Medusa, I also own Cejon velvet gloves and really like them. I have found a huge selection at Filene's Basement (I know there is a huge one in Boston), at great prices.

Now I'm very curious about the white Boden trench, do post pics asap, and good luck with the wellies and gloves hunt!

You're more than welcome, Medusa!! That Boden coat is adorable! White is definitely a dangerous color, but SO cute! I also really like it in the Black with pink accents, they'd be perfect with those Black embossed Pelicans!!

Medusa, I can't be bothered reading the comments so forgive me for possibly being redundant:

I was at Nordstrom Rack today looking at cold weather accessories and found a number of velvet gloves with Thinsulate. They are also available at Macys but are cheaper at the Rack. The brand at Macy's is Cejon but I'm not sure if it's the same at the Rack. Same idea, nevertheless. There were a lot of cute styles with ruching and plaid.

I'm unable to decide between those and those new iphone-friendly gloves. I remember finding it highly annoying and inconvenient to constantly need to remove my gloves to send a text message while waiting for the train. I have no idea if you have a touchscreen phone, but it's something to consider.

I don't know about you, Medusa, but the idea of spending over $100 on rain boots sickens me. I haven't bought any wellies because unlike the general population, I do not find them cute or appealing in any way. To me they look exactly like what they are: Goofy rubber boots you wear because you have to. So I'd be inclined to just get whatever is cheapest and doesn't destroy my feet...

I love those moc croc patterned ones!

Many, and I mean MANY women where I live in New England have the Hunter rain boots. I think they look quite sleek and attractive for a rain boot, and they are supposed to be good quality.

I would try a few styles and brands out to see what you like. Some can be so stiff.

L.L. Bean makes neat boot liners. I haven't seen them in person but they look so cozy and would help carry rain boots into more wintry weather:

http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop.....38;feat=sr

As for gloves, leather gloves lined with something like cashmere are great for fall/early winter. You can find nice ones that are not too expensive at places like TJ Maxx. I got a pair on sale from Lands End last year, similar to these:

http://www.landsend.com/pp/Lea.....038;sku_0=::SPB&CM_MERCH=search-_-leather+gloves&origin=search

Lands End has pretty frequent promotions so you could get them for less.

I have Raynaud's, so am also growing a collection of ski gloves and puffy down mittens in search of the perfect pair that keep my fingers warm enough. Depending on how much time you spend outside and how cold you get, you might need something warmer down the road, or even just a silk liner to layer under your regular gloves, like these:

http://www.landsend.com/pp/Sil.....038;sku_0=::BLA&CM_MERCH=search-_-glove+liner&origin=search

I like that Boden rain coat, but I could never keep it clean myself. What about something like this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....veforlater

Here's a similar style by London Fog at Macy's: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/.....ryID=52471

And a Calvin Klein one: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/.....ryID=52471

Not quite as kicky and cute as the Boden one, though.

My raincoat is very, very light beige. It gets filthy around the sleeves and at the bottom. But it washes like a dream. So you make want to make sure this one does too.

If you're going to be out in the rain and mud, it will get dirty no matter what you wear.

Thanks again everyone! This Boden raincoat in white is calling my name (thanks Isabel):
http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/.....acket.html
It's just gorgeous. I want it. But am I crazy to get it in white, given that one of the things I do in the rain is go to dog parks where muddy dogs jump on me with their muddy paws? Also, does anyone else on the forum have this coat? Any comments about it?

Next, up, these boots:
http://www.sperrytopsider.com/.....cat90048DM

there's a good 'everyday value' trench-for-the-trench-hater by DKNY at Macy's. Single-breasted, flared below the waist, but still classic. I have it and am pleased with the quality. I'm too tired to take pictures tonight but I will try this weekend.

Glad to hear you're doing well Medusa! I'm wary of trenchcoats as well since I don't have much of a waist to define. The ones that work for me have a higher waist (to match my natural waist) and a more flared style, not relying on the belt for definition.

The Hunter wellies look lovely to me, but I've never tried them on so can't comment on how they fit/feel. Target always has cheaper imitations too, I've noticed.

Hi Medusa !

I used to hate trenches until I discovered that what I didn't like on me was the double breasted kind.

I would suggest you try travelsmith.com, you can also get warm liners for them. They are utterly waterproof and indestructible and machine washable. My mom, sister and I all have raincoats from Travelsmith ( they are also really good windproof materials ).

I like this one a lot too :

I would probably buy one of these if I didn't already own one:

Hi Medusa, are you back in Boston for good? I don't like how traditional double-breasted trench coats look on me but I have seen a few single breasted styles that I think are more flattering. I think you could definitely pull off a trench coat of some kind or another. Have you seen some of the Soia & Kyo ones that Angie, Tanya and some others have? They're definitely a little funkier and more interesting than a traditional style. Maybe something like:

http://www.bluefly.com/Soia-&#.....erralID=NA

http://www.bluefly.com/Soia-&#.....erralID=NA

My preferred coat for rain is my waxed cotton Barbour jacket:

http://www.barbour.com/index.c.....egoryID=23

The styles are definitely more "sporty" but it works with my lifestyle.

I think a good alternative to wellies are some of the Aquatalia boots. I ordered the wasabi (older model) boots a couple of years ago. They have a 13" circumference, had a beautiful lining and were super comfortable & warm! Unfortunately, they were too tall for me but they might work on you since you are taller.

I remember the glove discussion but not the particulars - maybe someone who remembers will chime in.

I dont think anyone looks 'bad' in a trenchcoat! They are such a classic piece....if you are looking for warm gloves, I would strongly suggest some with a lining of down(? )Sorry- cant think of what type is so warm.... agghh!

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been around in a while, things have been busy. I hope you're all having a good fall.

Spending time in Boston has made me realize that I need some better clothes to deal with the weather: a nice raincoat, some rain boots (wellies?) and some warm gloves.
If you have any suggestions about these items, I'd love to hear them.

The obvious choice for a nice raincoat would be a trench coat, but I have a prejudice that I would look bad in a trenchcoat. Right or wrong?

Any favorite sources for wellies?

I remember last year there was a discussion about warm velvet gloves - does anyone know where they are available?
