I need to size down in the Patagonia Ryleys but the D. Webb harem pants are a winner. So pleased with them. Thank you, Srah!

I have the Patagoina Ahnya's. I wouldn't do yoga in them. I have the smallest size, and even with the drawstring cinched the waist is LOOSE. They sit below my hips. Ridiculously comfortable loungewear though. And they've held up well over a couple years of almost-daily use.

I clicked on the NYT link and wished I hadn’t. I understand where the author is coming from, but ergh, it’s not just about the male gaze. Learn from experience when you expose your chest because your loose shirt snagged on a barbell whilst cleaning; or the barbell pulled your pants down whilst deadlifting; or—my favourite—the treadmill grabbed hold of your pants, leaving you in your knickers (happened to a former housemate). I can’t imagine doing contemporary yoga with its inversions, while having to worry about my part of my body was being exposed. The most compelling counter-argument concerns vaginal health, but I digress.

Have you called any martial arts studios to find out where they get their clothing? The uniforms tend to be loose and allow free movement, so you might to start there if you haven’t found anything.

I love the NYT article - "sporty doilies." LOL ETA - I meant I love the snark on current legging fashions. Otherwise I agree with gradfashionista below.

Tulle - I am short-waisted and short so can't do high-rises but a fold-over style might work.

Ladypainter - my husband often wears his lightweight hiking pants to yoga because he does not like spandex.

StyleFan - I remember those! All the yoga instructors used to wear them. I haven't seen them in several years.

Srah - those D.Webb harem capris look fun. I might try those.

Not sure if this is quite what you're looking for, but since you asked for harem pants, these are all gorgeous and luxe and amazing:

https://dwebbdesigns.com/collections/pants
https://www.melodiadesigns.com/jumpers/jasmine3
https://www.melodiadesigns.com/bottoms/eliza

D. Webb is a total sweetheart, and all of her clothes are handmade in NY.

Melodia Designs is also awesome, and all of her things are made in San Diego. I have a few pairs of Melodia flare pants that I've been wearing to dance and yoga classes and performances for more than 10 years, and they still look great and haven't bagged or stretched out a bit.

LaP, that article is spot-on! I was ok with leggings - first the sleek black ones, then the multi-hued ones, then the ones that are like running tights but I simply can't do the ones with the mesh cut-outs snaking down the legs I also feel ranty about the bras with a gazillion straps but I must stop before I alienate everybody.

I asked my mom if she could get my old tailor in India to sew me some but it is apparently outside his comfort zone.

If you like high waists, Patagonia’s Serenity Pants are *the* classic cotton stretch yoga pant, IMHO. They also have a harem-style pant called the Ahnya, and a DWR-fabric version called the Happy Hike Studio Pant (very nice lightweight hiking pant).
Athleta also make several jogger/harem-style tights, but using their Pilayo and other tech stretch fabrics. I think their new Relax line has some harem pants in a modal stretch blend.
Good luck!

There were some great Yoga pants called Be Present. I was looking for them but I can't find them. You may be able to find them on ebay. I often see women wearing them. They are loose with a lotus embrodiery on the back.

Elpgal, you didn't happen to read that hilarious op-ed in the NYT recently did you?
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/0.....women.html

It's received some negative responses, of course, because no one likes to be told what they should/shouldn't wear.
https://www.huffingtonpost.com.....t-having-i

But I have to say I'm somewhat of the same mind. There are definitely days when I don't want to wear leggings. I have one old pair of straight-leg yoga pants from Prana. It looks like they don't make the same model anymore, but they do still have some looser options:
http://www.prana.com/women/bot.....tOLvOmFfqh

Harem pants, specifically: http://www.prana.com/ryley-cro.....olor=black

Also, any yoga teacher who claims they can't tell whether your position is correct unless your clothes are skin tight isn't much of a teacher. Yoga has been around a lot longer than spandex.

Does anyone remember the banded bottom/harem pants folk used to wear to yoga way back when? Where can I find some? I am tired of spandexy skin-tight leggings with cutouts.
