I can never use a pointy toe for true comfort walking. I also favor lace ups for that because it’s so hard to get perfect snug fit in slip-ons, but that’s me.
I like the Caspians even though they are a little wide in the heel for me. Really like low- profile, more refined sneakers than the clunky type, but then I’ve kind of decided to go for what looks best on my feet & legs than for top trends.

How about wearing a nice pair of loafers? As we don't live in the same part of the world, I cannot give you specific recommendations, but most probably you will be able to find a suitable pair of loafers where you live. Many loafers are comfortable as well as look chic and polished. Loafers can be worn with or without socks. with plenty of outfits and for several kinds of occasions. Can be very useful when traveling. If you want a summery look, choose a light or bright pair.

OK, so this may not work if you don't have low volume feet, but...

I am super lazy and hate tying my shoes, but the truth is that lace up shoes fit my feet best. So what I do is skip the topmost set of eyelets on my sneakers and oxfords, which on my feet means I can get them on and off without untying the laces. So, pretty much just as fast as slip ons and they stay on my feet better. YMMV though.

I have very narrow feet. Keds Champion Leather Slip-on comes in narrow. Keds Crashback doesn’t, but seems to run a little narrower.
Probably not as stylish as most here would prefer, but I really like the look.

UPDATE, FWIW,

Tanya, the Everlane hybrid sneaks came. They are beautifully made and very comfy. They did not slip off my feet! My Fryes sneaks are still more comfy though, and since I have a brand new pair of those - I sent back the Everlane.

I DID stumble across blush LEATHER Converse that are extremely cushioning and comfy - much like our hi-tops that we love. AMAZING quality. And those are the ones I am thinking of keeping.

Thank you for this post, I have to buy some shoes for an upcoming trip and for me slip ons can be tricky. So good that Angie has put this into perspective - I will stick with lace ups and accept that I may have to spend a few minutes putting them on and off in the airport. Definitely preferable to having shoes that don't fit my feet properly.

Thank you all for the input. Sterling, your Allbirds are perfect for you.
Angie, I hear your reservations about the slip ons. I will wait for your report on the Everlanes. There is a month before I leave, so I have time. I intend to bring a pair of loafers with me, but not to wear them on the plane. Worst case scenario, I can always wear my old rose gold Cole Haan oxfords, which are super comfy, but started to show signs of wear.

Sterling, no second guessing. The Allbirds are GREAT for YOU.

Tanya, I second the concern for slip-ons. That said, I've just ordered these and will tell you know about them.

p.s. You haven't been back to Europe for a while, and this time you will see LOTS of sneakers on the street. Loafers are "my sneakers", but they are too cold on the plane. I do walk the Netherlands flat in them though.

I find slip-ons hard to fit with my narrow heels -- they don't stay on and are uncomfortable. But I love the look. I have had one pair that worked, but I fear for me at least it would involve so much trying to get that one pair.

It's so great you are going to see your family!

A bunch of silver options from Finds, but some are older. I have the Ecco lace ups. I wear an insole with them because sneakers are too flat for me otherwise. They do accommodate a Superfeet insole (i.e. they are roomy in my regular size).

JAileen has the Fitflops. Unfortunately, they don't fit me, or I'd have got them, because the sandals are great for my plantar fasciitis.

Sterling beat me to it, but I also have the Allbirds and they are EXCELLENT airport/traveling shoes. I think they look sharp, and are super comfortable. Easy on, easy off---and they are soft enough to accommodate swelling, if that happens on long flights.

If you have narrow feet, slip-ons are problematic, especially if you’ll be doing a lot of walking. I find a lightweight oxford ideal. Something like the Born Passi might fit the bill for your purpose:

I believe if you get Global Entry, you're automatically qualified for Pre-check. But it's been a few years since I did both, so don't take my word for gospel. Definitely worthwhile! I've bypassed some gnarly customs lines with GE!

