Una, my chiropractor let me know my left leg was shorter. Part of it is from the hip illiotibial band being tighter on that side and therefore pulling the leg up. When she adjusts me I'm back to (pretty much) even. But when I run longer mileage I can feel the IT band start to pull on my knee on that side. During my half marathon it started at mile 6. I just started running faster at that point and it helped with the pain - something about how that altered my gait. I stretch it all the time but still need adjustments if I'm running a lot.

Una, I went to an orthopedist when my left hip started aching about 5 years ago. That's when my legs were measured and my 'defect' was discovered. I wear a heel orthodic in my right shoe. Of course, when I do wear sandals, I'm careful not to overdo by walking miles and miles.

Using my elliptical helps immensely with alleviating any hip or knee pain, which I rarely have. I always wear New Balance Cross Trainers with a right heel orthodic when working out.

For those with uneven legs, how did you "officially' find out? I am wondering if that's the reason for my left knee hurting when I run or hike. I often feel off-kilter when I stand too...

My left leg is 1/4 inch longer than my right leg! A proper heel orthodic in my right shoe is all it takes to take the stress off my hip and make me even.

It was my yoga teacher who pointed out the difference in length between my right and left leg. Also my left hip rotates way more than my right one (this is meaningful if you ever trained in dance).

My eyes are a little different too -- so I get the asymmetrical face thing. Even my wrinkles are uneven!

But still, I could be so much worse off. I can see through those uneven eyes, without glasses. And my legs keep me going all day long, in a job where I don't sit for hours. I'm pretty amazed it all works so well and without any pain either.

Tarzy - you have that "interesting physical irregularity" as well! : )

Yes, I also have slight scoliosis which makes one hip slightly higher than the other, affecting my pants length. I'm not sure about my shoulders...I'll have to check into that. My face is a bit asymetrical from my cheeks down to the jawline. Both my left hand and left foot is slightly bigger than the right ones which I think is odd since I'm right handed.

Although these little problems can add a bit of frustration in fitting clothes, it's not something that I stress over. My apple bits on the other hand.....

Tarzy, that's the nicest thing anyone has said all day.

I'm definitely not balanced. I attribute my lower right shoulder to the fact that I've used a shoulder bag for decades. I've noticed that many many women have a similar imbalance. After years of yoga during which my teacher promised we would straighten out our unbalanced sides I developed bursitis in my left hip. I ended up at a specialist and learned that my left leg is shorter than the right. Weeks of physical therapy didn't help at all. Possibly this is why my left bunion is worse than the right one.

Despite a heel pad in the left shoe (doesn't work so well in the summer) I still get my pants hemmed to slightly different lengths. This is another one I notice frequently--many women have a noticeable difference in how pants hang. (It could also be from one hip being higher than the other.)

I seriously doubt that anyone is exactly the same on both sides of the body.

Patty, Wow, Count me in as one of those with an asymmetrical face. The first I learned about it was in college when a roommate applied eyeliner, shifted back a couple of inches with a puzzled expression on her face and remarked how very unsymmetrical my face looked. Most recently, it was a gynec who commented upon it and said it might be due to a hormonal imbalance when my mother was pregnant with me.

The left side of my body is noticeably (atleast to me) larger which makes bra and shoe shopping a pain in the patootie.

I'm definitely lopsided - shoulders and hips are slightly crooked, and when I wear jeans or pants, one of the legs always drags more than the other unless I get them tailored/hemmed. My left foot is about a 1/2 size larger than my right foot, so I try to fit shoes to that foot first since it's not a big enough difference to warrant purchasing two sizes. I also noticed that my lined jackets tend to wear out near the rear of the hip on the right side of my body more than my left, and I'm not sure why.

I get chronically severely misaligned--- the kind of thing where a physical therapist has spent 30 minutes yanking on a hip that had to be out of the socket despite the fact I had been walking on it all week like that. It is very typical for me to get up and look in the mirror and see one shoulder 4 inches higher than the other. Of course, that affects how your girls hang and then you look all Quasimodo. Unless you have some sort of medical problem, there is a good chance a noticeable abnormality is something that can be corrected by a chiro.

I'll chime in too, in this group effort to make you feel better about your asymmetry!

My most noticeable asymmetry is right in the middle of my face: my eyes! The right one folds a little more than the other. It's not a huge thing, but it has been like that for my entire life. When I was younger it used to annoy me, but I've moved on. :-)

Also, my right foot is a half size smaller, so I often find myself putting a heel insert into my right shoe. I have other slight asymmetries in my body but they don't require special treatment -- right hand bigger than the left, right earlobe smaller, etc.

My boyfriend has very lopsided shoulders and, like Marley, this causes a lot of neck, shoulder, and back pain. His is because he was a baseball pitcher for many years and the constant twisting motion made him develop scoliosis. Unfortunately, many doctors, including orthopedists, have told him that there is nothing he can do to correct it, short of back surgery (which they strongly recommend against). My guess is if the issue is posture-related, Sveta's exercises will help, but if it is due to scoliosis of the spine, there might not be much you can do.

This is actually quite comforting to me. I have scoliosis too, and one leg is about half an inch shorter than the other. I don't know how visible my asymmetry is to others, but I can see a significant difference in the two sides of my face and body. My one shoulder sits higher than the other, my chin is crooked, one eye is wider than the other, my left foot is larger than my right, and I even see a difference in the width of my calves and ankles.

So we may be lopsided, but we're still fab!

Una, Marley, I will try to take pictures today and post them here - or is it better on a new thread? Marley, that's right: bad posture is not only makes us look bad but causes the pain in the neck and shoulders and even can lead to a permanent spine problems. I had to fight a pinched nerve in my shoulder for more than 6 months last year and now I am very diligent about improving my posture.
I also highly recommend to take yoga which really does wonders to improving the posture and making you aware of your body.

Patty - OUCH! That doc wasn't very nice :| and that's just his opinion; we sometimes look for asymmetry as a sign of neurological or vascular problems, but maybe his friend was a plastic surgeon and needed some business? *hugs* I do understand what it's like to have a face that attracts attention though - I have had reconstructive plastics done on my face and elsewhere; and man, while that was healing, people stared openly ... it does make you feel crummy.

I have had many doctors comment on my "very asymmetrical face" this one specific doc I went to see when I was in college (for a cold I was afraid would stop me from some 24 hr studio work) had to repeat--"no you don't understand--you have a VERY asymmetrical face, have you considered plastic surgery". Dentists I take my husband/kids to over the years have told me I should "have that abscess looked after". I have to tell them it's my crooked face. Not good for the old self esteem. When someone looks at me --I wait for a comment, like I've been hard wired to it.
Sorry I'm a bit of an Eeyore at times--purge... I do know that everyone's face is different on both sides and that's normal---I just don't want to be bugged about it by a bunch of guys in a car in the parking lot at the mall--twice!! Gak--purge again!!
.....Uhhhhhhhh--have you seen the trailer for Cowboys and Aliens yet?......Squirrel!

Me too, Sveta - I tried to do it, but I am seriously impaired at following instructions without a visual.

I have one shoulder that is noticeably higher than the other and I've been told that that is the cause of a LOT of the pain that I have in my neck and shoulder. Sveta - I would love to see pics of that exercise that you just described!

MaryK, my left foot juts out to the left when I walk/run! I got it from my dad. Our left legs aren't quite screwed on straight at the knee...
