Last year I went on two trips almost back to back, and by the time I got home I was so happy not to be stuck with a capsule wardrobe that fits in my little backpack. It's what made me realise I could never be a hardcore closet minimalist! And when I was in Ecuador this fall, I spent 5 days at a lodge in the Amazon; it was so nice not have to worry about hair/make up/what to wear as I only had 2 rain forest appropriate options & one was usually drying! It made me want to go camping more, but with real mattresses. ;)

It sounds like you had such a neat (hard-working) time on the ranch, and look at that horse! So fun! Did you get much photography in?

I get that feeling every time we go on a day hike or a week-long camping trip. I've learned to schedule a dressier outfit post-shower because I will want to feel girly now that I'm not grubby.

Janet, after meeting you and seeing you IRL, you'd honestly look beautiful in anything, and that includes men's rubber boots! :)

However, I can understand the excitement of putting on a gorgeous silk blouse and a nice pair of boots, not designed for slogging in the mud.

I know what you mean about those times in our lives when certain events or schedules have us wearing clothes for function more than fashion and, yes, I think our desires for the latter will find a way to say "wear me, please."

Now, I can't wait for the cows to arrive and you to get some photos in your signature style and please take a few selfies with you in the your boots and flannel.

10 years ago, I backpacked with a friend through Europe. Two t-shirts, two pants and one fleece jacket for 40 days. We lunched on day old baguettes (which sold for pennies) and boiled potatoes and eggs (because they cooked in an electric kettle). I miss doing gung-ho stuff like that but I'm much too spoilt now...

My summer lake wardrobe is a departure from my usual stuff, but I kind of love it. To me, there is nothing more relaxing than enjoying nature and being active so I'm all about wearing my comfy grubby stuff that I don't worry about ruining. A little dirt adds character! ;)

My experience is similar to Thistle's - when on maternity leave I wore yoga pants and old t-shirts. I really tried with this last baby to wear nicer stuff - no cruddy tees with holes and ragged hems. I wore nursing tanks with cardigans. Still not particularly stylish but at least all the clothes were in good shape.

Nothing roughing it, but when I was home on maternity leave after a bad C-Section, I couldn't wear anything tight across my tummy for almost 3 months. I lived in Yoga pants and sweats.

I remember when getting dressed, actually finding real clothes I could wear, to hobble through the grocery store was a really big deal!

I'm thinking some might think we are taking this minimal wardrobe thing a bit far? But, seriously, it's amazing how easy it is to live when your only decisions are which T-shirt and pair of socks should I wear today and usually the answer is obvious since you only have one choice that isn't hanging to dry off your pack!

Gaylene, I totally get that!

Our honeymoon was in the Canadian Rockies, and we did plenty of hiking, including an overnight stay in a mountaineering cabin. Yep, no showers, no makeup, it was pretty much like camping. So clearly, even on the most romantic occasion for a trip, we don't mind dressing down... way down!

I'm going to try my best to pack as minimally as I possibly can for my Antarctic trip in a couple of months. There is a strict weight limit on the flight from Chile to King George Island, and it includes photography gear, so it's going to be a challenge. My fellow photographers may get sick of seeing me in black and grey tees, but so be it!

Both my husband and I love to spend time in the mountains--skiing (downhill and Nordic ) and snowshoeing in the winter, and backpacking and cycling in the summer. My wardrobe is strictly gear and the only items in my personal kit are biodegradable soap, toothpaste, a comb, and sunscreen. If I'm lucky, I get to wash my hair once or twice in a bucket of semi-cold water, but, mostly it's just pulled back in a clip and hidden under a hat.

And, crazy as it seems, I love it. We fight over who gets to do the dishes because the warm water on your hands feels so good--and that bit of heated water we save for washing our faces every night feels like a decadent luxury. And my husband always tells me I look great--and, you know what, I agree because I'm always smiling in every picture he takes of me. So I totally get what you mean about it being refreshing to not having to think about what to wear or what you look like. There are no mirrors in the back country.

Caro, that sounds like an amazing adventure! I am a sucker for experiences that mean getting remote and dirty enough that a hot shower is a ridiculously satisfying thing. I'll never forget how wonderful such simple things as a hot bath and a huge pizza were after my husband and I did a four-day backcountry hike through Zion national park.

Yes when I took two weeks to cross the Nullabor desert, before the road was sealed (really showing my age now). All my clothes had to be tied tight in garbage bags. Anything that wasn't was ruined by the red dust which penetrated everything. I wore shorts & tees & had one old pair of jeans & a jacket for the cold nights. I was never so grateful for a proper shower & good clothes.

I've been away from home -- and mostly away from fashion -- for the last month, spending time at my husband's new cattle ranch venture in Texas (a work in progress, should have cows before the end of the year). Suffice to say that jeans, tees, flannel shirts, hoodies, and rugged boots were my uniform for the last month. In fact, I ended up buying the most basic, unattractive men's rubber boots for slogging around in the mud, and I wore them a bunch. I could have packed about a quarter of what I actualy took -- I even took a dress, thinking we might go out for a nice dinner in Dallas, but we were so busy, that never happened!

I'm on my way home now -- stopped for the night, since I'm driving with the doggies -- and scanning the forum, I realize I'm missing my fab clothes. I'm looking forward to getting home and wearing something I don't have to worry about getting messed up with mud, or engine oil, or paint, or construction debris! Can't wait to put on some fab boots, a silk shirt, and a leather jacket!

Have you ever taken a total break from style? I did once before when I spent two months driving cross country and camped and wore gear almost every day. On one hand, it's kind of refreshing to not think about it and just throw on purely functional clothes, but on the other hand, I start missing all the nice things I have to wear.