Back to footwear, I'll also add that my other frequently worn shoes for travel -- depending on destination and weather -- are any comfortable booties that simply zip open and closed. They are quick to take on and off without sitting down to tie laces, buckle, etc.

Hi Tanya- I travel a lot and have fussy narrow feet. I would recommend you really think about your travel needs before going the slip-on route.

I find slip-ons problematic for more extended walking. I typically average 6-8 miles a day when I travel as I like to just wander around cities. They tend to slip more causing blisters or get too tight if my feet swell as the day goes on. That might not be an issue for you but I thought I would mention it.

I just brought the Ara Nicoles in black patent and really like them. They are cuter than the picture. They have great support and are very comfortable out of the box. They recently passed the 6 mile walking test. I also like Ecco and Cole Haans.

Thank you all for your input, lots of good info here. Like Angie, I also have narrow ankles - maybe that is why my Stan Smiths never got much wear, and also want refined, slim fashion sneakers. This would be for warmer weather - I have fleece lined high-top Converse for colder weather.
I will consider TSA pre-check and similar for the future. Reading your responses, I am convinced that I should go for a slip-on style. I may give Everlanes a try, but I am also leaning towards something in silver that is fairly cushioned. I spied this very interesting James Chan pair at Nordstrom. I don't know this brand and don't know how comfy it is, but I am quite smitten with the style. They cost more than I'd like to spend, though. I am going to have to think this through.

I am a big fan of slip-on sneakers or loafers for travel. Not just for airport security (and I can tell you that even with Precheck sometimes you have to remove your shoes anyway), but for general walking around when I'm at my destination. I wear the Paul Green loafers for travel a LOT. In fact, I've already had to have those shoes repaired once, I've worn them so much. I should probably consider another pair of good slip-on travel shoes.

I just wear Stance no-show socks with these shoes, so even if I have to remove them, I'm not walking through airport security in bare feet.

My preference is for comfy slip on sneaks or loafers. I do like to dress up for travel and comfort does not preclude looking nice.

Both the Johnston and Murphy perforated sneaker and the Nine West loafer are comfortable and cushioned (for standing and walking on hard surfaces.)

I like the idea of the pointy toe slip on sneaker.

OMG. I have been shopping them nonstop. May I suggest these two options to you. They both fit me perfectly. Good support. I only returned the Proper because I could not rationalize two so similar sneakers.

Like Lisa P, I also developed an obsession with the Cole Haans Mesh Oxford shoes. I tried them on repeatedly in different sizes and colors. I adored them, but always concluded they were too narrow for my feet. My friends that wear them rave about them.

I travel a lot and have this down for my own needs. In cold weather I wear fleece lined Converse hi-tops. In warm weather I wear my Fryes. See Finds.

All the Stan Smiths and the like are too wide for my feet, and to my eye look funny on my narrow ankles. Proportions are wrong. I need slim fashion sneakers that create a streamlined effect. (I don't like the look of Athletic sneakers).

I also have Global Entry - which helps. But before that, I wore the same lace-up sneaks. It's a minute extra of your life. I feel that perspective about the time-factor is important.

You really need to do the TSA precheck. If you are flying a lot, it is worth it. You don’t have to take off your shoes or take your laptop out of your bag. The line is usually shorter, and it’s faster because people aren’t taking off their shoes, etc. Then you can wear any shoe you like.

I have the Everlanes in mid grey unperforated leather, and love them. They are very narrow and refined looking. In terms of travel in slip-ons, I just keep a pair of workout socks in my bag and quickly put them on when I'm waiting in line at security, then take them off again after and off I go ( I refuse to be in bare feet in an airport)

R: the Cole Haans - I was obsessed with getting a pair of those for awhile, but now find they aren't quite me - the colour of the sole says old-school gym shoe or something . I keep seeing them on sales racks - still, after a few years .
I love that silver metallic CH kkards shows above , too.
