Have you checked out Athleta? I tried this one on the last time I was in and found it flattering for my pear shaped self. It is made from the same sort of silky fabric that some of their pants are made from and could be dressed up or down. The neckline reminded me of a halter style because it ties in the back and can be adjusted. The longer length is also a bonus.

Good luck in your search. Dresses are tough.

ETA: just read your post again to realize this probably isn't the kind of dress you are looking for. Sorry about that! Good luck in your search and keep us posted.

Here are the two fit/flare dresses I own now. I like them and the nude/tan heeled sandals I'm searching for will elevate them a bit. However to wear them indoors in AC requires a topper and that becomes problematic and is part of the reason I want something different.

1 dress in royal blue
2 dress in black
3 black dress with white topper, this has the high contrast horizontal line problem and my waist disappears
4 with denim jacket, low contrast and a bit better
5 with animal print cardigan, ok but just ok
6 with grey flowy sweater, too voluminous to be flattering

kkards good question about the length; these would mostly be longer on me because I'm 5' 1".

Suz very helpful feedback, thanks so much for taking the time to send it. I do get what you are saying, and I will definitely consider a skirt and expect it to take a while to find what I want. I've stayed away from skirts because adding a top seems to always create a horizontal line, but I think I'm better equipped to figure this out after a few months of YLF-curriculum :-)

Rachylou yes that's the idea.

Jaileen, which Anthro dress do you like? There are two of them shown and they are both Lyocell..

Angie thanks will definitely look into the skirt idea. I do have a couple of knit sleeveless fit and flare dresses that I wear occasionally but I was looking for something different...I can't seem to grab a find but they are from Lands End in black and royal blue....much like this one but with a wider waistband and a deeper V-neck....
http://www.landsend.com/produc.....664?sku_0=::GC2

..maybe a slightly different version would be the thing to look for. I do agree it's a good silhouette on me.

Carter, great suggestions, will check them out.

What about something that floats over and away from the body, rather than a straight shape that want to fight your shape? Some finds below.

I like the Anthro dress. It has a nice drape. It's lyocell so I don't know how it breathes. The model is 5 10 so it might be too long. But I'd rather have to shorten a dress than wear one that can't be lengthened.

I'm thinking something like the Kut one. Slightly A-line, a soft fabric with drape.

This style of dress is fabulous for a certain body type and certain kinds of occasions/ lifestyles. I have one and love it. But I am more rectangular shaped. These are easier to fit on rectangles, slim hourglasses, and inverted triangle shapes than on pretty pears.

That is not to say that none will work! But it might mean trying on a whole lot of them first to find "the one." Sort of like fitting jeans.

I understand the urge to wear something other than fit and flare, though. You get tired of the same silhouette over and over.

Angie might be able to speak to how each of these dresses fits. My guess is that the Kut one might be a good bet, but that is based on zero information, LOL!

Consider, also, a casual skirt. You don't want something that will just get orphaned, but I've been wearing the Vince Camuto tube skirts for about 4 summers now and they've been summer workhorses! (In Finds). You might think they'd be impossible to wear, but you would be surprised. Forum members with a range of body types found these exceptionally forgiving and easy to style.

An update would be a wrap skirt like Angie featured here. I don't have one, but would consider one if I could find...http://youlookfab.com/2016/04/.....sey-skirt/

(I own the anthro chambray dress in a tunic shirt, and its been a real workhorse for me, the fabric is really soft and comfy).

i'll be honest, i love the idea of these kind of shapeless dresses, but i tried a few on this year, and i just couldn't make them work. in part its because if I wear dresses (or skirts) i want them to be longer. are you comfortable with this length, especially as it looks like most of these have a slight slit on the hem?

I've been on the hunt for a new dress and could use some advice on what type of dress to choose. My lifestyle is pretty casual so I'd wear this dress out to dinner at casual restaurants, or to a concert, or maybe to a social event at someone's house. I have tended to wear dresses only for "occasions" but would like to get one that I'd wear more often. I'd also like to wear it for a couple of different seasons with tights/toppers etc.

I ordered the sleeveless dress in find #1, but to get a size that didn't pull tight when I sat down meant the armholes were too big and I didn't love it enough to alter it. (it was knee length on me).

I'm thinking I should look for a simple, basic dress in a solid color, in one of my neutrals (blue, black, grey, white), and not sleeveless since as Angie has said it's tough to find toppers to work with sleeveless dresses. Also anything with a gathered waist tends to add bulk to my waistline which doesn't look so good, so more of a straight silhouette would work. I do wear fit and flare styles but am looking for something different this time. I'm a pear shape but am lately thinking I have a strong secondary in one of the other shapes.

The denim shirt dresses Angie recommended recently (finds #2 - 8) seem like a really good idea (except find #2 with the belted waistline)

What other suggestions would you make?

Thanks!!
