I bought the Sloan ankle fit in Petite and the Express Editor pants (full length, slimmer fit). At Express, I also tried the Columnist (supposed to be slimmer than the Editors). They were both virtually identical, even though on the website they look very different. Not sure why. The area around the crotch looked better on the Editors because the bottom of the zip fly hits lower. I'm not sure which will work best but thought I needed to bring them home to take a closer look. The lighting was pretty dim in the store!

Gigi, thanks for the suggestion. I have never been in White House Black Market, but there is one at the mall near me. I will swing by there next time!

Perhaps you could try White House Black Market. I don't have any pants from them, but every time I browse their site, I see row after row of black pants in various styles. Perhaps one of them would work? They have some pants in petite at WHBM as well, if you discover that works for you.

If you find that pants are consistently too long, I would recommend always looking for petites' sizes or a short inseam, regardless of your height. You may have short legs in proportion to your torso; everyone is built differently.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I love JCrew but for some reason the Minnies did not work for me DonnaF, that is my experience too with Gap pants - that they are lint collectors and I have pets!

Angie - thank you for mentioning the Sloans at BR - I'd forgotten about them! I remember trying them on earlier in the season and loved the fit, but they were 2" too long. They have a cute vent at the ankle, so I didn't think they could be successfully altered. When I asked the salesperson about trying a Petite size, she totally discouraged me. But, I just checked the measurements on the Petite and I think they will work - AND they have them in stock in black and navy at my local BR. I will swing by there tomorrow. If they work, I can order more colors online. Hopeful! For those of you that have the Sloans, do they shrink much?

I have the Gap True Straights. They pretty much stay tucked up if I need them shorter for a particular pair of shoes. As the reviews say, they are lint collectors even if you don't have pets. They aren't the be all and end all of dressier pants, but they are machine washable so they work for me. Also, since they are a bit thick, I don't like to wear them in hot weather.

I've bought a bunch of pants at Ann Taylor. I like the Modern fit but there are other choices depending on body type. The fits usually come in trouser (less fitted) or slim leg. Good luck!

Thanks, Aida and Laura! Since I'm looking for a full-length slimmer pant that I can wear with flats, I'm going to try Express. I hadn't thought of them and there is one near me. Great idea!

Fitted like slim cut, cigarette pants, that sort of thing? Or just not wide legged? It seems like the two silhouettes most popular right now are skinny, and often cropped now that we're heading into the warm months, or wide leg trousers. On the skinny side I'd say BR, the J Crew Minnie, and perhaps The Limited or Express.

Can someone recommend nice black pants that are dressy enough for work that are not wide or flaring?

I'd love to find something that is as fitted as possible, that can be hemmed for flats. I have not had luck in the past. I have defaulted to pants from Banana Republic, but since they flare a bit at the bottom, I had them hemmed for heels since they looked and draped better that way.

Any suggestions for stores or brands to try would be appreciated! Thanks!
