successful at the revamp although it still has a ways to go. Her successor at the Hudson's Bay arm comes from a Lord and Taylor background and current thinking is that Bonnie Brooks was promoted to Vice Chairman so she could spend more time getting Lord and Taylor back to its position as a competitor to Nordstrom's and other upscale retailers.

Bonnie Brooks is a fascinating woman who seems to have the knack, and the connections, to be able to re-vitalize tired retail environments by focusing on introducing new, upscale designer labels, especially in the areas of shoes, handbags, and cosmetics. Her relatively young age (mid 50s) and European and Far East fashion connections, seem to give her an edge over some of the other retail executives in figuring out how to entice female shoppers into stores. It will be interesting to see if her magic touch will work with Lord and Taylor. Incidentally, it was her idea to integrate merchandise lines between stores, so that is why you see cross-over between labels and brands between the chains held by the Hudson's Bay Company. Apparently there will be a Hudson's Bay boutique in some Lord and Taylor stores that will be selling items like the traditional striped Hudson Bay blankets and coats.

I am near a mall that has a Macy's, a L&T, and a Nordstrom's. Of all three, I prefer shopping at the L&T.

The Nordstrom's always seems to have a sparser selection compared to what's online. The lighting is dark and the mirrors are tilted, thus deceiving. The petite's section is always picked over and limited. And I've not ever been impressed with the SA's -- I can't tell you how many times I can see they size me up and know there's not going to be anything in the store that fits me, and then they wind up taking me to the computer to show me what I can order online. Frustrating! I could've saved myself the trip! This applies to shoes as well -- I've rarely bought shoes there because 9 out of 10 times, they are out of my shoe size. That said, I really like Nordstrom's online site -- the selection and the user experience -- and do order a lot online. But I dislike the brick&mortar store so much, I rarely make the trip to return items in the store. I return by mail instead.

Macy's has really gone down hill. I hate going in that store now, though I still occasionally buy items online, sticking to certain tried-and-true brands, like Ralph Lauren (love their dresses). I also don't mind their shoe department - it's a mess, yes, but I prefer shopping in their concentrated shoe mess rather than walking through an enormous DSW, hopping along on one bare foot, pulling out my own boxes, and trying them on standing up. Grrr. And the SA's in the Macy's shoe department are always helpful -- second only to Bloomingdale's shoe SA's, in my experience.

L&T - the store near me is bright, well lit, and the dressing room mirrors don't seem to play tricks. It's not messy and disorganized like Macy's (except during sales). The SA's tend to be non-existent but I don't mind that - sometimes I don't want anyone hovering. They have an enormous dress section -- with casual dresses near business dresses and formal dresses too. Petites aren't just in a separate department but are often mixed in with regulars (organized by brand) which I find can actually be helpful, for comparison's sake. And I forget the store brand, but I like their cardigans much better than Nordstrom's Calson or Halogen. Quality is better. They also have the best selection of business wear - suit jackets, shells, skirts, slacks. Not high end designer /trendy but if you need that sort of clothes, it's worth checking out. I've never bought shoes there because typically by the time I am done looking through the clothes, I am too worn out to stop and look at shoes, but they have a great selection.

Macy's - best for shoe shopping

L&T - best for dress shopping

Nordstrom's - my strategy is to swing by in hopes of being able to see an item that was online, to get a sense of the quality, without any expectation that they'll have it in my size. But while in that mall, I can at least feel the fabric and see it in person -- before going back home to order online.

I've always thought of L&T as good quality, but maybe a little staid. I think that's because, when I was growing up, the only time I ever went there was when my mom or grandma was looking for something there and I was dragged along. So not sure how much basis in reality that impression actually has.

I've been there a few times as an adult, but not recently. Was impressed with the selection in things like coats/shoes/bags, and got a nice pair of La Canadienne boots on sale there that I still wear. I've also heard they have good cashmere. From my mom, actually, I think.

