For inexpensive skinnies, try American Eagle. Seriously! I was in there with my two teenage kids, and tried on their skinnies just for fun. For $39 (I think) they are really cute! I just measured the rise on my size 4s, and it was 8.5".

I also love the J. Crew matchsticks, if anyone has any size 27s they want to get rid of!

I have Matchsticks and wouldn't purchase them again for that very reason, Maya. Plus, they stretch a.lot. For a few bucks more I could get premium denim.

Hi Shana - I bought my skinny jeans at Old Navy. I believe the are "The Diva". I'm not sure of the exact rise measurement, but on me they fit mid-rise. I'm wearing them in the pic I posted the other day. Good luck with your search!

Maya, you’re not the only one who judges jeans by their name I was at Nordstrom’s a few weeks ago, looking for dark mid or higher rise boot cut jeans. I tried on many different brands, most of them premium jeans, like David Kahn. The David Kahns and all the others that were labeled mid or high rise still felt too low so I asked the helpful sales lady for advice. She suggested a specific style of Jag jeans or NYDJ. I told her that I wouldn’t even try on the NYDJ because of the stupid name! I don’t care if they are the most flattering jeans on the planet. Fortunately, the Jag jeans turned out to be a great fit.

Does anyone really want to wear a brand called Not Your Daughter's Jeans? I can't imagine wearing those at any stage of life. I know it's stupid to judge a brand by its name but they may as well have slapped on a sign that says "I'm old and frumpy" on the inside label. What a morale booster.

Anyway, I have the Mias and they are not as high as I'd like, but they are sufficient and comfortable. I don't have them with me now but I would put them at about 9". The only thing about them is that I can't figure out the sizing. I bought a 2 the first time around even though they were a bit tight because they had an extremely high stretch content (around 15%). But they never grew or loosened up, so I went back and bought a 4, which grew a lot and are a bit too big. If only they had a size 3. I think that's just me though.

I'm surprised to see so many people show so much enthusiasm for the Matchsticks. The rise on mine is 7" in the front and 11" in the back. They are way too low for me. I never wear them anymore.

I'm curvy so I'm not much help, but you made me laugh with your line about being relegated to the NYDJ section! I can't even bring myself to try them on, even though they probably would fit me. I just can't "go there."

Hi Shana - I also tried the Mias and liked them. Just a guess, but I'd estimate that the rise is about 9" - only a guess. On me, the Mia rise it felt a little higher than the COH Elsons, but not much.

I'm sorry you got such lousy service at Nordstrom - that doesn't sound right at all!

Hilarious visual about you wearing NYDJ up to your chest though!

I also have the Express Mia Skinny jeans which are mid-rise. They've been very comfortable. I'm wearing them right now and measured the rise: 9" for a size 8 long.

I have the MIA ones but have never measured the rise. It's mid rise, though, and I think slightly higher than the J Crew Matchsticks one (I own both, but since I'm out of town and don't have the J Crews with me nor a measuring tape at hand I can't help more specifically, sorry). The MIA is definitely lower than the NYDJ!, and higher than most other skinny jeans out there.
I hope some other happy MIA wearer can measure the rise for you.

I want to get a pair of skinnies to wear with boots for the fall/winter and am having a hard time finding one that fits right. I checked out the options at Nordstroms last weekend - my Nordstroms is pretty small so the options were a bit limited. I started out in the premium denim area and grabbed a whole bunch of random Citizens, Sevens, Joe's, Hudsons etc and headed to the dressing room - the rises were all too short though some of them fit fabulously otherwise!! I tried asking the teenage salesperson about the COH Elson that I have seen Shiny & Laura wear but she gave me a blank stare & mentioned a couple of other styles which were both low rise and wouldn't work. She then suggested I go over to the NYDJ jeans! Though horrified that I was relegated to this section, I gave it a try and found that the rises were too high - even in the petite (the regular version literally came right up to my bust which was really comical!). I gave up at Nordstroms & tried the matchsticks at J Crew - a tiny bit too low in the rise unfortunately which made me really sad because I really wanted to get the cream cord ones which are now on sale.

I came home and tried to measure some of the other jeans that I have to determine what would be a comfortable rise - I'm thinking I need something in the 8.5-9.5" range. Any suggestions on specific brands/models? I know the Citizen Elson's seem to work for some here. Any other recommendations for a non-curvy hip/flat butt person who needs a higher rise? I'd be interested in hearing any lower priced versions too as I may hold off purchasing any premium denim until I am settled into my normal post-baby body/size. I still have some baby weight to shed and the awesome straight leg jeans I bought at Uniqlo over the summer are falling off me now so I think I'll probably only get this season's wear out of them. For those who have the Express MIA's - do you know that the rise is?

Thanks!!!