I've always loved stopping at the L&T in Stamford CT when visiting family. I think it's right to place the store between Macys and Nordies. This one in Stamford has a small but good designer selection -- including Theory, Pink Tartan, EF, Trina Turk, Kate Spade ... They have a great shoe department and fantastic shoe sales. Also, really good black Friday sales, if you care about that sort of thing -- my sister-in-law and I always go there for gifts for our DHs.

The women who work at this L&T are fantastic SAs, many of them lifers -- career SAs, longtime Stamford residents, usually older Italian women. Love them.

I was there in the spring to try on dresses late on night and I got chatting with one SA, and she told me there was a lot of stress among the staff because they were all moving to commission-based salary starting the next week. I feel like the shoe department has been commission-based for a long time, and clothing is only now catching up. It was a tough change for these ladies.
I guess I am saying that in my very limited L&T experience, it has always represented old-world customer service. And even that may now be over because of this change.

I hope you have a good experience with L&T!

Thanks everyone for the great info and insights!
Crutcher, sounds like we all agree that Macy's is a hard place to shop!
Jjsloane, great tips about coupons and promotions! I definitely like to take advantage of any deal I can towards something I am buying.
Karie, thanks for the tips about Paramus shopping. That road drives me crazy with those "jug handle" turns though! And I didn't even know there was a Macy's in Rotterdam! (I'm not originally from this area, so still discovering and exploring)
Janet, I'm so glad to hear about your good experiences at L & T, it makes me eager to check it out!

There is a mall 5 miles away from me with a L&T, Macys and a small Nordstrom. I actually prefer L&T over Macy's these days, but I wonder how much of that is because of individual store buyers. The Macys here is really unappealing to me now -- not much selection in contemporary lines, it's crowded with merchandise and understaffed. The L&T is a step up, IMHO, even though they carry many of the same brands as Macy's (they also share some with Nordstrom, but the prices are comparable so I usually buy at Nordstrom to get the reward points). The dress and accessory departments at our L&T have particularly wide selections, and the handbag department is quite good too. It's not as overstuffed with merchandise, and it's easier to find a SA when you need one. I think you'll like it, if it's anything like ours.

I've been past the Nordstrom in Paramus en route to visit family and friends, but I've never been in that one, only the one in Cherry Hill. Cherry Hill's shoe dept. was large and very nice, but I was disappointed in the rest of the store. The merchandise was very widely spread out (like the store seemed a bit empty) and mostly high to very high end. Hopefully their other stores are nicer and encompass a wider variety of their merchandise.

If you get to the Nordies and Ikea stores in Paramus, there are also outlet centers nearby - the Jersey Shore Outlets in Tinton Falls (very nice), and the Secaucas Outlets in Secaucas (very old). Then there's the big outlet center you'll pass on the way, Woodbury Commons (NY Thruway exit 16).

Macy's in Colonie Ctr. is a huge store and I had to chuckle when I read your comment - I always get lost/disoriented in there too! Crossgates is a bit smaller and Rotterdam Square is the smallest of all.

I'm looking forward to the opening of L&T - mostly out of curiosity - they've been taking forever working on that place! It's where Macy's used to be in Crossgates, and they've been working on it since before Christmas.

My mall has a modest L&T but I shop there and not our overstocked (messy) Macy's. The customer service is OK (sparse but if you find someone they are usually helpful) I find great deals there, but often things are not marked (shoes). They have fantastic promos and almost always have a coupon running and the sales associates will use theirs (and they often don't exclude beauty). I've never found anything at a Macy's sale that even qualified for their coupons so I gave up.
Their website has much more than I've ever seen in store but is a bit difficult to navigate (searches and sorts don't work well), but if you take the time you can find great bargains and return in store (once you get one).

For career wear, dresses and shoes they are great. They seem to be increasing their "younger hipper" brands and have taken a full section in my store for BCBG and Free People but still cater to us old ladies with lots of Jones NY, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, DKNY and Ralph Lauren. I'm pretty sure the bigger (fancier) ones nearby carry the higher end designer stuff I see online. Scouring sale racks I've found fantastic deals on suits, dresses, jackets and jewelry that are better than Rack prices.
Their men's is pretty comparable to Macy's. I find their kids uninteresting and pricey. They offer tailoring as well (and I think it's free with L&T card)

Very interesting history retailgirl, thanks! I love to learn about the past of a place/industry. I keep hearing about the demise/extinction of department stores, but maybe mainly the "lower end" ones? (Sears etc). I will definitely keep them in mind for when I need a special dress.

Lord and taylor was part of the May Company and when Macys bought out May, L&T wasn't part of the deal. Not sure who owns them now...I think it's the same company as The Bay in Canada. Many years ago, L&T was a "carriage trade" store...then when it was May, it was very promotional. Other May stores were Filene's, Hecht's, not sure who else. I think they are trying to get back to their roots. I would say they are better than Macy's, but below Nordstrom. Not close to NM, in terms of merchandise. They are still somewhat promotional. They used to be known for their dress department...I remember always making a trip to Boston to go to L&T if I needed a special dress...because if you couldn't find one there, it didn't exist!

No L&T were I live now, but tons of them in New England were I grew up. It's one of my moms and youngest sisters favorite places to shop, so I still get in one every so often. I'd describe it as Macy's slightly uppity cousin, IYKWIM.
(I should add,not as many sales as Macy's,but it's not a store I would pay full price in. )

I think they really depend on the location. Some of them are little better than a mall Macy's, and others have huge selections. The one in New York City has an amazing assortment of dresses.

Carter, yikes! That would be enough to make me never set foot in there again, too. Ugh. Hopefully they have smartened up since then! I've never been to a Neiman Marcus before either (except for a weird NM outlet store that was in my hometown for a few years when I was a teenager.) I remember being very confused about the fashion/styles they had when I went in the store to check it out, and I just thought "oh, I guess this is what people in cities wear."

Haha, very cool to see someone else from around here, Karie! I was thinking maybe I'd try and get to the Nordstrom's in Paramus, NJ one day (bonus...it's near an Ikea!). I will definitely check out their website, although it's hard for me to imagine buying clothes online without having seen them in person.

Based on your description, I look forward to checking out L & T when they arrive! I always seem to feel so overwhelmed in the Crossgates/Colonie Center Macy's (Macyses? Macys'? Macyii?). I never really know what the different departments are, and I always get disoriented!

My experience has only been with the Atlanta store and was 25 years ago. I was mid 20s, had a not-insignificant amount of money to spend, and a coat in my hand that I wanted to buy. Not a single SA would help me. If I headed in the direction of one, she ducked in the back. No joke. My mom met me there to go to lunch. When she arrived, they were all over her trying to help. I handed one the coat I had wanted and walked out furious. I was very well dressed and could easily afford the pricey coat. I haven't been in L&T since. Hopefully your experience will be better. As far as merchandise goes, it tends to be a smaller Neiman's...at least it used to.

Well hello, fabber from my part of the planet! When I started reading your post, I thought, "The closest Nordies to me is about three hrs. away, too!" and then, "Lord and Taylor is coming to my area, too!" It's nice to see someone here from my part of NY.

I've only ever been to the Nordies in Cherry Hill, NJ (while visiting friends) and it's very similar to our Macy's in Colonie Center and Crossgates. They both carry designers like Vince Camuto but Nordies is more high end overall. Lord and Taylor was here about a decade or so ago, and they are higher end like Nordstrom.

Nordstrom has two big sales, one of which is the Nordstrom Annual Sale (July) which has the upcoming Fall season's clothing on sale. Their website is fantastic, and they offer free shipping both ways.

So I know everyone's favorite place seems to be Nordstrom's, but the closest one to me is almost 3 hours away. Maybe I'll take a trip and check it out some day.

I keep seeing billboards in my area saying that Lord and Taylor is coming this fall. Just wondering if this is something I should be excited about? We do have Macy's here...is it pretty much just another Macy's? Any brands or lines they carry that are especially good/unique? Any specific department that stands out? Do they have good sales/deals? Do they provide (good) bra fittings?

Thanks in advance for any insight into this store that I know nothing about!
